Chapter 2778: Story 2779: The Heart of the Nameless King
Ronan fell to his knees.
Red light erupted from his chest, spreading across the chamber like rivers of molten blood. Every stone beneath him trembled. The six golden eyes in the creature’s faceless head widened, and for the first time, the Nameless King stepped backward.
“No,” it whispered. “That heart was never meant to awaken.”
Ronan clawed at his chest.
Two heartbeats thundered inside him. One was his own. The other was older than the mountain, older than the First Kingdom, older than the first breath ever drawn.
Then a child’s voice echoed through his skull.
Brother.
Ronan froze.
The forgotten child stood within his mind, surrounded by endless darkness. His small body was becoming transparent, but his red eyes remained bright.
“Where are we?” Ronan asked.
“Inside the place where Mother hid me.”
“Can you come back?”
The boy smiled sadly. “I never left you.”
Outside, Lyra rushed toward Ronan, but an invisible force hurled her across the chamber. She struck a broken pillar and dropped to one knee, gasping.
“Ronan!”
He heard her voice as if she were calling from another world.
The Nameless King raised one hand. Black chains burst from the floor, wrapping around Ronan’s arms and throat.
“Your brothers were divided to weaken the Firstborn,” the King declared. “But she made one mistake. She placed the stolen heart inside the only vessel capable of remembering everything.”
The First Mother staggered forward.
“You promised his heart would remain asleep!”
“I promised nothing,” the King replied. “You mistook silence for mercy.”
The chains tightened.
Ronan’s eyes turned completely golden.
A shockwave exploded from his body, shattering the chains and throwing the Nameless King against the chamber wall. The creature struck stone, and its six eyes flickered like dying stars.
Elias appeared at the entrance, black energy swirling around his hands. Aren followed, silver chains forming protective barriers behind him. Darian stood between them, violet flames dancing around his fingers.
All three brothers stopped when they saw Ronan.
Elias lowered his hands.
“What has he become?”
“Something we were created to prevent,” Aren answered.
Darian stared at Ronan’s glowing chest. “No. Something they were afraid we might help him become.”
Ronan slowly rose.
His sword lifted from the floor without being touched. Red symbols crawled along its blade, changing into unfamiliar letters.
The forgotten child’s voice whispered inside him.
Remember our father.
Ronan gasped.
A memory opened.
A vast throne. A crown of living bone. A man with six golden eyes kneeling before a newborn child.
And a voice speaking from beyond creation.
You were not born to inherit my kingdom.
The Nameless King struggled upright.
“You were born,” it hissed, “to replace me.”
Behind Ronan, the First Mother began screaming. Golden cracks spread across her skin as something ancient stirred beneath her ribs.
Lyra forced herself to stand and reached for her bow.
“Ronan, whatever you see, don’t let it take you!”
He turned toward her.
For one precious moment, his golden eyes softened.
Then the chamber went silent.
Every dead king bowed.
Every brother fell to one knee.
Even the Nameless King lowered its head.
Ronan looked down at his sword and spoke in a voice that belonged to two souls.
“I remember.”
The mountain split above them.
Far beneath the First Kingdom, a colossal golden door opened by itself.
And something on the other side whispered:
“My heart has returned. Now bring me my name.”
