I Am Zeus
Chapter 418: Crossing
Ashen Threshold did not allow them passage quietly.
The boundary had the feel of a pale tear against Continuum law, wide enough for a war-line and thin enough to feel unsteady beneath the gaze. One moment the nine were still along the mapped route-edge. Then the world beneath their feet turned to ash-glass and dying endings. Thick air pressed the sound from ears. Residual force in Zeus rose in a tight protest against the pressure before settling into a cautious hum.
"Formation," Athena said.
They barely found their footing before the first boundary wraiths surged from the ash-glass.
The creatures were not yet fully spirit and scarcely beasts. Their forms bore the feel of peeled law and starved memory stitched into long bodies with too many joints. The first struck at Kratos and sparked black from his chains. A second lunged towards Hermes and nearly severed his arm before Poseidon split it cleanly with a hard lateral strike. More wraiths tumbled from the tear in a steady rush, shrieking in broken route-voice.
Sun Wukong took one laughing under his breath, staff turning skulls of ash to powder. Odin pinned one to the ground with Gungnir and twisted until it ceased reforming. Loki carved the tendons from another’s open sides and left it collapse to grit. Hades pulled two together with death pressure and crushed them until their shapes forgot how to stand.
Zeus took center line.
A wraith came at him with a maw of snapped judgment marks. He forced through with controlled residual force, enough to break the creature, not enough to flare like a beacon. Another latched to Zeus’s shoulder and burned cold into his skin. Athena’s spear took the one through the spine-seam and tore it away.
"They are endless," Hermes shouted.
"Then stop fighting like they matter one by one," Poseidon snarled, and he slammed a wave of raw force through the ash-glass under the next pack. The surface broke. Some wraiths fell into the fracture and came apart in the undertow.
It was not clean.
A larger wraith, bulked with ended crowns and split faces, forced through the boundary and came straight for Zeus. Residual force under his ribs lifted in recognition of danger. He held threshold by will and met the creature head-on. Chains from Kratos wrapped one of the wraith’s arms. Hades hooked its lower body. Athena drove for the center seam. Zeus poured just enough chaos through his fist to unmake the seam when it opened.
The large one burst into pale dust.
More was coming.
Then a woman’s voice cut across the boundary like a blade through cloth.
"Enough."
A single seal flashed from the Threshold side, dark silver and absolute within the local range. The remaining wraiths broke apart mid-lunge, not killed by blunt force, dismissed by the authority that owned this edge. Ash settled. The tear calmed. The nine remained in a fighting stance because none of them felt trust in sudden rescue.
She walked out of the pale dark as if she had been watching the entire fight for sport.
Tall. Ash-dark hair bound high. Armor that grew from Threshold plate rather than forged in House style. The woman’s mouth held a half-smile, and her eyes swept over them all, lingering on Zeus with less reserve than the rest. There was no bashfulness in the look. She studied him as a fighter studied a weapon she might pick up with her hands.
"You cross loud for first-timers," she said. "Boundary wraiths usually eat the soft ones before I bother coming down."
Tohu’s residual marks still bore life at Zeus’s back, but Ashen Threshold law made House supervision feel thin here. Jehovah’s presence was distant. This place did not care for their old claim fights.
Athena kept her spear up. "Name."
"Nyxara," the woman said. "Warden of this edge. You are the continuity strays the deep marks have been muttering about." Her eyes returned to Zeus. "And you are the carrier. You fight like someone trying not to wake his own blood. That will get you killed deeper in."
Zeus rolled the burned shoulder once. "We did not come here to die at the door."
"Good," Nyxara said. "Because the door is the gentle part."
Sun Wukong laid his staff across his neck. "You always wait until after the screaming to introduce yourself?"
"I like to see what people look like when they are busy staying alive." Nyxara leaned closer to Zeus, near enough that ash-dust from her armor marked the space between them. "House-leash logic will not carry you through Ashen Threshold. Out there, things either take what they want or get taken. Guidance has a price. Protection has a price. Information has a price."
Hades’s stare was cold. "And what price do you charge strangers?"
Nyxara glanced at him, then back to Zeus, the smile sharpening. "Depends how interesting the stranger is."
There was no subtlety in the statement. She allowed the meaning to hang bare.
Poseidon made a rough sound in his throat. Loki looked almost delighted. Athena did not lower her spear, but her eyes narrowed with a different kind of caution.
Zeus held Nyxara’s gaze. "We came for trial answers, not to decorate someone’s watch-post."
"Answers are deeper than this edge," Nyxara said. "And you will not reach them by standing in ash-glass pretending you still answer only to Continuum supervisors. My watch-post is close. Fire, real maps of the first layer, and fewer things with too many joints trying to chew through your ribs." Her voice dropped a fraction. "If you want real guidance instead of House leash logic, come up. If you do not, keep bleeding through the boundary until the next pack arrives. They always arrive."
Kratos looked at Zeus. No speech. Only readiness for either choice.
Hermes checked the pale dark beyond Nyxara. "She did end the wraith line."
"She also looked at him like dinner," Poseidon muttered.
Nyxara heard it and did not deny it. "I look at what survives. In Ashen Threshold, that is the only compliment that matters."
Zeus glanced once at Athena, then at the rest of the nine. The old Continuum board was already behind them. Seed language, continuity marks, restricted operator status, all of it had pointed here. Standing proud in the ash while more boundary predators gathered would not make them freer. It would only make them dead.
"We go," Zeus said. "Guidance first. Prices spoken plain. No one gets separated."
Nyxara’s smile widened as if she had won a small bet with herself. "Plain prices. I can do that."
She turned to lead them off the boundary sheet towards a rise of black stone and lantern-fire deeper in the Threshold edge. Behind them, the pale tear kept whispering to distant wraith-noise. Ahead of them, Ashen Threshold opened into broken terraces and dead-law weather.
Zeus walked near the front, and he felt residual force lean not only towards danger, but towards the woman who had claimed the edge with one seal and looked at him without shame.
The crossing was done.
The Threshold had already begun to take its cut.
