I Became the Villain Alpha's Omega (BL)
Chapter 454: The Unexpected Tea Guest
"What a lovely day..."
Marielle sat back in her chair, taking a sip from a delicate porcelain cup. The floral aroma of bergamot and dried elderberry washed over her tongue, smooth and hot, easing the tight knot that had been sitting between her shoulders for the last twenty-four hours. Or more.
Marielle closed her eyes and let the gentle breeze brush against her. Marielle closing her eyes and letting the gentle breeze stir the hem of her dark velvet gown. No loud shouts, no border reports, and finally, a single hour of peace.
SLAP
A large, heavy hand came down firmly onto her left shoulder.
"Gah...!"
Marielle flinched violently, her hand jerking sideways as a sharp splash of scalding elderberry tea shot straight over the rim of her porcelain cup, drenching her white lace cuffs and splashing right across her lap.
"Curse you!" Marielle gasped out, coughing hard as tea went straight down the wrong pipe. She slammed the cup onto the saucer with a loud clatter, frantically grabbing a cloth napkin from the tray to dab at her wet skirt.
"My, my," a cheerful, familiar voice drawled from right beside her shoulder. "Since when did the formidable Lady Marielle Valtrane become so easily startled?"
Marielle whipped her head around, her violet eyes flashing with pure fury.
Elios stood behind her chair, dressed in his loose, unbuttoned formal coat with his sleeves casually rolled up to his elbows. He was leaning against the stone balustrade, a lazy, lopsided grin stretched across his handsome face as he watched her struggle with the damp napkin.
"Since I was sitting here peacefully enjoying my tea," Marielle snapped, her voice sharp enough to slice through solid timber, "without expecting a barbarian to sneak up on me like a common thief!"
Elios chuckled softly, completely unfazed by her death glare. He pulled out the empty chair across from her, spun it around, and dropped onto the seat with his legs stretched wide, resting his elbows on his knees.
"Barbarian? That hurts my feelings, Marielle," Elios said, reaching over to pick up a small butter biscuit from her silver tray and tossing it into his mouth. "I came all this way to check on you, and this is how you greet me?"
"You scared the breath out of me," Marielle grumbled, carefully setting the wet napkin aside and smoothing down her velvet skirt, though a faint, lingering flush still warmed her neck. "And you ruined a perfectly good cup of imported tea."
Elios watched her for a moment, his smile slowly softening into something much quieter, much more observant. The lighthearted banter hung in the air for a second before Elios let out a long, heavy sigh, resting his chin against his palm.
"So... about the betrothal," Elios said softly, his bright, casual tone completely dropping away.
Marielle didn’t blink. She reached for the silver teapot, refilling her cup with steady, precise movements. "What about it?"
"Marielle," Elios said, his dark eyebrows pulling together in a serious, heavy crease. "Are you really going through with this? With Iryna?"
Marielle paused, holding the porcelain handle mid-air before setting the teapot down with a soft click. She picked up her fresh cup, blowing gently across the steaming surface. "Unbelievable, isn’t it? A woman like me, settling down into formal matrimony."
Elios didn’t laugh. He leaned forward and stared at her face for a long moment, as though he were waiting for it to confess something on its own. His eyes moved from her eyes to her mouth and back again, studying every little change in her expression.
"Is the princess threatening you?" Elios asked. "Did she find some kind of leverage over the north? Because if they did, His Grace and I can..."
"Elios, please," Marielle interrupted, letting out a short, amused breath as she set her cup down. "Why do all of you men immediately assume that a tiny, calculating princess can somehow threaten me? Do I look like someone who gets backed into a corner by a political house?"
"Then why do it?" Elios pushed, his posture rigid, his hand gripping the edge of the iron table so hard his knuckles turned white. "You’ve spent years dodging every high-society courtship in this empire. You hate political marriages. You hate the court’s games. So why tie yourself to them now?"
Marielle looked at him, her eyes calm and sharp as though his sudden burst of protective anger had done nothing to rattle her.
Elios stared at her silent, composed face for three long seconds. Then the color seemed to drain from his face as pure horror took over his expression. His jaw dropped so far that Marielle briefly wondered if he had forgotten how to close it.
"Surely not," Elios whispered, leaning back in his chair as if he had just been struck by lightning. "Don’t tell me... did you actually fall for her?"
"Pfft..."
Marielle choked on her tea for the second time in ten minutes, coughing violently into her hand as her head snapped up.
"Elios! You better watch what comes out of your mouth!" Marielle choked out, her face instantly turning bright red from a mix of hot tea and utter disbelief. "Who fell? Who is falling? I am sitting here, soundly, in my own chair!"
"You’re blushing!" Elios pointed an accusing finger at her, though a tiny, bewildered grin was already fighting its way back onto his face. "I’ve known you since we were little, Marielle! I’ve watched you insult princes, terrify grown men, and stare down a room full of nobles like you were deciding which one to bury first. And now..."
"I am not flustered, I am suffocating because you keep making ridiculous assumptions!" Marielle snapped, grabbing a clean napkin to wipe her mouth. She took a deep breath, forcing her posture back into its regal, unshakeable state, though the warmth in her cheeks took a moment longer to fade.
"I am not in love with the princess," Marielle said. "This is not a romance, Elios. This is a leash."
Elios quieted down, his playful smirk fading as he listened to her.
"I didn’t agree to this blindly," Marielle said, leaning forward and resting her chin against her steepled fingers. "I sat down with Zarius and Cherion and went through every possible consequence."
A small smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. "I’ll admit, some of the terms I suggested were a little... excessive. Brother and Cherion pretty much insisted we revise a few of them." She hummed thoughtfully. "Apparently, there is such a thing as going too far."
Elios snorted.
"So we revised them. A few things had to be softened, but the important parts remained. I know exactly what I’m allowing, what I’m giving them, and what I’m keeping out of their reach."
She looked at Elios, her eyes glinting with a cold, terrifying intelligence that reminded him instantly why she was a Valtrane.
Elios sat back, letting out a long, whistle-like breath through his teeth. "You really are a terrifying woman, you know that?"
"I take that as a compliment," Marielle replied smoothly.
Elios looked at her for a long moment, the tension finally leaving his broad shoulders. He reached across the small tea table, his large, calloused hand resting gently over hers.
"Just... don’t push yourself too hard," Elios said softly, his voice carrying a genuine, quiet warmth that made Marielle’s sharp expression soften just a fraction. "The North has enough enemies right now. I don’t want you taking on the Solaric by yourself."
Marielle looked down at his hand, then up into his familiar, earnest face. Slowly, she reached up with her free hand, her soft fingers gently touching the side of his cheek, giving his skin a small, affectionate squeeze.
"Don’t worry so much, Elios," Marielle whispered, a small, confident smile touching her lips. "I won’t let anyone walk all over me or the North. Not the princess, not her empire, and certainly not this empire."
