Chapter 555
Adam’s heart sank.
Crap, now he knew why Vance had suddenly twisted the truth, the villagers had arrived.
The commotion caused the surrounding villagers to gather, their discussions rising and falling in succession, various expressions were outlined on their faces, but without exception, all were filled with anger and fear.
"Look, it’s that monster Zeon, he’s harming people again," a middle-aged woman shrieked, her voice sharp and ear-piercing, as if it could penetrate the night sky.
"I said long ago he was an ominous person, keeping him in the village is a disaster," a heavily bearded man roared furiously, brandishing his hoe.
"Such a good girl like Zella, how did she get targeted by him? What a sin," an old granny wiped her tears, voice full of sorrow and helplessness.
"Zeon, put Zella down immediately, or we won’t hold back," a few strong young men stepped forward, clenching their fists, eyes flashing with anger, ready to charge at any moment.
"Hmph, a monster is a monster, still having delusions of saving people with evil arts? How ridiculous," a mean-spirited woman sneered, eyes full of contempt and disgust for Adam.
"That evil qi inside him will eventually kill our whole village, we must drive him out," the villagers grew increasingly agitated, chiming in agreement, some started picking up rocks from the ground, preparing to throw them at Adam.
Adam held Zella tightly, feeling her life force gradually weakening, his heart felt as if it were being twisted by a knife, facing the villagers’ accusations, he did not have the slightest energy to defend himself, he knew that no matter what he said, he could not change their view of him.
"All of you... shut up," Adam finally could not hold back, he used all his strength to let out a roar, although his voice was hoarse, it carried an unquestionable power that instantly silenced the clamoring villagers.
"I know you are afraid of me, but please believe me, I have never thought of hurting anyone," Adam’s eyes were full of pleading and helplessness, "Zella is innocent, I cannot just watch her die."
However, the villagers were not swayed by his words, in their eyes, Adam was already an incurable monster, any action of his would only bring more disasters.
"A monster is a monster, stop wasting words with him, hurry and drive him out," the villagers grew restless again, pressing forward, raising their rocks and clubs even higher.
Adam gritted his teeth tightly, heart filled with despair and unwillingness, he knew he had to choose, either abandon Zella and flee alone, or persist, even if it meant facing the siege of the entire village, but if he left, Zella would truly be beyond saving.
He did not argue, any words were pale and powerless right now, the only thing he could do was try his absolute best to save Zella’s life.
"Nobody move," he roared at the villagers, the evil qi on his body erupting, he could only use this power to intimidate them.
Sure enough, seeing the berserk Adam, they were truly frightened and temporarily stopped their commotion.
Adam then quickly laid Zella flat on the ground, his hands moved swiftly and accurately, applying needles to several key acupoints on her body, hoping to halt the spread of the toxin.
However, as time passed, Zella’s complexion not only failed to improve but turned even more purplish-black, her breathing became increasingly weak.
...
Adam’s forehead broke out in fine sweat, his heart sank to the bottom of the valley.
Zella’s aura finally dissipated slowly from those expectant eyes, her eyes closed forever, leaving Adam with only endless sorrow and despair, the surrounding air seemed to freeze, so heavy it made it hard to breathe.
"No... Zella..." Adam’s voice trembled, he could not believe what was before him, those eyes once full of vitality had now lost all their luster.
He knelt beside Zella, tightly gripping her gradually cooling hands, tears slid down silently, dripping into the dust.
Seeing this, the villagers’ anger was ignited once more.
"Look! He really is a murderer, he killed Zella," that mean-spirited woman pointed at Adam and shouted, voice brimming with hatred and vindictive pleasure.
"Kill him! Avenge Zella!" The villagers were blinded by hatred, they forgot that Adam had once been part of this village, they forgot the days spent together.
They only wanted to see him receive the punishment he deserved.
No one came to save him, he was like a lone boat abandoned in a storm, battered by merciless waves.
The villagers’ fury was like a torrential storm, drowning him instantly, they forgot reason and sympathy, leaving only blind hatred and fear of the monster.
"Beat him to death! Avenge Zella!" someone shouted first, immediately, rocks and wooden clubs rained down on Adam.
He tried to use his hands to protect his head, but such resistance seemed feeble before the enraged crowd, every strike brought intense pain, but his heart ached even more, for his own powerlessness, for Zella’s passing, for the coldness of these once-familiar villagers.
"Stop, listen to me," Adam shouted with great difficulty, his voice almost entirely drowned out by the clamor, he tried to explain, tried to make them believe he had no intention of hurting Zella, but everything seemed futile.
The villagers had been addled by hatred, they only wanted Adam punished to quell the anger in their hearts.
"Monster, what is there to say? Such a good girl like Zella died because of you," a young man glared, mercilessly swinging his wooden club at Adam.
Adam could not dodge in time and took a heavy blow, falling to the ground.
"You... how could you act like this?" He lay sprawled on the ground, looking up at those once-familiar faces with eyes full of disbelief and despair, he could not understand why these people had become so unreasonable, so cruel.
He had clearly helped them so much.
"A monster is a monster, still expecting us to show you mercy?" That mean-spirited woman sneered, she walked up and lightly nudged his face with the tip of her foot.
"Let me tell you, Zeon, you should have known your fate long ago, staying in the village was a disaster waiting to happen, today, we will carry out justice for heaven and eliminate you, you monster."
Adam felt an unprecedented sense of humiliation and frustration.
He had never thought he would end up in such a state.
He tried to stand up, but his body felt as if it were pinned down by a mountain, unable to move.
