Chapter 2523: Story 2524: The Trial of the Soul

  • Next Chapter

Golden fire engulfed the Heart Forge.

The thirteen circles of light spun like radiant stars beneath the feet of those chosen by the Last Sentinel. Ancient runes drifted through the air, weaving together into glowing constellations that illuminated the vast chamber.

The Sentinel’s deep voice echoed once more.

"The Second Trial begins."

"The soul cannot hide from truth."

A wave of golden energy burst outward.

Victoria Kane felt the ground vanish beneath her.

She opened her eyes inside Blackstone Ridge.

At first glance, everything seemed normal.

The fortress walls still stood.

The banners of the Black Star fluttered proudly in the wind.

Cole Mercer, Lucas Reed, Dr. Evelyn Brooks, Father Gabriel Ward, Gideon Black, and Elias Crow were laughing together in the courtyard.

No one appeared wounded.

No enemy surrounded the fortress.

Victoria smiled in relief.

Then she noticed something strange.

No one acknowledged her presence.

She walked toward Cole.

"Cole?"

He continued speaking as though she did not exist.

Lucas passed directly through her.

Victoria stopped.

"This isn’t real."

A familiar voice answered from behind.

"It is the future your choices may create."

She turned.

The Last Sentinel stood beside the ancient chapel, though his armor now shone with gentle silver light instead of gold.

"This is the Trial of the Soul."

"You must witness the weight carried by every decision."

The peaceful sky suddenly darkened.

A terrible explosion echoed across the mountains.

The fortress walls collapsed into clouds of dust.

Screams replaced laughter.

Victoria watched helplessly as thousands of Abyss Walkers stormed through the broken gates.

Cole fought bravely until a massive Earth Breaker crushed the tower beneath him.

Lucas fired every arrow in his quiver before disappearing beneath a tide of undead.

Father Gabriel stood before frightened children inside the chapel, shielding them until darkness swallowed the room.

Dr. Evelyn desperately tried to save the wounded, but the field hospital burned around her.

Gideon Black stood alone at the fortress gate, holding back countless enemies until he vanished beneath the endless horde.

Finally, Victoria saw herself.

She stood atop the highest battlement, wearing the Crown of the Black Star.

The crown glowed brilliantly.

Yet every friend she had fought beside lay dead below.

Her victory had come too late.

Tears filled Victoria’s eyes.

"There had to be another way."

The Sentinel stepped beside her.

"There always is."

"But no leader escapes sacrifice."

Victoria fell to one knee.

"If saving the world costs everyone I love..."

"...then I have already failed."

The illusion froze.

The Sentinel studied her carefully.

"You mourn others before yourself."

"You accept responsibility without seeking glory."

"The soul remains unbroken."

Golden light surrounded Victoria.

"The Second Trial is complete."

Elsewhere, Roland Thorne entered his own trial.

He found himself standing before thirteen stone statues of the original Marshals.

One by one, the statues came to life.

Each offered him forgiveness.

Each welcomed him back into the Order.

All he had to do was kneel and surrender his ambition.

Roland laughed bitterly.

"I kneel before no one."

He raised both hands and unleashed waves of crimson power.

The statues shattered into countless fragments.

Golden light instantly faded from his circle.

The Sentinel’s voice thundered through the forge.

"Compassion rejected."

"Humility denied."

"The Second Trial has failed."

Roland staggered backward.

Dark cracks spread across his armor.

The crimson eye beneath his scar burned even brighter as the Hollow King’s corruption tightened its grip upon his soul.

Back inside the Heart Forge, Victoria slowly opened her eyes.

The golden circle beneath her feet disappeared.

Only one circle remained illuminated.

The Last Sentinel lifted his mighty war hammer toward the crystal pedestal.

"The bearer has endured desire."

"The bearer has endured truth."

He looked directly at Victoria.

"Only one trial remains."

"The Final Trial..."

"...will decide not only the fate of the Crown, but the fate of the world itself."

As his words echoed through the chamber, the Crown of the Black Star rose higher above its crystal pedestal, shining like a newborn sun.

At that same moment, far beneath Whispering Canyon, another golden chain imprisoning the Hollow King shattered with a deafening roar.

For the first time in centuries, one of his colossal hands broke free from its ancient bonds and reached toward the surface.

The end of the age had begun.
