I Am Zeus

Chapter 415: Controlled Assignment

  • Next Chapter

The assignment presented itself before the grey lane had fully settled.

Jehovah refused to cast it in the wording of trust. He used the language of measurement. The nine would exit under severe thresholds, extract a stolen continuity fragment from a minor faction holding out in a low watch transit pocket, and return without residual surge, private bargains, or deviation from the route. Success maintained their operational status. Failure negated it entirely.

Tohu provided the specifics. "The faction calls itself the Pale Fold. Minor, opportunistic, not Black Star. They stole a continuity fragment during one of the previous scrubs and are trying to sell it. You retrieve the fragment. You do not negotiate the board while doing it."

Poseidon studied the tip of his trident. "And if they fight?"

"Finish the negotiation within the assignment limits," Tohu said. "Do not make a public spectacle. Do not pursue side leads."

Sera observed the exchange with a placid face that convinced precisely no one. "How very responsible. A loyalty test disguised as field work."

Athena turned her head slightly. "If you know the buyers for the Pale Fold, now would be the time to state it."

Sera’s smile did not change. "If I traded away every market rumor on the cheap, what would you have to sell?"

Zeus noted that response, but remained silent.

They secured approved seals and entered the low watch pocket. The location featured a jumble of broken courier platforms and collapsed holding spines, ample for an ambush and undesirable enough that no major Houses exercised permanent investment. Hermes outlined the approach. Odin listened for false lulls in the soundscape. Kratos took point with Zeus. The others secured the sides.

The Pale Fold revealed themselves promptly. Six operatives in mismatched armor and continuity tongs designed for stolen residue rather than proper research. The leader of the group, a thin figure with silver scar lines down both arms, raised a single hand as the nine arrived.

"Restricted celebrities," the leader said. "We wondered how long before you sent a collar team."

Sun Wukong’s smile did not extend to his eyes. "Hand over the fragment and you may continue your speculations elsewhere."

"We may hand it over," the leader said. "We may also require you to bid against those who have already purchased the information for its route."

Hades’s green light thickened. "Who purchased?"

The leader’s gaze swept past Jehovah’s distant mark and Tohu’s presence to study the outer watch line, where Sera’s influence lingered like a scent. He forced himself to look away.

Loki recognized the error immediately. "Ah."

Athena’s voice lost all warmth. "Sera."

The Pale Fold leader decided conversation had grown too dear and opened with an attack instead. The pocket erupted into short range combat. Continuity tongs slashed at Zeus first, seeking to draw off residual force rather than flesh. He held the power within thresholds through sheer will and allowed Kratos to break the first tong-bearer against a support spine. Athena cut in on the left flank in precise hard lines. Poseidon shattered the ground at two runners’ feet, pinning them in the broken route stone. Hades dragged one writhing operative out of phase long enough for Odin’s spear to finish the job. Hermes carved at their exits as they opened, and Sun Wukong scattered the rear. Loki ensured the leader did not escape into a side seam.

It was messy, but contained. Perfect for the assignment.

When it ended, the fragment case rested under Zeus’s grip, sealed in pale continuity glass. The residual force within him gravitated toward it immediately, strong enough that Tohu’s threshold watch flared.

"Hold," Tohu said from the supervision line.

"I am holding," Zeus rumbled through his teeth. He did not open the case. He did not pass the power along. He anchored the sensation until the pull shifted from command to discomfort.

Hermes yanked the Pale Fold leader up by his collar. "You stated buyers purchased the route information. Whose money?"

The leader coughed up a mouthful of blood and grinned. "You already know. She trades position on you the way other people trade weather. Not full ownership. Just enough of your patterns to let smaller players gain courage."

Sera’s name required no elaboration.

The Poseidon turned toward the outer line, as if he could reach her across the marks. "I am going to throw her through a gate."

"After," Athena said, though her own gaze burned with fury. "Complete the assignment. If we fail at the limits, Malakhiel achieves the recall he desires and she wins regardless."

Zeus secured the fragment case to formal carry and regarded the defeated Pale Fold. "What specific information did she trade?"

The leader shrugged his live shoulder. "Enough to recognize when residual eyes are watching, when your approved routes shift, and when continuity scraps grow warm. She does not sell you whole. She sells the edges around you to both sides. Those who want the key. Those who want the key broken."

Hades’s expression became murderous. "Both sides."

"That is the right trade," the leader said. "Until one grows willing to pay more."

They pulled the fragment and evidence back under threshold watch. No surge, no side pursuit, no broken line boundaries. A superficial success.

At the return mark, Jehovah accepted the case and report with the same icy precision as always. Operational success remained intact. Controlled assignment complete. Tohu noted residual levels had remained within limits.

Then Zeus inserted the Pale Fold leader’s confession into the open.

"Sera traded movement edges around us to more than one side," he said. "Including those who profit if continuity fragments emerge in the wrong hands."

Sera showed no surprise. She stood under formal watch and allowed the accusation to settle like a familiar jacket. "I traded survival leverage in a board where loyalty gets you erased. If minor factions understand enough not to trip over you blindly, the overall market remains less foolish. That is not the same as giving Black Star a kill key."

Athena took a step closer. "You traded our edges to those who seek restart potential and those who seek us. Do not pretend it is public service."

Sera’s gaze shifted to Zeus. "You still have your fragment and your status. You also possess me as a dispute holder who understands this board’s true nature. If you remove me now, you will feel the gaps in your knowledge with particular speed."

Tohu’s voice remained hard. "Or we reduce you to watched standing and consider every route around you tainted."

Jehovah secured the assignment result, then the fresh political wound. "Operational success is noted. Double trade evidence noted. Sera’s access narrows until full accounting. The nine maintain status. For now."

Zeus retained one hand on the continuity fragment case, feeling residual force press against the glass like recognition of a familiar road.

They had passed the test.

And learned that one of the powers nearest their survival had been selling the shape of their shadow to both hope and erasure.

That was not the end of the road.

It was proof the road had long been measured in more hands than they had considered.
