Chapter 453: A Strange Kind of Reverence

"I have... power?"

Philia’s voice was barely a whisper, thin and hesitant in the quiet room.

He stood near the corner of the small table, his shoulders drawn slightly inward, staring at the tall young man who had just been dropped into his life like an unexpected shadow. The head steward’s heavy, dismissive footsteps had long since faded down the corridor outside, leaving an uncomfortable, suffocating stillness behind.

Valen didn’t move an inch. He stood in the center of the low-ceilinged room, his posture rigid, his eyes fixed on Philia with an intensity that made the skin on the back of Philia’s neck prickle.

Slowly, Valen gave a single, firm nod. "Yes, My Lord. An extraordinary power."

Philia looked at him for two long, silent seconds. A cold, uneasy knot began to tighten in his stomach. He wasn’t a noble. He was a nobody from an orphanage, dragged into the back halls of the imperial palace simply because the Crown Prince had taken a strange, gentle pity on him. He didn’t have money, he didn’t have a lineage, and he certainly didn’t have magic.

"I think... you have the wrong person," Philia said softly, taking a cautious half-step backward toward the door. A polite, harmless smile slipped onto his lips, the same artificial mask he wore whenever the palace gossips sneered at him in the gardens. "I am just me. There’s nothing special about me."

He reached out, his fingers touching the cool latches of the door. "If you’ll excuse me, I should call the head steward back. I think there’s been a mistake with the assignment. You... you’re scaring me a little."

"The massacre at your home years ago," Valen said quietly.

Philia froze. His hand locked dead over the door handle.

The faint, polite smile on his face vanished in an instant, replaced by a sudden, sickening paleness that bled every drop of color from his cheeks. His breath hitched violently in his throat, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Slowly, Philia turned his head back around to look at the stranger.

"What did you just say?" Philia whispered, his voice trembling so hard the words almost fell apart.

"Your parents did not die in a simple fire, Lord Philia," Valen continued, his tone flat, even, and horrifyingly precise. "And the men who burned your family’s home were not common bandits looking for gold. They came for the bloodline. They came because your father carried an anomaly, an ancient, dormant power. One they feared greatly."

"Who are you?" Philia choked out, his back slamming hard against the door as if he were trying to push himself straight through the wood. A flash of pure terror crossed his eyes. "How do you know about that? Who sent you here? Are you one of them?"

"No, I’m certainly not," Valen replied smoothly.

He took one slow step forward, keeping his hands low and completely visible, showing no threat, no aggression. Yet there was a terrifying, absolute certainty in every line of his tall frame.

"My father was a friend of your parents," Valen said, his voice quieter now. "He was one of the few people who knew about your family’s power and understood what it could mean if the wrong people discovered you had inherited it. After your parents died, he spent the last few years of his life searching for you. He wanted to find you before anyone else did, to make sure you were safe, to keep anyone from exploiting your power, and, if he could, to help you learn how to control it."

"He never stopped looking," Valen continued. "Even when everyone else assumed you were dead or gone for good, he refused to believe it. He kept searching, following every rumor and every scrap of information he could find. He knew he might never get the chance to meet you himself, but he wanted to make sure that, if you were ever found, you wouldn’t have to face your power alone."

Philia stared at him, his mind reeling in a chaotic fog. He remembered the smell of smoke. He remembered the cold mud under his bare feet, the desperate screams of his mother in the dark, and the terrifying, unnatural heat that had scorched the night sky before everything went black. For years, he had believed he was simply an unfortunate survivor of a senseless tragedy, a child who had lost his entire family and somehow ended up in an orphanage.

"It took years to follow the trail from one place to Havenwood, and finally here, inside the imperial palace walls."

Valen slowly dropped to one knee on the cold stone floor, bringing himself lower than Philia. He reached out, his hand hovering in the air for a fraction of a second before gently, reverently taking hold of Philia’s pale, trembling fingers.

The touch was warm, solid, and firm.

"Your family carried a power that frightened the grand archmages of this empire, My Lord," Valen whispered, his eyes looking up into Philia’s pale face with a fierce, quiet devotion. "They tried to erase your name so the world would forget you ever existed. They thought if they burned the estate, the bloodline would die out in the dirt."

Philia felt a hot, prickling sensation behind his eyes. His throat felt completely raw, as if he had swallowed broken glass. "I... I don’t have any power, Valen."

"It is dormant because you were taught to hide it," Valen corrected softly, his fingers tightening slightly around Philia’s hand, offering an anchor in the storm raging inside his mind. "It is dormant because you have spent your whole life trying to survive by being invisible. But it is inside you. I can feel the faint presence beneath your skin right now"

Philia looked down at their joined hands. The cold flicker of uncertainty deep in his chest didn’t vanish, if anything, it grew into a heavy, terrifying weight that threatened to crush him. But beneath the terror, a strange, dark ember began to stir.

All those years of hardship at the orphanage... all those quiet, bitter nights spent listening to noble ladies mock his commoner origins while Cherion Antel looked at him with open disdain...

It wasn’t just bad luck. It wasn’t just fate being cruel.

They had murdered his family. They had turned his life into ash and forced him to beg for scraps at the feet of the very empire that had butchered his bloodline.

"What do you want from me?"

"I want nothing from you, My Lord," Valen answered. "I am not here for a reward, a title, or anything you might be able to give me. I am here because my father spent the last years of his life searching for you. Even when his health began to fail, he refused to give up. He wanted to find you, protect you, and make sure you would never have to face this world without someone on your side."

Valen lowered his gaze for a moment, his voice growing quieter.

"Before he died, he made me promise that if I ever found you, I would take his place. That I would protect you in his stead and help you understand the power your family left you with. I intend to keep that promise."

Philia stared at his new attendant for a long, suffocating moment. Slowly, the trembling in Philia’s hands began to subside. He didn’t pull his fingers away from Valen’s grip.

Philia took a deep breath, struggling to take in the reality of what he had just learned. He looked down at the man kneeling before him. There was no pity in his eyes, no disgust, no attempt to comfort him with empty kindness. Only a deep respect that never wavered, as though Philia was someone worth honoring rather than someone to be ashamed of.

"Then stay, Valen," Philia said. "Teach me about this power."
