Chapter 2315: Cost Of Mastery.
They can’t help but feel cheated since they can’t even ascertain the quality of the product that they are buying. They don’t like being cheated at all.
But as if being cheated isn’t bad enough, it becomes worse once one of their slaves uses the memory fragments and the memory fragment disappears without a trace.
Once the memory fragment is used, it is gone forever. They will have to buy another one for their other slaves, which means they will have to be cheated again and again.
And in case the memory fragment is faulty, they can’t return it or use it as proof of being cheated. So once a memory fragment is used, they are stuck with it forever.
All of these difficulties made them determined to reach the legendary rank soon. Once they reach that stage, not only will they be able to determine the quality of a memory fragment without using it, but they will also be able to copy the memory fragments and sell them to recoup their loss.
But for now, they have work to do. Since they have found a way to give their slaves mastery of divine abilities, they can now prevent them from losing control when they try to advance to the epic rank with their second pathways. So they can resume their project now.
Each slave with the potential to have two pathways needs 50% mastery of the first three divine abilities of at least one pathway. That means they spent at least (200(rank 1) + 400(rank 2) + 800(rank 3)) × 8(50% mastery) gold coins on each slave.
Since they had 10 slaves to work on, they had to spend at least 11,200 × 10 gold coins in total. This made for a total of 112,000 gold coins that they had to spend for their project to succeed at all.
The mastery of the first three divine abilities of one pathway is just the minimum requirement to have two epic pathways, though. In order to maximize their chances of success, they decided to make their slaves master the first three divine abilities of their second pathway too.
They thought that since they were already spending 112,000 gold coins and had spent a lot of time looking for the shortcut, a lot of effort researching the shortcut, and many lives testing the shortcut, it was best that they do everything they could to maximize their chances of success so that they don’t lose what they had already invested in their slaves.
So they decided to spend twice as much money as they needed. This increased the cost to 224,000 gold coins.
This is just the cost for memory fragments. There is still the amount of money they spent on some divine flesh that they didn’t have.
There is also the cost of 113 lives that have been lost during various testing in order for them to achieve this. Even the 12 slaves that they eventually settled on and got to live have to pay a heavy price for surviving.
The price that their slaves paid for the success of the project was their sanity. They had to give up their sanity and become mad because of the numerous memory fragments that they used.
One memory fragment, no matter how small and harmless, can cause the split personality disorder or the dissociative identity disorder. But their slaves had to use 6 memory fragments, with each memory fragment containing a lot of memories.
If not for Legion’s support during the process of advancing, none of them would have been able to survive the process because of their mental insanity. They would have all lost control and mutated because even without the pressure of temptation and advancement, they were close to losing their minds.
Even after they survived the process, Legion had to continue to support their minds through their Puppet divine ability, or they would lose their minds and mutate instantly.
In conclusion, Legion spent a lot of time, effort, and money on the project. They are also still spending energy to keep their slaves intact after the project succeeded. Fortunately, all their efforts and investment weren’t a waste. They gained a lot from the project too.
The first thing they gained was 10 slaves with two pathways. They had slots for 12 slaves after they trained their Mark of Bondage divine ability to 50% mastery, but they only produced 10 slaves because they left one slot for Sir Kris and another slot for any other talented godclad that they come across in the future.
Producing just 10 slaves also reduced the amount of spiritual energy they have to spend constantly in order to keep their slaves intact. Each slave doesn’t cost them much spiritual energy. They spend like 1 unit of spiritual energy to maintain their minds every 1 hour.
They can regenerate that much spiritual energy on their own. They can also drink spiritual energy to replenish their spiritual energy. So the requirement of spiritual energy isn’t too much for Legion to bear.
But controlling each slave requires the focus of their souls too. This makes controlling their slaves hardwork for their mind and concentration, which is something they don’t want to spend much time dealing with.
All of their souls are usually busy either training or reading in the memory fragment. The stress from constantly controlling their slaves will hinder the other things that they have to do, so they decided to limit themselves to just 10 slaves.
These ten slaves were given numbers as names, instead of a type of hammer or toll. So the slaves were named from number 1 to number 10.
Legion found it easier that way to keep track of them, and because their slaves themselves don’t know their names with utmost certainty.
Since their slaves didn’t know who they were, Legion decided to keep things simple for them by giving them numbers as names. It was better this way, as calling Number 1 Golden Hammer tended to create rifts in his mind, which increased the amount of spiritual energy they needed to keep him from going insane.
