Chapter 2309: Extortion.
Since the war began, the nobles of Reinfield City have been earning a lot through the importation of weapons and armor. They have also earned a lot from the importation of food and the exportation of slaves.
As greedy as they are, they are content with sitting back and reaping large heaps of profits without endangering their lives. So they were determined not to participate in the war at all costs.
Even though they didn’t want to fight the dukes, they still drew the line at participating directly in the war. They made it clear that they were more willing to fight the nobles and gang up on them than to fight the church of justice.
They threatened the other nobles, but it wasn’t a rash thing to do. After all, if they are going to die by fighting the church of justice, they would rather die fighting the nobles.
At the end of the day they have a higher chance of surviving a fight with the nobles since the nobles of Wessex don’t have a god of their own. So they were adamant about their decision and only willing to support the war with money, not with their lives.
It helped their negotiation and threat that the nobles of Reinfield weren’t weak. They also had the option of running away from Wessex since their territory is at the border.
The dukes decided to accept their financial support for now. No one knew what they would decide in the future, and the outcome of the war had also become uncertain. This made the nobles in Reinfield and every other territory in Wessex tense up.
The nobles in Reinfield City were especially in a bad mood because of the coercion and extortion. Not only had their earned money been taken, but they were also made to look bad because they refused to lay their lives down for their kingdom.
Sir Kris in particular was in a bad mood. He was in a bad mood because his son had died and he had to pay a large sum of money to support someone else’s war.
He found out that his son had died when the telepath that set up the mind shield in Cedric’s mind determined that the mind shield had been destroyed. This meant that either someone was attacking Cedric’s mind or someone was attacking Cedric’s body and had successfully made his body fail in keeping him alive.
Both options were not good and were likely to lead to Cedric’s death because it was likely that whoever was attacking Cedric’s mind was doing so to kill him. Sir Kris could only hope for the slim chance that his son was fine.
Unfortunately, it was quickly confirmed that he was dead. The life token he kept in the family had dimmed, and a fate weaver had confirmed that he was dead.
The death of his son made him angry. Then the dukes of the kingdom came to extort him and the other nobles of Reinfield City. This made him angrier than he had ever been in his life.
Honestly, he wasn’t sure which of the two he hated the most. He isn’t sure what makes him angry the most between the death of his son or the extortion by the nobles of the kingdom of Wessex.
In both cases he has lost money. In Cedric’s case, he lost the investment he had made in his son, while in the case of the extortion, he lost his hard-earned money that he could have spent on methods to earn more money. So in both cases, he has a lot to be angry about.
While he isn’t sure which of the losses is the most important, he is sure that Cedric’s death is the only one he can do anything about, and he is sure that if he is to recoup his losses, he can only do so by investigating his son’s death and making his killer compensate him for his loss.
There was also the added motivation of his wife crying and demanding justice. She is blaming him for disowning their child and causing his death. She is being completely inconsolable about it.
He finds it ridiculous that she is blaming him for Cedric’s death, not Cedric himself for his stupid scheme. It was Cedric who brought this whole thing upon himself. If anything, Sir Kris believes that he saved Cedric from a public and gruesome death when he disowned him.
However, he may be right, but Cedric is dead, and there is no use blaming him for anything. Rather than waste time blaming Cedric, he would rather blame his son’s killer and make them pay. That is a better and more profitable use of his time.
With this conclusion made, he began investigating his son’s death. But he didn’t do it openly like he did when Celine died. After all, he had indeed disowned Cedric. So he couldn’t openly investigate Cedric’s death as if Cedric were still a part of his family.
He couldn’t even publicly mourn the death of his son and bury him with fanfare. This meant that even if he found the killer of his son, he couldn’t punish the killer publicly either.
If it became public that he investigated Cedric’s death and punished the killer, the punishment he meted out to Cedric for killing over 200 people will become a joke.
If that were to happen, he would anger the gangs and their leaders. That is not favorable since the nobles are planning to coerce the gangs to fight on their behalf in the war if the dukes come again in the future to pressure them.
He wanted a silent and careful investigation of his son’s death. So he didn’t employ many people to do the investigation. He only employed one person that he was sure would be able to find his son’s killer.
He employed a rank 4 fate weaver. Then he gave the fate weaver everything she needed, be it items that belonged to Cedric or information about him, such as his birthday and favorite things.
