Chapter 326: Chapter 219: Feng Hua’s Invitation, First Battle on the Frontline (2)
Anything that slipped through was left for the Warriors on the wall to handle.
Yu Fei saw that at the very forefront of the battlefield were at least a hundred Gang Qi Martial Artists and over a thousand Five Realms Divine Intent Martial Artists. They bore the brunt of the demonic tide, forming the first line of defense. Their task was to seek and destroy the Spider Demons or hidden Shadow Demons, including some high-level Blade Demons.
The second line was a bulwark of tens of thousands of Inner Qi Martial Artists, who slaughtered the vast majority of the Blade Demons and other mid-level demons.
Any that slipped past were sniped by Martial Artists resting on the wall, who used super-powered firearms to prevent them from reaching the rear and wreaking havoc among the low-level Martial Artists.
The third and final line of defense was at the foot of the wall itself, composed of innumerable second and third-realm Martial Artists. They killed endless streams of lesser demons right below the ramparts.
Yu Fei saw a constant flow of warriors falling back from the demonic tide, while others charged forward to take their place on the line. It was clearly a rotation strategy; few could sustain such high-intensity combat for long.
Yu Fei watched as innumerable demons were slain, their bodies falling to the earth. They disintegrated quickly, trampled into a green slurry by the ongoing battle.
The battlefield was a massive meat grinder, a whirlwind of multicolored Qi Jin and surging Qi Blood. Due to the demons’ unique physiology, their bodies dissolved quickly upon death, leaving surprisingly little behind.
Yet after a century of war, the peculiar stench of this land, built upon mountains of corpses, had been etched into the very soil, never to fade.
Yu Fei also spotted special Martial Artists in red uniforms on the field. They rarely fought, focusing instead on recovering the bodies of injured or fallen comrades and bringing them to the rear.
But the fighting was too intense. Many Martial Artists, once injured, were instantly torn to shreds by the demons. On this brutal battlefield, there was no time for grief—only for killing.
At some point, Feng Hua had lit a long, thin cigarette. She casually tossed one to Yu Fei.
A wild grin spread across her face. "Welcome to the front line!"
Yu Fei said nothing, simply handing the cigarette—branded "Feng Hua"—back to her. "Thanks, but I don’t smoke."
Coincidentally, the brand of cigarette she smoked shared her name: Feng Hua.
"Heh..." Feng Hua didn’t take it back. With a surge of Inner Qi, she inhaled, consuming the entire cigarette in a single, impossible drag. She then flicked the butt off the wall.
"Spirit Fox, activate the psychic network! Patch in all combat personnel and connect to central command!"
"Spirit Fox, copy!"
Suddenly, the crisp voice of Spirit Fox echoed in Yu Fei’s mind. He had heard of the psychic network many times, but this was the first time he had ever been connected.
The sensation was just like putting on a headset.
Feng Hua’s voice filled his mind. "Yu Fei, Kang Ming and your commander can handle things in the rear. You eliminated me during the war games, and I’m not about to settle the score with a drinking contest. That would be childish!"
"Today is a perfect day. The enemy is as vast as the sea. You and I will settle this with our deeds in battle!"
Without waiting for a response, she tossed her super-powered firearm to Kang Ming, turned, and leaped from the hundred-meter-high wall. Upon landing, she immediately charged into the fray.
The blade in her hand flashed like frost, carving open a green-tinged rift in the enemy ranks that hung in the air for three seconds. She charged through it, heading for the second and even the first line of defense.
’Interesting...’ Yu Fei tucked the cigarette inside his Profound Armor and reached back to undo the clasps on his backplate.
"Mr. Yu, don’t be rash..."
Before Qin Hao could finish his worried plea, Yu Fei tossed him the "Soul Devourer" and its ammo belt. Qin Hao scrambled to catch them.
Then, Yu Fei drew his blade, Zhanming. He stomped hard on the rampart, and a flicker of fire sparked in the air where his foot landed, leaving a brilliant line of flame. In a single leap, Yu Fei vaulted an astonishing five kilometers, appearing in mid-air over the center of the battlefield.
Azure Qi Jin erupted around him as he raised Zhanming high, forming a blade of light over fifteen meters long. He brought it crashing down with the weight of a mountain. Directly below, at the heart of the strike, was a Four Realms Spider Demon—the exact type of creature Qian Meng had warned them never to face alone.
After the war games, Yu Fei had used nearly twenty million contribution points to drastically improve his abilities. And that wasn’t even counting the golden cultivation talent and Feng Hua’s red talent, "Startling Grace," that he had acquired.
Over the past month, Yu Fei had mastered the Sword Intent of Weight. His blade, Zhanming, was no longer bound by the constraints of a heavy weapon. He could alter its weight at will, multiplying its destructive power.
He had perfected both the Shrinking Earth Stepping Technique and the Celestial Star Travel Body, two Body Techniques he could now finally utilize in combat.
His five-kilometer leap was an application of the Speed Burst Secret Skill, Burning Void Escape, which he had brought to a level of initial mastery.
The effective range of this Cultivation Technique was originally only about two kilometers. However, after truly beginning his training, Yu Fei discovered that the spatial properties of his Illusory Sword Intent unexpectedly amplified this Secret Technique.
It was a pleasant surprise, and the reason for the breathtaking scene that had just unfolded.
Below, a golden-hued Spider Demon was fighting four human Martial Artists. Of its six arms, two wielded an eight-meter-long great-axe with a handle ten centimeters thick. Another arm held a blade, one held a shield, and its two lowest, shorter arms gripped a three-meter-long super-powered weapon.
A Four Realms Spider Demon possessed six arms, making its close-combat abilities off the charts. Capable of attacking at long, medium, and short ranges, it was practically an all-rounder.
This particular Spider Demon fought as if unopposed, its axe and blade sending the four human Martial Artists into one perilous situation after another.
A single swing of its long-handled great-axe had the force to shatter mountains; no one dared meet its strikes head-on.
This was due to the enormous difference in size between the opponents.
Furthermore, as the Spider Demon rampaged, its eight sharp legs acted as additional weapons, constantly trying to skewer or trample the warriors.
Whenever they managed to get close, they were blocked by its shield. The slightest mistake resulted in a flurry of slashes and blows that left them battered and in a sorry state.
The energy conduits on the super-powered weapon in the Spider Demon’s hands began to glow brighter, and the warriors’ hearts sank.
At this close range, a blast from that weapon would be wide-area damage. They would have no way to dodge it; they could be killed instantly.
"Dammit, call for backup!"
’How did the big shots on the front line let this thing through?’ one of them thought desperately. Spider Demons were incredibly powerful and were usually accompanied by hordes of Blade Demons and lesser demons. Their comrades were doing their best to hold back the swarm at the periphery, which was the only reason they had this chance to stall the main threat.
But they were reaching their limit. A Four Realms Spider Demon normally required a team of at least ten Inner Qi Martial Artists to take down. This one was also a gold-elemental variant, boasting extremely high defense and attack power.
BANG!
The burly man with the shield was unexpectedly grazed by the axe blade and sent flying like a rag doll. His expensive shield was bent into a crude L-shape, both of his arms were shattered, and his face was ashen. He was too grievously wounded to even get back up.
On the battlefield, this was a fatal predicament. Even a single lesser demon could now finish him off.
The remaining warriors were pinned down by the Spider Demon. Even if they wanted to help their comrade, they were powerless to do so. At this point, they could barely save themselves.
"Dammit! I’ll kill you, you bastard!"
An agile female warrior gripped her long spear with both hands. Qi Jin surged around her as her speed suddenly increased—she had clearly activated a Speed Burst Secret Skill.
The woman closed in on the Spider Demon, her spear striking like a torrent of rain. Sparks flew as the creature blocked the vast majority of her attacks with its shield, and the few that landed were harmless.
A cruel light flashed in the Spider Demon’s eyes. Seizing the moment her Qi Jin faltered, it swatted her away with its shield. Dazed by the heavy blow, she staggered to her feet and hesitated for a fatal second.
The Spider Demon raised its eight-meter-long great-axe high, preparing to cleave her in two.
"Look out! Move!"
Her teammates watched in desperation, but there was nothing they could do. The Spider Demon’s assault was relentless; its eight spear-like legs and long blade kept the other two warriors pinned down. The squad’s complete annihilation seemed only a second away.
Suddenly, an enormous azure blade of light materialized above the Spider Demon’s head, descending with unstoppable force.
The Spider Demon reacted even faster than the four warriors, sensing the mortal danger.
Ignoring the others, it swung its great-axe upward to block.
At the same time, its body began to radiate a golden light—a defensive Secret Technique unique to mid-level, gold-elemental Spider Demons.
BOOM!
The azure blade of light descended from the heavens!
