I Am Zeus

Chapter 412: Seed Language

The shared memory left them raw, and argument arose swiftly.

They had been shifted from their shallow holding into a restricted transit bay while Jehovah and Tohu reset thresholds and route permissions. The delay had allowed the nine enough privacy to turn on the word that had been sitting in them like a second bruise.

Seed.

It was Poseidon who said it first and said it like a curse. "I will not be planted by the same kind of power that watched our world die. Purpose is just a prettier word for use."

Athena kept her arms folded tight. "Use is already the board we are on. House control, residual instruction, Sera’s claim, erasure teams, continuity marks. The question is whether seed means that we are only tools, or whether it means that we were kept because we can become more than remains."

Hades laughed once more, short and empty. "Become more. Our world is ash. She is gone. And some unseen power stamped us as seed while the rest were left to end. Do not ask me to find honor in that."

Sun Wukong leaned on his staff and looked between them. "I hate it too. But I also know this much. If the person kept us for later, then later can still be stolen from them. Being chosen is not the same as being owned for ever."

Loki tipped his head. "That depends on how strong the chooser is. Seed is patient language. Patient powers build cages that look like destinies."

Kratos broke the back and forth with a flat line. "If the word makes us fight each other, then what use is it?"

Zeus had kept silent longer than the rest of them; that residual force still sore under his skin from the borrowed memory. And who better to look at than Hades who’s wound was the deepest in the room.

"I am not asking you to bless the one who selected us," Zeus said. "I am asking us not to break apart over a phrase before we find the speaker. If we are seed to someone, then we learn what that someone wants. After that we decide whether we grow their way or burn the plan."

Hades’s green eyes held him. "And if the plan is all we have left?"

"Then we still decide," Zeus said. "We did not survive only to become obedient soil."

Hermes was about to open his mouth, likely to turn the whole thing towards routes and options when the bay’s approved exit mark died.

Not dimmed. Died.

Tohu was at the threshold in an instant and Jehovah’s supervision flared hard over the bay. Outside the sealed gate, the Continuum law rearranged in a hard clean sweep. Their approved route was gone, rewritten into closed status while they watched.

Poseidon raised the trident. "Ambush?"

"Not yet," Tohu said. "Route closure. Official enough to block us, fast enough to smell like interference."

Jehovah’s mark carried a clipped order through the bay. "Primary path is compromised. Transfer to secondary grey-lane corridor under emergency restriction. Immediate move. No debate."

Sera’s observers were already shifting position which told Zeus she had either expected this or adapted faster than the rest. Athena simply looked once at Zeus, then at the dead exit.

"Argument later," she said. "Movement now."

They moved.

The grey-lane detour was narrower and uglier than its approved Continuum traffic. Half-legal marks clung to the walls. Old courier scars and private route patches overlapped til the law felt slippery underfoot. Visibility dropped and sound came in broken pockets. It was the kind of path used by beings who did not want House eyes counting their steps.

Odin muttered, "This lane has carried secrets. Too many of them."

"Just keep formation," Athena said.

They were halfway through the first long bend when the independent stepped out of a side seam as if the lane itself had agreed to ignore him.

He was not armored like Black Star and not stamped with House color. His clothes looked worn by long transit and his presence sat oddly light for the Continuum as if he had practiced not being worth the official attention of others. He raised both empty hands, not in fear, more in courtesy.

Tohu stopped hard. "Name yourself."

The stranger’s eyes moved over the nine, lingered on Zeus and then he said almost mildly, "You do not look like salvage."

The argument from the bay slammed back into the corridor without warning.

Hades’s power thickened the air immediately. "Choose your next words with care."

The independent gave a rather small nod, as if he respected that. "I said seed, not salvage. That is the language, is it not? Continuity mark. Selected route. Nine coherent remainders pulled through a judgment ending. You are walking like people still deciding whether that phrase is a wound or a direction."

Zeus felt the residual force under his skin lean towards the man without rising into a surge. Not recognition of a master, but recognition of someone who had touched the same road.

"You know the fragment," Zeus said.

"I know the language around it," the independent replied. "And I know that this grey lane was closed ahead of you on purpose. If you continue running blind through emergency routes, the next closure will not be polite."

Athena raised her spear a fraction. "Are you the one who opened the window?"

"No," the independent said. "I am not that high and not that old. I only work near the edges of what that kind of power leaves behind."

Jehovah’s supervision pressed at the edge of the lane in a distant and demanding identification. Tohu’s stance said he was one wrong movement from ending the conversation by force. Sera’s observers had stopped dead in the rear and were watching with open hunger.

Zeus moved up enough to hold the centre and said, "If you know the language then you know why we are in this lane. Talk plain. What do you want?"

The independent glanced along the grey route, then back to Zeus and the eight around him.

"I want to keep a continuity road from being scrubbed out of existence," he said. "You want to know why you remained. Those needs meet here. Whether you treat seed as chains or chance is your business. But if you keep arguing that word in dead bays while erasure interests close your routes, you will die with only the phrase and no answer."

The grey lane hummed around them, half-legal.

Behind them, the approved world had already shut one door.

And ahead of them, a stranger who should not have known their wound stood waiting with a piece of the road.
