Chapter 212: Chapter 212: Despicable and Vile Means

Stop haunting me.

You’re disrupting my life.

"Eve, are you still... angry with me about the miscarriage?" Julian asked after a moment’s thought. After all, she had never used this tone with him before, let alone been the one to initiate contact.

But if Julian hadn’t brought it up, it might have been fine. The moment he did, Evelyn’s hatred boiled over!

"How dare you bring up the miscarriage?!"

"I really had no other choice! Try to see it from my perspective. How could I possibly stand by and let you have Ryan’s child? I just couldn’t! Do you think I did it because I’m narrow-minded and couldn’t tolerate your child?" Julian sighed. "It’s really not like that! If this had been your child with anyone else, I could have accepted it! Because I love you, I would have loved your child, too! But the father... it just couldn’t be Ryan."

He sounded deeply impassioned over the phone.

But to Evelyn, it all sounded ridiculous.

"Do you even believe what you’re saying? Julian, you used such despicable, underhanded tactics, tricking my mother into giving me that medicine... Is that something a normal person would even think of? You’re just a terrible person. My loving you back then? That was me being blind. It’s the shame of my entire life!"

Evelyn hadn’t said these things before, but not because she didn’t know how.

After all, as a lawyer, wasn’t being sharp-tongued part of the job description?

She didn’t say it simply because she didn’t want to confront the past.

’It’s true that Julian was at fault, but was I completely blameless?’

’I had my share of the blame.’

’He never loved me at all. His heart belonged to Jane Jacobs. Hadn’t I known that all along?’

Evelyn wasn’t a fool. She knew.

But...

She had thought that if she was just sincere enough, she could make Julian fall in love with her.

And so, after years of persistence, for it to all end like this... Evelyn was unwilling to place all the blame on others.

’Julian was at fault.’

’But wasn’t I the one who refused to let them be together, who insisted on this marriage?’

’What was the point of standing on the moral high ground and constantly pointing out his faults?’

’As long as I was clear about it in my own heart, that was enough.’

’Besides, I could never win a fight against the Sterling Family.’

For an ordinary person, as long as she could do her job well and cover her family’s expenses, things like love... they didn’t seem so important anymore.

"Yes, I’m despicable, I’m vile! Eve, when I did those things, I knew you would say all this! I’ll admit to everything. Say whatever you want, I’ll take it! I’m just begging you for one more chance. After all... it’s impossible for you and Ryan now."

Julian didn’t understand. Since Evelyn wasn’t with Ryan anymore, why wouldn’t she give him a chance?

’Isn’t remarrying me the best choice?’

’She could move back into the home she knows, her mother could be treated by the best doctors, and her brother would receive generous financial support. Even after he graduates college, I would help him!’

’Evelyn isn’t going to be single forever, anyway. She’s going to need someone by her side sooner or later.’

’So what difference does it make who she ends up with?’

’With me, at least she knows what she’s getting.’

’And my mother completely adores her, so there would be absolutely no mother-in-law problems.’

"What’s between me and Ryan is none of your business."

"How could it have nothing to do with me? Eve, he’s my own brother! You’re so understanding; how could you not have considered how I would feel? How was I supposed to face seeing the two of you together!"
