Chapter 2522: Story 2523: The Trial of the Black Star

  • Next Chapter

The thirteen circles of golden light blazed across the crystal floor of the Heart Forge.

Each circle pulsed with ancient power, illuminating the faces of Victoria Kane, Roland Thorne, Gideon Black, Elias Crow, Father Gabriel Ward, Dr. Evelyn Brooks, and Lucas Reed. The Last Sentinel stood silently before the Crown of the Black Star, his immense war hammer resting upon the ground.

No one dared move.

The Guardian’s voice echoed through the chamber.

"The Trial has begun."

"It cannot be interrupted."

"It cannot be escaped."

The thirteen circles suddenly erupted into towering columns of golden fire.

Victoria instinctively raised the Marshal’s sword.

The flames surrounded her—but they did not burn.

Instead, the world around her dissolved.

The Heart Forge vanished.

Blackstone Ridge disappeared.

She found herself standing alone beneath a bright blue sky.

A peaceful frontier town stretched before her.

Children laughed in the streets.

Families worked together repairing homes.

Flowers bloomed beside wooden fences.

There were no zombies.

No war.

No Hollow King.

Victoria stared in confusion.

"This isn’t real."

A familiar voice answered behind her.

"It could be."

She turned.

Standing beside an old oak tree was a younger version of Gideon Black, wearing polished Marshal armor untouched by time.

"This is the first trial," he said.

"The Trial of Desire."

Victoria frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Gideon pointed toward the town.

"This is the life you could have lived."

"No endless battles."

"No sacrifice."

"No pain."

As he spoke, another figure appeared.

It was Victoria’s younger self, smiling as she rode a healthy Midnight through the peaceful streets.

Friends waved.

Children laughed.

Life was ordinary.

Life was safe.

For one brief moment, Victoria wished it were real.

Then she remembered Dusthaven.

The Whispering Canyon.

Every innocent life lost to the Hollow King.

She slowly shook her head.

"This peace belongs to a dream."

"My people are still suffering."

The peaceful town began fading into mist.

The younger Gideon smiled proudly.

"You have passed the first trial."

Golden light surrounded Victoria once again.

Meanwhile, in another circle of light, Roland Thorne stood inside a magnificent throne room built from black marble.

The Crown rested upon his head.

Thousands knelt before him.

Even the Hollow King stood in chains at his feet.

A mysterious voice whispered through the hall.

"Rule forever."

"End every war."

"Become humanity’s greatest king."

Roland smiled.

"I accept."

The instant he reached for the chained Hollow King, the prisoner’s eyes opened.

The chains dissolved into smoke.

The throne room transformed into ruins.

Every kneeling citizen became an undead servant.

The Crown upon Roland’s head blackened into twisted iron.

The Hollow King laughed.

"You desired power..."

"...and power desired you."

The illusion shattered.

Back inside the Heart Forge, Roland fell to one knee.

Blood trickled from his mouth.

The Last Sentinel looked upon him without anger.

"You have failed the First Trial."

Roland clenched his fists.

"No..."

"I reject your judgment!"

The Guardian remained silent.

Nearby, Lucas watched in amazement.

"The trials are different for everyone."

Dr. Evelyn nodded thoughtfully.

"They’re revealing who we truly are."

Outside the fortress, the golden beam rising from the Heart Forge grew brighter.

Across the battlefield, the Hollow Guard lowered their weapons.

Even the Abyss Walkers stood motionless, waiting for the outcome.

High above the storm clouds, another golden chain binding the Hollow King cracked under immense strain.

The ancient ruler stared toward the mountain with growing impatience.

"Hurry, Roland..."

"Claim the Crown."

"Or I shall claim you."

Back inside the forge, the thirteen circles flared once more.

The Last Sentinel raised his mighty hammer.

"The First Trial is complete."

"The Second Trial..."

"...shall test the strength of the soul."

The golden flames rose higher than ever, and the Heart Forge trembled as every survivor prepared to face the deepest truth hidden within their own hearts.
