Chapter 325: Chapter 219: Feng Hua’s Invitation, First Frontline Battle
Feng Hua walked them through the procedure for participating in frontline missions. In a month, Yu Fei and the others would have to prepare all of this on their own.
The Yulin Army members were students, so they couldn’t operate on the same model as the garrison. Instead, they emulated independent battle groups, which required them to apply in advance and submit their team’s size, as well as the martial realm information of all personnel.
The Celestial Pride Class of Shenhan University was considered a single team by default. The moment the class was named, it was effectively registered in the system as a special battle group. This gave them the flexibility of an independent group but kept them under the university’s direct command.
In fact, at this stage, the Celestial Pride Classes from all seven major universities would be heading to various main battlefields for their trials. A lot of people were watching, eager to see the potential of each class.
The performance of everyone—from Yu Fei to Feng Hua and their teams—was secretly being recorded in every battle. Not a single person was exempt.
On paper, they were all out gaining experience on their own. In reality, they were being watched from all sides.
The Celestial Pride Classes from the seven universities comprised the most talented youths of their year. Their performance would practically define the upper limits for their entire generation of Martial Artists, which was why they were watched so closely.
"The Salted Fish Assault Team, correct? Are you confirming that you need additional personnel for your defense of wall sector 124, and that you’ll be coordinating with the Yulin Army?"
At the Forward Command Office, Feng Hua had brought Yu Fei to submit a change to the joint defense information.
Wall sector 124 was the defensive area Feng Hua had reserved earlier, a task well within her team’s capabilities. As a rule, the Forward Command Office would approve any request to add personnel, provided the individuals were cleared. It was just a matter of updating the registration.
"Confirmed!"
"Alright then, Yu Fei. Do you consent to merge the Yulin Army with their unit for this joint defense operation, under the leadership of the Salted Fish Assault Team? If you do, the authority to calculate and distribute combat merits will fall to them."
"Confirmed!"
THUMP! THUMP!
Two large seals were stamped onto the triplicate forms, and the process was complete.
On the way back, Yu Fei was confused. The whole thing felt a bit like child’s play.
"That’s it?"
Feng Hua chuckled. "Of course. What else did you want? Don’t worry, the paperwork is just a formality. That person just now already transmitted the information to the Celestial Secret Tower."
Feng Hua turned back to look at Yu Fei, her expression serious. "Besides, do you really think they just let us run wild? I refuse to believe you haven’t noticed. With your perception, you must have already discovered the forces protecting us from the shadows!"
Yu Fei simply smiled without a word.
The official changing of the guard was at twelve noon, but Feng Hua had everyone there by 9:00 AM. They needed to get familiar with the environment beforehand. This defensive rotation would last seven days, designed to acclimate the Yulin Army to the battlefield and inure them to the act of killing.
Jiang Nianwei split the personnel into two groups, which would rotate every twelve hours. Each group would take its position three hours before their shift started. This was the standard operating procedure for most battle groups; the demon race attacked relentlessly, day and night, so they had to ensure their fighters were always combat-ready.
The closer they got to Dragon Path Crossing, the more deafening the cacophony of battle cries and gunfire became, a continuous, thunderous roar.
They climbed steadily up the stairs. The lapis-hued stone bricks were covered in gouges and scratches, their original sharp edges worn away long ago. All that remained were signs of constant repair, the cracks between stones filled with dark green and brownish-black stains that emitted a faint, putrid odor.
Feng Hua explained as they walked. Over the past century, the defense hadn’t always gone smoothly. Every so often, the demon race would go on a rampage, their offensive power increasing dramatically. During those times, no human Martial Artist could be spared, and all independent battle groups were conscripted into the fight by mandatory order.
Yu Fei recalled the summer after his sophomore year of high school. That bunch from the Illuminati had taken advantage of a demon rampage, when the front lines were short on manpower, to stir up trouble behind the lines.
The moment they set foot on the city wall, a thick, putrid stench assaulted them. Even with his resilience, Yu Fei found himself momentarily stunned before he could suppress the urge to gag.
The twenty-odd members of the Yulin Army present today fared even worse. Over half of them were hunched over the parapets, vomiting uncontrollably.
Jiang Nianwei’s face was pale, and she struggled to keep her eyes open. The stench was just that overwhelming.
Wall sector 124 spanned five hundred meters. The top of the wall was covered in colored lines, delineating the defensive zones for each battle group.
"Well now, first time on the battlefield? We don’t see many new faces around here!"
"You’re all so green! This is nothing. You should try getting a whiff of a Terror Demon—now *that’s* deadly. Plenty of guys have suffocated from the smell long before a demon even got to them! Ha ha..."
The team on duty hadn’t withdrawn yet. Judging by their gear, they were the regulars tasked with defending Dragon Path Crossing.
This stretch of the wall was heavily manned, with over a hundred Martial Artists standing guard, rifles at the ready. Their cultivation ranged from the second to the fifth realm, with third-realm Martial Artists being the most numerous. Only a handful had reached the fifth realm.
Yu Fei’s gaze drifted past them and down toward the base of the wall. What he saw was a sight that would be seared into his memory for the rest of his life.
A dark green ocean stretched from the hazy, giant stone pillars in the distance all the way to the base of the wall. It was a sea formed of countless Inferior Demons and Blade Demons, with Spider Demons interspersed throughout, and it extended as far as the eye could see.
Green was not only the color of the demons’ bodies but also the color of the talent gems on their heads. Of these low-to-mid-rank demons, ninety-nine percent possessed only green-level talent; one could barely spot a blue gem among them.
They advanced from the distance, their pace quickening from a slow shamble to a full-on charge, surging toward the city wall like a tidal wave.
Swarming the sky above were Wing Demons, so numerous they blotted out the sun, all rushing toward Dragon Path Crossing. On the wall, countless soldiers aimed high-energy weapons, sniping the threats from above.
Further out, within a ten-kilometer radius of the wall, even more human Martial Artists were engaged in a desperate battle. They acted like combs and saws, tearing through the charging demons and shredding them to pieces.
