I Am Not A Goblin Slayer
Chapter 937 - 459: True Future Sight
"Thank you, Lord Red Dragon!"
Nira’s face was filled with excitement as she bowed deeply several times in the Red Dragon’s direction.
Her joy stemmed partly from receiving the precious meat and partly from the dragon’s willingness to give it to them. This showed that it was indeed quite benevolent.
It also meant her people most likely wouldn’t have to move.
They didn’t dare ask the Red Dragon for protection; they only prayed it wouldn’t slaughter them.
"I’ll be heading back then," Nira said, swallowing as she couldn’t wait to return.
"Hmph." Hephaestus caught a glimpse of the gratitude on her face and felt a bit pleased, but it still let out a cold, haughty snort.
Thanks to Gauss, its impression of humans had improved significantly; it no longer saw them as mere food. But humans were still just humans. It was a noble Giant Dragon, and it was meant to be superior.
Of course, its master, Gauss, and his companions were exceptions.
This was especially true for Gauss. Despite his human form, the Dragon Blood in his veins was even richer than its own, a true dragon’s. In its heart, it had long considered him a High-level Giant Dragon.
Still, watching Nira struggle and strain to haul the large piece of meat away, it felt an inexplicable, unspoken sense of joy.
...
In Gauss’s Spiritual World, his consciousness slowly began to awaken.
It was as if he had been in a very, very long sleep.
At first, he dreamed of his past life.
There, he continued the ordinary life he’d had before transmigrating. After graduating, he joined a large design firm, worked arduously for eight or nine years, and finally became a project manager.
Then came the down payment on a house, followed by blind dates, marriage, and children. In the blink of an eye, he was middle-aged, facing the threat of unemployment, then searching for a new job...
It wasn’t until his elderly self in the dream within a dream was breathing his last on his deathbed that he seemed to realize he was in a double-layered dream. He jolted awake in shock, only to find himself still in a dream.
*Phew—*
Having lived through an entire virtual life, he couldn’t help but break into a cold sweat in the first layer of the dream.
That life couldn’t be called a tragedy—he had been healthy and his family was happy—but compared to his life in this magnificent, turbulent world, it seemed far too monotonous.
Perhaps it was only after experiencing the contrast that this feeling became so profound.
If he had to choose, compared to the stable, urban Gauss, he would probably still prefer his current life, even if he wasn’t sure he could live to a ripe old age as he would have in his safe former world.
Unwittingly, he had already formed deep bonds with this world.
He had companions: Aaliyah, Serdur, and Ying... He had elders who had looked after him: the innkeeper Sofia, the Halfling Andri, the blacksmith Gron Bates...
He even had a dragon for a mount.
Searching his heart, he knew he truly preferred his life in this world, even with all its uncertainties.
The moment he solidified this thought, a drastic change seemed to occur in some intangible place.
His Spiritual World began to undergo a world-shaking transformation.
BOOM!!!
The many special existences within his mind began to collapse.
The Sea of Memories began to reshape itself, and even the stable Spell models started to tremble.
In a daze, Gauss had a feeling, as if his small sampan, adrift on a vast ocean, had finally cast its anchor.
His connections to the world, to himself, and to his soul silently grew stronger on every level.
The truth was, even he hadn’t realized it before, but despite having been in this world for over two years, he had always felt a faint sense of detachment. He would occasionally think back to his past life, which had only just begun.
But now, in the dream within a dream, he had lived that ordinary life to its end.
The last trace of regret for his past life seemed to have vanished with the completion of the simulation, and the soul named Gauss had finally settled here.
In the unseen depths, a power surged from deep within his body, weaving his past, present, and future together.
This miraculous phenomenon even managed to reverse his loss of control to a certain extent.
In the real world, Hephaestus, who had been watching over Gauss out of sheer boredom, suddenly felt a profound and unfathomable power emanating from him.
Gauss still looked the same, and his body hadn’t moved, yet it was as if he existed in another dimension at the same time.
It couldn’t help but blink. For a moment, it seemed to see several versions of Gauss overlapping one another.
Each version of Gauss seemed to lead to a different future. One stood up and smiled at it, another remained seated, and yet another walked over to the cave wall to examine the surroundings.
But the next moment, as it focused its gaze, all the versions of Gauss merged back into one, leaving only the single body sitting steadily in place.
Hephaestus was dumbfounded.
It was the first time it had ever experienced something that hovered between illusion and reality.
This power was beyond its comprehension.
’Gauss is...’
Though it couldn’t fathom what was happening, it knew this was a critical moment for Gauss.
It scrambled to its feet and blocked the entrance with its body, preventing any of the humans from accidentally wandering in and disturbing Gauss at this crucial time.
Meanwhile, the changes in Gauss’s Spiritual World were far more intense than what was manifesting physically.
His cerebral cortex entered a state of unprecedented activity, as if every single cell was at work.
His Spiritual Power also began to strengthen rapidly.
That feeling Gauss had before was really happening. His Intelligence Attribute breaking through from 20 to 21 points was indeed a milestone achievement.
