"...KSHHH... KSHHH..."

Only static came from the communicator.

Liu Feng’s heart sank.

He knew this strange Dragon Abyss Airspace severely interfered with communications. Once out of visual range, this small device was basically useless.

He was trapped in this primeval jungle, completely alone.

Hearing the sounds of pursuit growing closer behind him, he gritted his teeth and could only press forward.

The dense jungle was filled with tough vines and knee-high shrubs, drastically slowing him down.

He remembered clearly from when he was high in the sky: as far as the eye could see, there was nothing but this endless jungle.

Despair began to creep into his heart.

Just as the massive fist of a Black Fierce Ape was about to slam into his back, a piercing shriek tore through the air from above.

VROOOM—!

Wang Rui, piloting his Ghost Fighter, skimmed past at an extremely low altitude, the High-Energy Machine Cannons under its wings spitting furious tongues of flame.

DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA!

A volley of powerful Spiritual Energy Bullets exploded among the pack of Black Fierce Apes chasing Liu Feng, sending dirt and rock fragments flying.

Several of the Black Fierce Apes at the front were torn to shreds on the spot, collapsing with agonized howls.

"Nice!" Liu Feng’s spirits lifted.

Wang Rui’s fighter pulled up immediately after the strafing run, not daring to linger near the edge of the Gravity zone.

"Liu Feng! Can you hear me?" Wang Rui’s voice came through the communicator again. It was still staticky, but much clearer.

"I hear you! Captain! Where are you?"

"We’re circling overhead! Don’t stop, keep running straight ahead!

There’s a clearing about a kilometer to your front left! Get there!"

Another teammate’s voice came through.

With a destination in mind, hope rekindled in Liu Feng.

He stopped looking back and summoned every last ounce of his strength, sprinting wildly in the direction his teammate had indicated.

Fueled by adrenaline, the kilometer passed in the blink of an eye.

A circular clearing several hundred meters in diameter appeared before him. Not a single blade of grass grew there; the ground was hard rock.

"I’m here!" Liu Feng shouted.

"Get your Wingsuit ready! Sprint!" Wang Rui commanded.

Without hesitation, Liu Feng began to accelerate along the edge of the clearing, picking up more and more speed.

Just as he was about to run out of the clearing, he slammed a button on his belt.

HISS—

A lightweight Wingsuit made of memory metal shot out from the tactical pack on his back, deploying instantly.

He leaped, using the momentum from his sprint to glide forward.

At almost the same moment, Wang Rui’s teammate sent his fighter into a steep dive from high above.

"Grab the rope ladder!"

A soft but extremely tough ladder dropped from the fighter’s belly.

Liu Feng adjusted his posture in mid-air, reached out with precision, and grabbed the end of the rope ladder in a death grip.

An immense pulling force yanked him skyward as the fighter ascended.

"Open the emergency recovery bay!"

On the fighter’s belly, a previously smooth Armor plate retracted inward, revealing a cramped space just large enough for one person.

Using the pulling force, Liu Feng scrambled inside with his hands and feet.

"I’m in!"

"Close the bay doors!"

The Armor plate sealed shut again, locking him securely inside the aircraft’s fuselage.

"Number Three is recovered! Captain Wang, let’s pull out!"

"Roger! Evacuate immediately!"

Meanwhile, Wang Rui, who had been harassing the pursuers with his Machine Cannons, immediately turned his jet around to rendezvous with his teammate.

The two Ghost Fighters dared not linger. They went full throttle and climbed vertically.

They shot up to an altitude of three thousand meters in one go, leveling out only when they were about to touch the thick, white layer of clouds.

Looking down, the primeval jungle below now resembled a carpet, and the terrifying giant apes were no longer visible.

"Return to Dragon’s Fang Island!"

Two silver streaks of light cut across the sky and soon broke through the barrier of mist that separated the two worlds.

The familiar blue sky reappeared, and in the distance, the silhouette of Dragon’s Fang Island was clearly visible.

When the two fighters landed on the tarmac, Ground Commander Liu Zhen and all the ground crew swarmed around them.

They stared at the unnatural bulge on the belly of one fighter, and the bloodstains and scratches on the other’s wings.

Everyone’s expression grew incredibly grim.

This was only the first reconnaissance mission.

And the price paid had already exceeded everyone’s expectations.

Liu Zhen hurried forward to greet Wang Rui as he emerged from the cockpit.

When he saw the other pilot, Liu Feng, being helped out of the recovery bay—pale-faced with a trickle of blood at the corner of his mouth—his own throat felt a little dry.

"Captain Wang, Liu Feng is... what about the other fighter?"

"It went down."

Wang Rui’s voice was hoarse, his face etched with exhaustion and lingering fear. "We ran into big trouble."

"Quick! Follow me to the command room. Major General Ye and Advisor Han are both there!"

Liu Zhen didn’t dare ask more, immediately leading the two of them on a run toward the Command Tower.

When Wang Rui and Liu Feng walked into the top-floor conference room, all eyes turned to them.

Han Feng had just finished his report on the several tribes he had discovered.

Information about the Hermit Crab People, the Snake Lizard People, and the Spirit Fox Race, among others, had already been marked on the giant holographic sand table in the center of the room.

Ye Jinghong’s expression, already grim, darkened like a stormy sea when he saw Liu Feng’s battered state and the awful look on Wang Rui’s face.

"What happened?" he asked in a low voice.

"Reporting, Major General!" Wang Rui snapped to attention and saluted. "Our squad was ambushed by an extremely powerful Gravity Field. Liu Feng’s fighter lost control and crashed."

"A Gravity Field?" Ye Jinghong and everyone else in the room were stunned.

"Yes, sir. It appeared instantly. We estimate it was over twenty G’s."

A tremor still lingered in Wang Rui’s voice. "We were caught completely off guard. The pilot of number two and I barely managed to escape the Gravity Field’s range, but Liu Feng..."
