  1. Those Friends Who Dreamed Together

Lin Ye released the mechanism securing the lifeboat, and the lifeboat dropped onto the surface of the sea.

The three of them descended along the cruise ship's gangway ladder onto the lifeboat. Lin Ye cut the connection between the lifeboat and the cruise ship, and the cruise ship quickly pulled away from the lifeboat.

Looking at the luxury cruise ship receding into the distance, Lin Ye suddenly noticed that the ship's appearance was a bit strange.

From afar, it did not seem to be a cruise ship at all, but rather a reflection on the surface of the sea.

Lin Ye looked up at the sky. An inverted luxury cruise ship traveling high above was moving away, and it quickly disappeared beyond the edge of his field of vision.

Before the cruise ship completely vanished, Lin Ye seemed to catch sight of some passengers standing inside the railings, gazing at them.

"Whew, good thing we ran fast. I feel like we almost couldn't make it back."

Scarlatti had also seen the luxury cruise ship in the sky, and she knew that thing was extremely dangerous.

"Don't relax. We still need to figure out how to deal with the virus, and this place isn't exactly safe either."

The lifeboat floated on the black sea surface. Lin Ye used the oars to control the lifeboat's direction, but black seawater surrounded them on all sides, and he had no idea which way to go.

This was different from the architectural structures that followed certain patterns. There was no way to determine the correct direction.

In the end, there might not be a safe place here at all.

"...Do you still have those cookies? If not, we might just die here."

Scarlatti lay inside the lifeboat, twirling the pistol.

"Even if I do, I don't plan on eating anymore. I feel like if I keep eating them, I'll run into some very troublesome strips of paper."

Luck of this magnitude couldn't possibly come for free. Lin Ye rarely used the Lucky Coin precisely because he was afraid of running into something especially troublesome.

"Then I'll eat the next one. The two of us should be calculated separately, right?"

Scarlatti looked at the sky and said very casually.

"Forget it. If I eat it, there's still a chance I'll get a fortune cookie. If you eat it, there's no telling what strip of paper you'll run into."

Perhaps due to the system's influence, card items were still fairly kind to Lin Ye. But if card items were given to someone else to use, no one knew what would happen.

"Then what do we do? We can't just float here forever, right?"

Scarlatti blinked. She had spotted some strange things in the sky.

It was a stretch of ruins floating in the sky, with many monsters moving about inside the ruins.

"Don't worry. We probably won't last that long."

Lin Ye rocked the oars, steering the lifeboat in one direction so that at least they wouldn't be going in circles here.

"It looks like there's someone swimming in the water over there."

Little Guardian suddenly spoke up.

She still wasn't quite used to speaking with her mouth, so she said very little.

Lin Ye turned to look in that direction. There was indeed a man swimming in the sea, and the man was accelerating toward the lifeboat.

"There are still living people? That's way too fake."

Lin Ye swiftly swung the oars, moving the lifeboat in the opposite direction. He didn't believe a normal person could hold out this long and still swim alone in the seawater.

"Don't run! I have the information you need! I know how to leave this Dream World!"

The man shouted loudly, afraid they wouldn't hear him.

But Lin Ye didn't pause in the slightest. Instead, he rowed even faster.

"Other people can still enter this Dream World? Aren't you going to listen to what he has to say?"

Scarlatti aimed the gun at the man's head. She also found this man highly suspicious, but this was a good opportunity to gather information.

"As the main subject of the Dream World, even I don't know how to get out. How could he possibly know? Since he wants so badly to get close to us, that means he has a way to attack us, but he must close the distance to use it. So we need to keep a safe distance. Once he's dead, we can go collect the corpse."

Very few people could deceive Lin Ye, because he could guess what the other party was trying to do.

"Do you need me to give him a shot?"

Scarlatti wanted to hurry over and collect the corpse.

"We'd better not have any contact with him at all. That's the safer choice."

Lin Ye sped up his rowing.

"Since you don't dare come over, then I won't go over either. Goodbye!"

The man suddenly swam in the opposite direction.

Lin Ye continued rowing as if he had seen nothing. He didn't change his speed or direction, unhurriedly widening the distance between them and the man.

The man only lasted half a minute.

At first he was still accelerating away from the lifeboat, but after seeing that Lin Ye had absolutely no intention of chasing after him, he completely lost it.

"You damned coward! You don't even dare follow me?! I swear I'll kill you all!"

The man changed direction again, trying to catch up to the lifeboat.

He was already reaching his limit. If he wanted to survive, he had to catch up to Lin Ye.

"I know you're anxious, but don't be anxious just yet. After I finish my lunch, I can give you a chance to communicate from a distance."

Scarlatti swapped positions with Lin Ye, and Lin Ye took out some bread and bit into it.

"You're all dead for sure! There are still many people who have entered this Dream World. Until they all die, the Dream World won't end, and they will definitely find a way to kill you!"

The man watched the lifeboat gradually recede and unwillingly stopped moving.

"Damn, I was wondering why this nightmare still hadn't ended. So it's because people keep coming in to throw their lives away!"

Lin Ye chewed his cream bread, somewhat speechless. He had felt something was off before. They had already escaped to the surface of the sea, yet there was still no way out.

"So that's how it is. Those idiots are really unlucky."

Scarlatti revealed a gloating smile. She roughly understood what was going on.

"Aren't we the unlucky ones? Why would anyone want to enter a place like this?"

Lin Ye sighed and stuffed the bread into his mouth.

"Restarting the Civilization Tower is no small matter. Some people don't want the Civilization Tower to restart. Some people don't want another competitor. That's why these people came in to cause trouble. But they probably didn't expect to enter such a terrifying place.

I reckon you won't even need to lift a finger. They'll be just about dead on their own."

When a person encounters something unlucky, they feel absolutely miserable. But if many people are unlucky together, it doesn't feel so bad.

"...Restart the Civilization Tower?"

Although Lin Ye had vaguely guessed that there was something at the Civilization Tower that he needed to complete, he still didn't know what it was.

Now he finally knew.

"You actually didn't know? Then why did you come in?"

Scarlatti looked at Lin Ye with a face full of confusion.

"If you want ownership of this Dream World, you have to first pass the Civilization Tower's test."

That was why Lin Ye had come in. This was a Dream World created by the Civilization Tower. Even if it was a nightmare, it still had extremely high value.
