I Am Zeus
Chapter 391: First Serious Contact
The heavier presence halted at the edge of the fog lane to allow inspection.
It was taller than the recovery operators they had already fought, layered in plates that bore no House color and no wasted decoration. The pressure it exuded was clean, controlled, sufficient to narrow the air around the nine simply by proximity. This one was not searching. This one had come to conclude the searching.
Zeus felt the chaos under his own skin twitch, once, in answer, and forced it silent. Beside him, Athena settled her spear into a ready line. Kratos shifted his stance to a waiting stance without prompting. Wukong spun his staff once before allowing it to rest across his shoulders, eyes sharp. None of them spoke first.
The armored figure studied their group with patient attention before settling on Zeus with a longer gaze than the others.
"You have made a hard run of it," the figure said. The voice was male, calm, almost conversational. "Blackout routes, false trails, a forced break through sealed structure. For lower-origin survivors, that is better work than most of us expected. It is also over."
Poseidon’s grip in his trident was suddenly tighter. "If you came for talk, say who sent you. If you came for a fight, stop wasting breath."
The figure was not moved. "Tohu sent me. My task is recovery of the residual force tied to your group, and of the one carrying it most clearly. That one is you." He inclined his head slightly towards Zeus. "The rest of you are secondary. Surrender him and the remainder can be sorted with less damage."
Hades laughed once, short and ugly. "You talk like we are cargo with one valuable crate."
"From my side of the board, that is not far from the truth," the agent replied. "I am not here to insult you. I am here to finish a pursuit before Sera’s net closes the section completely and turns this into a three-way mess. Tohu wants the residual force intact. That becomes harder if you keep bleeding yourselves against every operator in range."
Athena’s eyes narrowed. "And if we refuse?"
"Then I take him anyway," the agent said, calmly. "And the rest of you become obstacles instead of survivors. I would prefer not to spend more of you than necessary. Prefer is not the same as require."
Zeus stepped half a pace forward so the others were slightly behind his line. The agent’s attention settled harder on him as he did it. He still did not understand why both hunters fixed on him so tightly, only that every serious line of pressure eventually found his place in the group first.
"You can tell Tohu this," Zeus said. "We did not break out of one claim just to walk into another. If he wants a conversation, he can face us himself. He can stop sending hands to collect us like dropped tools."
The agent tilted his helmet slightly. "Tohu is already closer than you think. My presence is the warning, not the final measure. You are out of soft routes. Sera’s recovery lines are reforming behind you. If you delay here, you will have both sides on you at once. I am offering the cleaner capture."
Sun Wukong slid his staff into both hands. "Cleaner for you."
"Yes," the agent said, without shame. "Cleaner for me. Still better for most of you than a full net collapse in this lane."
Loki’s smile was thin. "I notice your generosity always ends with Zeus in someone else’s custody."
"That is the assignment."
Odin rested Gungnir against the floor and studied the agent through his single eye. "You are strong enough to make good on the threat. I can feel that much. But you are not so strong that nine of us cannot make the price ugly."
"Ugly is acceptable," the agent answered. "Failure is not."
For a moment the lane held only the sound of fog moving through broken architecture. Zeus could feel the others measuring distance, angles, the width of the path, the likely order of attack. They had already paid for one clash today. Another against a denser opponent would cost more. Running was still possible in theory, but the agent’s stance said he had chosen this contact point because the exits were already poor.
Hermes spoke from the rear, voice tight. "If we commit to a fight here, we need to end it fast. Prolonged contact will draw every recovery line still searching this section."
"I know," Zeus said.
He looked at the agent again and felt the old stubbornness rise, the same refusal that had carried him through the end of one world and into the mess of this one. He was tired of beings with higher seats deciding which of them counted as the useful piece.
"No," Zeus said. "We are not handing anyone over. If Tohu wants me, he can come take the risk himself. Until then, you are standing in our way."
The agent’s posture changed only slightly, but the weight in the lane rose hard enough that Poseidon had to plant his feet. "I was told you would say that."
"Then you came prepared," Athena said.
"I did."
The first move was the agent’s.
He crossed the distance faster than the earlier recovery operators had managed and hit the center of their line with a concentrated burst of force meant to break formation. Kratos took the first impact on crossed chains and was driven back three steps, boots tearing marks through the floor. Wukong came in from the side and struck for the helmet joint. The staff landed hard enough to spark, but the agent turned with the blow and threw him into the wall hard enough to crack stone.
Athena thrust for the gap under the arm. The agent caught the spear shaft, forced it wide, and nearly ripped it out of her hands before Poseidon slammed into him from the other side and bought her free again. Hades wrapped dark pressure around the agent’s legs and tried to root him. It held for less than a breath before the agent crushed the binding and sent a shockwave down the lane that forced Hermes and Loki both off balance.
Zeus met him head-on.
Their clash lit the fog in brief, violent flashes. The agent was denser, cleaner, better adapted to Continuum law. Zeus felt every exchange scrape against the limits of what his body had learned since arriving here. The chaos under his skin surged again, harder this time, and for one dangerous moment he almost let it write itself into the fight. He held it back by will alone and used position, weight, and stubborn angles instead.
They broke apart after a flurry that left Zeus’s shoulder numb and the agent’s left plate cracked through.
"You can feel it," the agent said, breathing a little deeper now. "The residual force in you answers when pressed. That is why this does not end with talk."
Zeus wiped blood from his mouth with the back of his hand. "Then stop talking."
Before either side could fully commit again, a second pressure bloomed behind them in the fog. Wider. Familiar in the worst way. Recovery signals. Sera’s net had found the contact point.
Hermes cursed under his breath. "They have the lane. Fast."
The agent did not even look surprised. "I warned you. Delay favors no one."
Athena fell in closer to Zeus, eyes hard. "If we stay, we fight both. If we break, we need a direction that is not already owned."
Zeus tasted iron and fog and the bitter fact that the long escape had finally run out of empty road. The agent in front of them was still ready. Sera’s line was closing from behind. The nine were all still standing, but the margin was gone.
He set his feet again and raised his voice just enough for his people to hear him over the rising pressure.
"Then we make one hole and we survive it."
The agent lowered his stance. Sera’s recovery signals brightened through the rear fog.
And the lane that had been a route became a trap with no remaining soft edge.
