Chapter 180: Chapter 180: Me, Open a Law Firm?

Alex Grant got up and walked to the door of the hospital room.

Suddenly, he paused and turned back to look at Evelyn Grant. "Sis, why don’t you eat something else for now? There’s a supermarket downstairs. I can buy you something first. Then, once you’re discharged, I’ll go get you those pastries!" ℯ

"...What’s wrong?"

"If I go, you’ll be all alone in the room. I’m worried something might happen."

The round trip would take at least half an hour.

Alex was worried his sister would faint again, and what if the doctor didn’t notice in time?

"It’s fine... There are nurses in the hospital. They’ll come in to check on me often! And look... I’m doing pretty well right now. If I eat something... I’ll feel even better."

"Alright then! I’ll go tell the doctor to keep a closer eye on you! He won’t have to once I’m back!" Alex Grant was still just a kid, not very perceptive. All he wanted was for his sister to get better, so he didn’t think about anything else.

When he saw his sister nod, he dashed out of the room.

’I have to get back as fast as I can. I can’t leave her here alone.’

After confirming her brother had left, Evelyn Grant struggled to reach for her phone, then scrolled through her contacts to find Ryan Sterling’s number.

She hesitated for a moment before dialing.

The call started ringing on the other end.

Just as Evelyn Grant brought the phone to her ear, suddenly—

she also heard what sounded like a phone ringing from right outside her hospital room!

Her first thought was that it had to be Ryan Sterling. ’He’s here at the hospital, too.’

But on second thought...

’We’re about to get a divorce. Why would he still be waiting at the hospital for me?’

’Hasn’t he had enough of this act?’

’It was just a game, and Ryan Sterling is a very busy man.’

’Why am I being so sentimental, thinking he actually loved me?’

The phone rang for a long time, but no one on the other end picked up.

Evelyn Grant quietly hung up; she didn’t call him again and again.

But about a minute later, Ryan Sterling called her back.

"Did you need something?"

Although he was trying his best to sound nonchalant, she could hear the hoarseness in his voice.

"Yes, weren’t we supposed to... go to the Civil Affairs Bureau today? I... something came up, so I can’t make it." After she spoke, Evelyn Grant thought of Mr. Shaw and the law firm, so she let out a soft laugh and continued, "But you should already know that. I fainted and was brought to the hospital by Mr. Shaw."

’The law firm belongs to Ryan Sterling. How could he possibly not know?’

’I didn’t need to say "something came up." It sounds ridiculous.’

"Why should I know?" Ryan Sterling retorted.

Even though Evelyn Grant was already suspicious about the law firm, Ryan Sterling had to keep up the act to keep her from leaving him.

As long as he denied it to his last breath, no one could prove he had any connection to the firm.

"...The law firm... isn’t it yours?"

"I’ve been abroad for years, you know that. What law firm would I be opening?"

"But whenever something happens to me, the firm suddenly goes on break. Wasn’t that your doing?"

Ryan’s tone on the other end was one of exasperation. "What could I possibly be doing? If I had that kind of control, I would’ve made you quit working altogether and just stay home with me!"

He had no choice. At this point, all he could do was try to change the subject.

Otherwise, it would be very difficult to clear himself of the suspicion.

"...It’s really not your firm?"

"I don’t even know what you’re talking about."
