I Am Zeus

Chapter 413: The Independent

No one was unrelaxed in the presence of the stranger in the grey lane.

Tohu had residual authority at the surface. Athena’s spear was aimed at the man’s center. Kratos had one chain loop clear at the wrist. Hades regarded him with open dislike, raw from seed language and the borrowed memory of selection. Jehovah’s supervision pressed at his edge like a warning that this conversation was already near a line.

Zeus spoke first. "You know the phrase. You know the route language. Tell us your name and motivation."

The independent lowered his hands but did not bow. "Call me Rhen. I move roads that are incomplete, continuity scraps, judgment edges. Not of House. Not of Black Star. Not one of Sera’s bought eyes. I work where the maps are thin."

Sera’s observers stiffened at the rear, which only made Rhen’s faint smile deepen.

"And why are you here?" Athena asked.

"A trade," Rhen said. "I can give one a live continuity lead that is not half scrubbed. In exchange, I need you to carry a sealed marker through a restricted cut ahead of this lane and release it into an old relay hollow. Movement simple. Permissions ugly."

Poseidon scoffed. "Simple movement through restricted space is how fools get erased."

"Yes," Rhen said. "Also how people find answers their supervisors won’t accept."

Jehovah’s mark flared hard enough for all of them to feel the coming refusal. Tohu raised a hand slightly, in no support of Rhen but to keep the moment from collapsing into immediate force.

Hermes cast the independent a professional distrustful gaze. "What does the sealed mark do?"

"It restores a continuity thread Black Star tried to drown," Rhen said. "If it reaches the hollow intact, one more node on your road survives. If it does not, your working map continues to die at one point at a time."

Sun Wukong leaned on his staff. "And why us?"

Rhen’s gaze went to meet Zeus’s when he answered. "Because the carrier has residual force enough to walk continuity residue without burning it out. Most messengers either trigger scrub teams or erase the thread carrying it wrong. You are already marked by the same pattern. Useful."

Hades’s voice was low. "Useful. Again."

"Honest," Rhen said. "If you wanted more palatable words you should have stayed salvage."

Loki laughed, low in his throat. "I almost like him."

Athena did not. "This favor pushes us out of approval movement. That is a risk to the operational status we bled to gain."

"It is," Rhen said. "That is the price. Jehovah’s limits preserve you in a narrow way. They also delay you from every continuity node that matters. Someone is scrubbing faster than official permission moves. If you walk only where the leash permits, you will know the truth by the time the road is gone."

Zeus felt the residual force under his skin lean toward Rhen’s sealed mark pouch, not in command but in recognition. The continuity pattern was there, faint and real, making the offer difficult, not easy.

"What is the lead?" Zeus asked. "Full lead first. Favor second."

Rhen shook his head once. "Half now. Half after the hollow. Half now is this: the continuity mark is not being hunted only because it proves you were selected. It is being hunted because it can restart terminated potential."

The grey lane seemed to narrow around that sentence.

Tohu’s eyes sharpened. "Restart."

"Yes," Rhen said. "Judgment ends a design. Continuity residue of this class can reopen what ending closed, not the return of the old world but potential restarted by living carriers. That is why erasure interests want you gone. That is why some continuity powers want you preserved. You are not only survivors. You are a possible key."

Odin’s fingers closed on Gungnir. "Seed language."

"Exactly," Rhen said.

Jehovah’s supervision was finally taking shape in the lane as formal command. "Rejected. No restricted cut. No unofficial carry. Return to approved emergency routing."

Sera’s voice was mellow towards the rear. "Official routing is how your map continues to shrink."

Poseidon went to her. "Stay out of this."

"I am in this whether you like it or not," she said.

Zeus kept his gaze on Rhen. "What happens if we refuse?"

"Then I leave," Rhen said. "You keep your clean limits. I keep my sealed mark. The next continuity node on your path will likely be empty by the time you earn permission to reach it."

Kratos spoke flatly. "And if he is lying, we lose our standing for nothing."

"If he is right," Hermes said, "we lose the road by obedience."

Athena met Zeus’s gaze. "This is the leash test. Not from Malakhiel. From the board itself."

Zeus took in all of it in one breath and one feeling: Jehovah’s rigid protection, Tohu’s hunger to understand residual force, Sera’s opportunist spirit, Hades’s anger at being chosen whilst others died, and the quiet pull of a continuity thread that might yet lead to the one who had selected them.

"We do not hand you the trust," Zeus said to Rhen. "We take the sealed mark under our watch, inspect what can be inspected, and if it is not a trap, we decide the cut. If it is a trap, you will not leave this lane walking."

Rhen seemed to consider his approval. "Then inspect quickly. The scrub teams do not wait for committee feelings."

Tohu came closer to Zeus in voice low and hard. "Jehovah will mark this as a breach if we cross the cut."

"I know," Zeus said.

"And if the restart theory is real," Tohu added, "every faction that fears terminated things rising again will press harder than before."

Zeus looked at the nine, then at the sealed mark in Rhen’s hand, then at the grey lane stretching out before them into half-legal dark.

"If we are seed," he said, "I want to know what we were meant to grow into before someone finishes the choice for us."

Behind them stood the official law, pressing for their return.

Ahead of them was an independent offering a road that could undo their standing and reveal why their survival was still enough to kill for.

The leash held.

The temptation held with it.

And the word restart had already changed the weight of every step forward.
