I Am Zeus

Chapter 390: No Clean Exit

  • Next Chapter

Zeus felt the route die before anyone named it.

The blackout fog had given them cover for a while, thick enough to scatter residual trail and thin enough to move through if they stayed careful. That balance broke at the next junction, the left cut sealed with fresh recovery law, the right cut carrying denser pressure than it had an hour earlier. Straight ahead, the fog itself felt narrowed, as if someone had started folding the usable space shut around them.

Wukong was the first to stop, tapping his staff once against the floor. "This path is finished. They are not chasing blind anymore. They are closing doors."

Athena stepped up beside him to watch the sealed left cut, jaw tight. "Sera’s people learned from the last break. If we hit that seal head-on, we announce ourselves to every recovery line in range."

Poseidon wiped fog moisture from his face, looking back the way they had come. "Then we go back and take a different branch before the net finishes the circle."

"No." Hermes remained watching their rear. "The rear is worse. I counted three distinct search patterns folding in behind us. If we reverse now, we run straight into the thick of it."

Hades stood a little apart from the others, green light low under his skin as he focused on the narrowed path ahead. "So we cannot go left, we cannot go back, and the front is being squeezed. That leaves a bad option and a worse one."

Loki gave a thin smile that never reached his eyes. "I do enjoy our range of choices."

Zeus ignored the comment, forcing himself to think in clean lines. The chaos power under his skin answered the pressure around them with a restless push, but he stayed it down. Using it too soon would only paint a brighter target on the group. He looked from the sealed cut to the narrowed front, and then to Kratos.

"If we force a side path through dead structure, can you break us an opening without bringing the whole junction down?"

Kratos eyed the chains at his wrists. "I can make a hole. I cannot promise it stays quiet."

Odin rested Gungnir against his shoulder, listening to the denser air for a moment. "Quiet is already gone. They know we are in this section. The only question left is whether we choose the contact point or let them choose it for us."

Athena turned to Zeus. "If we wait here, recovery teams finish the box and walk us into a capture line. If we push ahead into the narrowed fog, we likely hit the second hunter’s people first. If we break side structure, we may escape the box and walk into something worse. You need to pick one."

Zeus hated how small the board had become. For a moment he saw the old sky in his mind, wide and open, where retreat still meant something. That sky was gone. All they had left was fog and closing law.

"We break side structure," he said. "Short path through, then drop into whatever lane sits under this junction. No open stand. We hit, we pass, we keep moving."

Sun Wukong rolled his neck. "Finally."

They moved together toward a weaker section of old Continuum wall where the architecture looked poorly maintained. Kratos went first, chains already tightening. Poseidon and Athena on his flanks. The others held back just far enough to follow through the moment the hole opened.

Kratos struck hard.

The wall did not break clean, tearing instead. Density screamed through the gap as conflicting local laws tried to reassert themselves. Alarms that were not sound traveled outward through the junction. Any chance of remaining hidden died in that first hit.

"Through," Zeus ordered.

They forced the gap one after another, Wukong going wide on the far side, slamming a recovery scout back into the fog before the man could finish raising a signal. Athena’s spear took another through the shoulder and pinned him long enough for Hermes to strip a tracker charm from his armor and crush it. Poseidon cleared a third from their landing path with a short burst of force. Kratos kept the hole open until Hades and Odin cleared, then ripped free and let the torn wall collapse behind them.

It was not a clean fight. It was contact, hard and fast.

One recovery fighter locked onto Loki and nearly dragged him back toward the gap before Loki twisted, changed face for half a breath, and put a blade through the joint under the attacker’s arm. Sun Wukong took a hit across the ribs that would have dropped a lesser being and answered by breaking his opponent’s guard with the staff hard enough to send the body tumbling into the fog. Zeus met a denser operator near the exit lane and for a moment the chaos under his skin surged without permission. He crushed it back down and used raw strength instead, driving the operator into the floor plates hard enough to end the exchange.

"Move,"

he shouted.

They moved.

The lane under the junction was narrower than the map had suggested, already carrying secondary pressure from both sides. They ran it anyway, blood marking some of their steps. Breathing came harder. The short clash had bought exit from the box and the last of their soft cover doing it.

After a steep descent and two hard turns, Hermes finally raised a hand. "Immediate pursuit is scattered. Not gone. Scattered."

Poseidon leaned against the wall, spitting red. "Scattered is better than sealed."

Athena checked the group with quick eyes. "Wukong, ribs. Loki, arm. Zeus, you are burning hotter than before. Keep that under control or every tracker in range will read it."

Zeus nodded once and forced the restless power quieter again. He still did not fully understand why both hunters fixed on him so hard, only that they did. That fact alone made every open clash more expensive.

Hades wiped residual green light from his fingers, looking back up the lane. "They will reorganize fast. This was not a victory. It was a door fee."

"Yes," Zeus said. "And we paid it. Keep walking."

They pushed deeper into the lower route until the junction noise faded, for a short stretch only their own movement and the thick Continuum dark. It almost felt like distance again.

Then Odin stopped.

He did not raise his spear, only stood still and listened, one eye narrowed.

"What?" Zeus asked.

"Odin’s voice came low. "The small teams are no longer the only thing in range. Something heavier just settled over this section. Not a scout pattern. Not a wide net."

Loki’s expression flattened. "A real one, then."

Athena felt it a breath later, turning her head towards the denser dark ahead. "Yes. Whoever that is, they are not searching anymore. They are approaching."

Wukong tightened his grip on the staff. "Sera or the other one?"

"I cannot tell yet," said Odin. "Only that it is strong enough to stop hiding."

Zeus stood at the front of the nine, feeling the pressure settle closer, clean and deliberate. The long chase through fog and dead routes had bought them time. That time was ending.

Behind them, recovery lines would already be reforming around the broken junction. Ahead of them, something serious was coming into reach.

He looked at the others once, all battered and still standing, and set his stance on the narrow lane floor.

"Form up," Zeus said. "No more soft exits."

The heavier presence continued to close through the dark.

And this time, it was coming straight toward them.
