Global Survival: I Got the D-Rank Personnel Simulator
Chapter 898: Beyond the Base
- Beyond the Base
The corridor was extremely quiet, only the sound of their footsteps could be heard.
Lin Ye walked to the vicinity of the base exit, pulled the mechanical lever, and opened the base's large door.
Outside the door was a snowfield so white it reflected light painfully, with several frozen stiff corpses curled up near the exit.
The weather outside was nice, but the temperature was extremely low.
Just as Lin Ye was about to step out of the base, he sensed something unusual.
"...Did the ground just move?"
Lin Ye couldn't be certain either, the white light reflecting off the snowfield was nearly blinding him.
"I didn't see anything, but if you felt it move, then it probably did move."
Scarlatti pulled Lin Ye back a step, Little Guardian pulled the mechanical lever, and the base's large door slowly closed.
At that very moment, the snow outside suddenly surged into the base, completely blocking the entrance. And the snow didn't stop there, it kept pouring into the base corridor, like a surging tide of white.
The moment the snow started moving, Lin Ye grabbed Little Guardian and ran back, Scarlatti ran even faster than him.
"It's a dead end below! Where are we supposed to go?!"
Scarlatti shouted loudly while running.
The snow wasn't flooding into the base quickly, but it carried an unstoppable momentum, as if no matter where they fled, they would eventually be swallowed by the snow.
"...The garage! There should be spare snowmobiles there! If not, we'll have to use the snowboards!"
Lin Ye rounded the turn and charged toward where he thought the garage might be. He hadn't considered driving earlier because the situation outside was unclear, and driving would make too much noise.
But this was no longer the time to worry about noise.
The three of them sprinted through the corridor, the entire base shaking violently, as if it might completely collapse at any moment.
Perhaps due to the violent tremors, all the things hiding inside the base came running out. Fortunately, they had prepared plenty of weapons, otherwise it would have been very troublesome.
Lin Ye and Scarlatti took turns firing, continuously killing the monsters blocking their path. The gunfire was like a symphony that never stopped, echoing through the constantly shaking metal corridor.
All sorts of chaotic monsters were scurrying around in the corridor. Lin Ye led the way, weaving through one chaotic hallway after another, until he finally pushed open a metal door.
Inside was the garage they were looking for, several snowmobiles parked within.
"I'll go get the keys!"
Little Guardian ran toward the preparation room nearby.
Lin Ye and Scarlatti said nothing, one went to check the gasoline, the other went to prepare the snowboards.
That way, even if the snowmobiles failed, they wouldn't be stuck waiting to die in place.
Little Guardian tossed the keys to Lin Ye, who caught them and started up the snowmobile.
Scarlatti threw the snowboards into the back seat, then climbed into the co-driver's seat.
Little Guardian jumped into the back seat, Lin Ye floored the accelerator, and the vehicle charged toward the garage exit.
Scarlatti rolled down the car window and threw out a hammer. The hammer spun through the air and smashed into the mechanical lever beside the exit, opening the garage's large door.
The snowmobile burst straight out of the military base, racing at full speed across the snowfield. Only after the vehicle had traveled several hundred meters did the snow beneath them react.
The snow parted to both sides, trying to bury the snowmobile deep beneath the surface, but the snow didn't separate fast enough. By the time it split apart, the snowmobile had already blasted through.
In the rearview mirror, the base had completely collapsed, quickly swallowed beneath the deep snow. In just a few seconds, the area had become a flat, smooth snowfield.
"That looks like a cliff over there!"
Scarlatti squinted and shouted a warning.
"Then get ready!"
Lin Ye didn't slow down. After the base was buried by snow, the surroundings became eerily calm, and the snow beneath them stopped changing.
This wasn't true calm. Beneath the stillness, Lin Ye could feel an undercurrent stirring.
As the snowmobile was about to reach the cliff, a massive amount of snow suddenly rose from the ground, forming a small snow mountain. The snow cascaded downward, the mountain completely collapsed, triggering a small avalanche.
Lin Ye yanked the steering wheel hard, dodging the avalanche's frontal impact, but he didn't slow down, still driving straight toward the cliff!
The side of the snowmobile was struck by the avalanche's force, the vehicle shuddered violently, and was soon blasted away by the surging snow.
"Now!"
Lin Ye pushed open the car door, grabbed Little Guardian and the snowboards, and was flung out of the snowmobile.
Scarlatti was also thrown from the snowmobile with her snowboard. Before they even hit the ground, they had already secured their snowboards mid-air.
The snowmobile was swallowed by the snow. Lin Ye held onto Little Guardian and landed on the snow surface, using his momentum to blast off the edge of the cliff.
Scarlatti followed right behind him. Massive amounts of snow chased after them, but couldn't catch them mid-air.
Beyond the cliff was a pitch-black sea. They only rose for a short distance before gravity dragged them down into the icy, deep seawater.
Lin Ye barely managed to resurface. The island behind them had returned to calm, as if nothing had ever happened.
"I thought this place would be ice, I was already prepared to break a leg."
Scarlatti shed her excess coat, shivering uncontrollably from the freezing seawater.
This wasn't a good sign. If they didn't think of something fast, they'd freeze to death in the water within minutes.
"At least it's better than suffocating buried in the base... At least we get to choose how we die."
Lin Ye looked around. Surrounding them was an endless expanse of black seawater, with only the island behind them capable of getting them out of this situation.
Just as Lin Ye was about to use his last resort, a dark red metal box floated up in front of him.
On the lid was painted a dark red, steaming cookie that looked absolutely delicious.
"Big bro! I knew you were the most reliable one!"
Lin Ye was trembling with excitement. He grabbed the biscuit tin, and because his body wouldn't stop shaking, it took him several tries to open the lid.
Inside was only a single dark red cookie.
Lin Ye shoved the cookie into his mouth and chewed a few times. The cookie was absolutely delicious, spreading a hint of warmth through him. But that was all, the warmth quickly faded completely.
Then Lin Ye pulled a strip of paper from his mouth. Printed on the paper was a line of text:
This is a fortune cookie. Whoever eats it will be granted a period of good fortune.
"...Follow me."
Lin Ye grabbed Little Guardian, who was nearly frozen to death, and swam away from the island. Scarlatti struggled to keep up behind Lin Ye, no longer having the strength to speak.
They only swam a little over a hundred meters before they completely lost the ability to move.
Just as Lin Ye was about to lose consciousness, a massive cruise ship hundreds of meters tall appeared in the distance.
The giant cruise ship quickly approached them. A wave washed over, and all three lost consciousness at the same time.
