I Am Zeus

Chapter 419: Nyxara’s Price

Nyxara’s watch-post balanced on a black stone rise overlooking the boundary terraces. Half-fortress, half-den. Lanterns burned with steady pale fire. Walls of Threshold plate and old bone-law sealed the ash wind. Inside, accommodation for the nine to stand without stacking and a low table for maps were provided, with weapon racks and a side chamber of clean water and binding cloth. It was the first place since Continuum custody to feel designed for surviving the night rather than surviving politics.

"Sit," Nyxara ordered. "Wounded first. Talk second."

She worked without show. Poseidon’s split shoulder got packed and bound. Hermes’ cut arm sealed with a bitter salve that smelled like burned mint. Zeus’ cold burn from the wraith was cleaned hard enough to sting then wrapped. Athena noted each movement Nyxara made around him. Hades refused full treatment and took a cloth only. Kratos permitted her to bind one scraped knuckle and nothing more.

Sun Wukong poked a hanging charm by the door. "Nice den. Do the monsters knock before entering, or is that only for guests?"

"They enter whenever they smell weakness," Nyxara said. "So do not look weak."

When the worst wounds were dealt with, a rough peace settled over the post. Map light cast long shadows. Outside, the Ashen Threshold made low weather noises like distant stone grinding its teeth. Nyxara sent the others toward food stores and spare bedding with a flick of her hand.

"Carrier stays," she stated.

Athena did not move. "He stays with eyes on him."

Nyxara looked directly at her. "Then keep your eyes open. I am not asking him into a trap. I am collecting price."

Zeus exhaled once. "Go. All of you. Stay in call range."

Poseidon clearly hated it. Loki looked amused. Hades gave Nyxara a flat warning stare before turning away. One by one they shifted into the outer chamber until Zeus and Nyxara stood alone by the map table and side cot.

Nyxara did not pace around the point.

She stepped into him, took his jaw and kissed him hard enough it left no doubt as to what price she meant. There was no soft testing, no shy pause. Her mouth was hot. Her body pressed full against his, armor edges scraping, fingers already at the fastenings of his gear with practiced speed.

"You can stop this," she said against his mouth. "If you do, guidance still costs something else. If you do not, I take what I want and you receive the first layer truth after."

Zeus caught her wrist once, not to push her away but to make the choice conscious. Residual force under his skin surged at the contact – responsive and unstable. In the Ashen Threshold it felt less like a sealed weapon and more like blood answering appetite.

"I am not a prize on your rack," he said.

"Good," Nyxara answered. "I prefer men who know that and still come to bed."

She shoved him back onto the cot.

What followed was raw and direct. Nyxara straddled him, stripping enough armor to free skin and took control without asking for choreography. Zeus met her with equal force, hands gripping her hips, mouth on her throat, residual heat bleeding through every point of contact. She bit his shoulder over the fresh bandage and laughed under her breath when he cursed. There was little tenderness in it. There was hunger, friction, sweat and the hard rhythm of two fighters using each other without apology.

When she drove him over the edge, residual force spiked hard enough to rattle the nearest map weights. Nyxara held through it, forehead against his, breath rough, body locked around him until the tremor passed. For a moment the watch-post felt smaller, denser as if Threshold law itself had leaned in to notice.

Afterwards she did not curl up like a lover from softer worlds. She braced on one elbow, half over him, ash-dark hair loose now, mouth swollen from kissing.

"First trial layer is already active," she said.

Zeus stared at the low ceiling and tried to steady his breathing. "Since when?"

"Since you crossed. Boundary wraiths were not random welcome. The Threshold tests entry under pressure. Combat was the open part." Her fingers traced a line down his chest, not gentle, possessive. "This was the other part. Continuity carriers throw force when blood runs high. Lust, fear, rage. The trial reads coherence through all of it. You did not rupture the post. That is a pass, not a romance."

"You could have said that before stripping me."

Nyxara smiled, sharp and unashamed. "I could have. I did not want to."

From the outer chamber came the voice of Poseidon, deliberately loud. "If you two are finished negotiating, the maps better be worth it."

Athena said nothing. That silence had weight.

Nyxara sat up and began putting armor back into place with efficient movements. "Deep first layer sits beyond the ash canyons. Serpent packs own the cuts. Judgment constructs still walk there when disturbed. Your people will need more than House formation habits."

Zeus rose and dressed. His body ached in clean places and burned in the wraith wound. Residual force had quieted but it felt closer to the surface than before, as if Nyxara had sanded down one more layer of restraint.

"And your price is paid?" he asked.

"For entry guidance, yes," Nyxara said. "For deeper roads, no. Threshold women do not live on one transaction."

She tossed him a dark metal token marked with her seal. "Carry that if you want local things to think twice before biting. It also tells other wardens you are under my current interest."

"Current interest," Zeus repeated.

"I do not make eternal vows for one good fuck," Nyxara said. "I make useful ones."

Before he could answer, the outer wall shuddered.

Not weather.

Impact.

A shriek cut across the rise, then another, layered and wet. The lanterns jumped. Something heavy smacked into the lower post supports hard enough to crack seal-lines.

Nyxara’s expression snapped from afterglow to command in an instant. "Ash-serpents. Pack line. Up. Now."

The outer chamber erupted into motion. Athena was already armed. Kratos hit the door brace. Hades’ green light flared. Zeus barely had his gear sealed when the first serpent head tore through a side vent, jaws split into three ash-bone forks. Nyxara slammed a spear-point of Threshold plate through its eye and ripped sideways.

"Out or under!" she shouted. "If they collapse the rise, this den becomes a grave!"

There was no time for dignity. Half-bound armor, unfastened straps, weapons snatched from racks. Poseidon cursed steadily as he kicked the main door wide. Sun Wukong vaulted a bench and smashed the next serpent skull before it cleared the frame. Loki dragged Hermes aside as venom-ash sprayed the floor black.

Zeus took the threshold with Nyxara and Athena, residual force hot under his skin, body still marked by her hands, and met the pack as it swarmed the rise in a tide of ash-scale and broken teeth.

Guidance had been paid.

The Threshold had already come to collect the next cost.
