Chapter 139: Chapter 139: Split The Drink Onto Her Dress
Jiang Yanna marched over, leading a small group of girls, including Jin Zexi and Wu Xiner, quickly surrounding Qiao Meixia’s table.
"Qiao Meixia, you must be absolutely thrilled now that you have returned to the wealthy Jiang Family, right?" One of the girls asked mockingly.
Qiao Meixia spared the girl a brief glance before casually taking another bite of her dessert.
"Just look at that..." Another girl sneered, pointing directly at Qiao Meixia’s plate. "She has probably never tasted high-end sweets like this in her whole life."
"Girls, please don’t say such mean things." Jiang Yanna chimed in with fake gentleness. "Sister Meixia has suffered so much out in the poor countryside. It is only natural that she wants to stuff herself with food."
"Hmph. Even after putting on expensive designer clothes, some people just can’t hide their low-class nature." Jin Zexi stated contemptuously.
Suddenly, one of the girls holding a full glass of juice pretended to trip over her own feet. The dark liquid splashed straight across the front of Qiao Meixia’s delicate dress.
The surrounding air went completely silent for a few tense seconds before Jiang Yanna put on a dramatic act.
"Sister Meixia, we are so, so sorry! My friend really did not mean to do it. It was an accident! Please don’t get mad at her! If you want to scold someone, just scold me instead!" Jiang Yanna cried out protectively, stepping in front of the culprit as if shielding her from danger.
Before Qiao Meixia could even open her mouth to respond, a sharp voice cut through the tense air as someone else approached. It was Jiang Fenfang, with Jiang Boqin following closely behind her.
Jiang Fenfang immediately zeroed in on the large, ugly stain ruining Qiao Meixia’s gown.
"What on earth is going on here?" Jiang Fenfang demanded sharply.
Jiang Boqin narrowed his eyes, sweeping a cold, discerning gaze across Jiang Yanna’s group of friends.
"Did one of you do this on purpose?" Jiang Boqin asked coldly.
"Fenfang, Brother Boqin, please don’t misunderstand! My friend really did not mean to spill her drink on Sister Meixia’s dress! It was purely an accident!" Jiang Yanna stammered anxiously, desperate to cover up their spiteful trick.
Jiang Fenfang looked at Jiang Yanna with a deeply suspicious expression.
"A pure accident?" Jiang Fenfang echoed, her tone dripping with disbelief.
"Yes," Jiang Yanna replied quickly. "She was holding her glass, but someone bumped into her from behind. That was why the drink accidentally spilt all over Sister Meixia."
Jiang Fenfang glanced past Jiang Yanna to the girl standing shrinkingly behind her. The girl immediately lowered her head, putting on a show of looking thoroughly nervous and remorseful.
"I am so sorry, Young Miss Qiao. I really, truly did not mean to do it." The girl murmured softly.
Jiang Fenfang frowned. She had been watching the room. The girl had been standing perfectly steady before she suddenly jerked her hand to hurl the liquid. And now, she was offering an apology in such a rehearsed, exaggerated tone that it sounded completely fake.
"Who bumped into you, then?" Jiang Fenfang cross-examined the girl directly.
The girl went instantly rigid. Her eyes darted nervously from right to left before she stammered out an answer.
"I... I don’t know. Someone bumped me hard from behind in the crowd, so I could not see who the person was." The girl claimed weakly.
"Are you absolutely certain that someone bumped into you from behind?" Jiang Fenfang pressed, refusing to let her off the hook.
"Fenfang, Brother Boqin, it was genuinely an accident. There is really no need to make such a big deal out of it. Right now, Sister Meixia needs to go change her dress. People will start staring at her if she stays like this." Jiang Yanna tried to interject, attempting to redirect everyone’s attention.
"I agree she needs to change, but this matter still ought to be made completely clear." Jiang Fenfang stated firmly.
"Sister Meixia, my friend really did not mean to ruin your dress. Please forgive her." Jiang Yanna pleaded, turning back toward Qiao Meixia with a sorrowful expression.
"Sister Meixia, are you okay?" Jiang Fenfang asked, stepping closer.
Qiao Meixia looked down at her attire. A large, dark stain had spread across the front of her gown. The liquid had thoroughly soaked into the delicate fabric, completely ruining the appearance of the dress. However, Qiao Meixia did not look the least bit angry. She simply stared down at the ruined fabric for a few calm seconds.
"I am fine." Qiao Meixia answered plainly.
"Your gown is completely ruined, yet you are standing there eating dessert like nothing happened." Jiang Fenfang remarked, astonished.
It was only then that the others finally realised Qiao Meixia hadn’t even set down her dessert plate. She had quietly continued savouring her pastry the entire time they were fiercely arguing over the incident.
"It is just a dress." Qiao Meixia added nonchalantly.
"But this is the custom dress that Grandma prepared specifically for you tonight." Jiang Fenfang pointed out.
"I can just wash it." Qiao Meixia shrugged lightly.
"You really are far too calm." Jiang Boqin almost let out a laugh at her reaction.
"Should I cry instead?" Qiao Meixia countered, glancing up at him.
"No, no! Please don’t. I definitely don’t think I could handle that." Jiang Boqin said, immediately covering his mouth to hide his grin.
"Brother Boqin, you are still cracking jokes at a time like this?" Jiang Fenfang rolled her eyes at him in exasperation.
"I am just trying to make her feel better!"
"You are clearly making fun of her!"
"I’m not!"
As the two siblings bickered back and forth, Qiao Meixia remained completely silent, chewing her dessert in peace.
