Global Lords: The Undead's Mobile Fortress
Chapter 326 171: War Begins Today (2)
"You've all seen the scouts' reports. There are tunnels underground. Even if the enemy doesn't use the weapon from last night to attack today, are you sure they won't use those tunnels to launch a sneak attack on us?" Palamede asked, speaking once more after everyone had fallen silent.
The generals and Clan Leaders present all lowered their heads. It was, indeed, a problem. The scouts had gone down to inspect the underground tunnels and found them quite spacious—more than wide enough for a contingent of troops to pass through. If the enemy could use the tunnels to cast Magic, they could just as easily use them to launch a sneak attack on their main camp.
"Grand Marshal, the enemy came from the tunnels last night. Those tunnels must lead to the Undead's lair. What if, instead of engaging them in a direct confrontation today, we send a squad through the tunnels to launch a sneak attack?" a Lizardman general suggested after some thought.
His suggestion made the others' eyes light up. They nodded one after another and looked at Palamede.
'That's a great idea! If they can use the tunnels against us, we can use them against the Undead. It makes perfect sense.'
"I've considered that, but since the enemy dug such wide tunnels, do you really think they haven't considered this possibility? The Undead are probably waiting for us to do just that. If we send our troops in, they'll just trap us," Palamede said with a sigh.
When the scouts discovered the tunnels and reported back to him, he had the same idea of using them. But after careful consideration, he had abandoned the idea.
The Lizardman general was rendered speechless. He had thought he'd come up with a brilliant move, but it turned out the Grand Marshal had already thought of it.
"Besides, the scouts who went into the tunnels reported that they branch out in all directions, like a maze. We might not even be able to find the path to the Undead's lair. We also don't know if there are traps inside. What do we do if our Warriors get lost in there?" Palamede raised another point.
The Lizardman general couldn't answer this question either. It had just been a sudden idea; he didn't know much about the situation in the tunnels, and everything he knew came from the scouts' reports.
"So, must we fight today?" a Headhunter Race Clan Leader asked, sounding unconvinced.
"We must fight! We have no better option!" Palamede declared firmly. He glanced at the others, saw the dissatisfaction still in their eyes, and knew he had to explain further.
"Fighting during the day is to our advantage, as the Undead are weaker in the daylight. Therefore, any battle against them must be fought during the day. If we don't attack today, we'll have to attack tomorrow. We certainly can't attack them tonight under the cover of darkness. The Undead are far stronger at night."
"Furthermore, not attacking presents several other problems. As we just discussed, we can't guarantee the Undead won't launch a sneak attack during the day, nor can we be sure they won't send troops from underground. And what do we do tonight if the enemy attacks with that weapon again, just like last night?"
"Can we defend against it? If we can't, are we supposed to just keep dragging this out?"
"And don't forget why we rushed here in the first place. Our food supplies are running low!"
"Right now, it's not the Undead who are desperate to fight us—it's us who are desperate to fight them!"
Palamede's expression grew more and more solemn as he spoke. They had been backed into a corner. If they didn't fight today and let the enemy harass them for a few more days, their food supplies would dwindle further, and the Warriors would truly lose the will to fight the Undead. By then, their morale would hit rock bottom, and starting a war would be impossible.
They had trekked over mountains and rivers to get here. If the Alliance Army disbanded without even a fight, it would be a huge joke. Forget any ambition of marching into the Central Zone; they'd be lucky if the other Races and Tribes didn't laugh them to death.
'No matter what, we have to fight the Undead today. Win or lose, we must fight!'
'We have to get the Warriors on edge, ignite their fighting spirit. Only then can they destroy the Undead.'
Palamede's speech was well-reasoned and evidence-based, leaving the many generals and Clan Leaders unable to refute him. But they really didn't want to launch an attack under these circumstances, so they lowered their heads and remained silent in protest.
"I agree with the Grand Marshal. We must fight the Undead today!" a young member of the Headhunter Race stood up and shouted.
Everyone else looked over in surprise, only to see a bald young man covered in tattoos, with a pair of fierce, double-pupiled eyes. It was one of the leaders of the Headhunter Race—Nado.
Palamede looked at Nado and raised an eyebrow, thinking to himself, 'Not bad, kid.'
He knew of Nado. After all, he was a promising young member of the Headhunter Race. Although not as renowned as Palamede had been in his youth, among the current generation of young Headhunters, Nado was a figure to be reckoned with.
Aside from a few of the old guard, few could keep Nado in check. The kid wasn't just arrogant; he had the strength and the brains to back it up. He had contributed significantly to this Alliance Army.
With Nado taking the lead, a group of young Headhunters immediately voiced their support, as they all looked to him for guidance.
Seeing more and more people voicing their agreement, the others could no longer pretend to be deaf and dumb in silent protest. They could only compromise reluctantly, as they had no grounds to object.
The motion passed in the meeting: Today, the Alliance Army would attack the Undead!
The news quickly spread from the conference hall, causing an uproar among the Warriors. 'We haven't even had a chance to rest, and now we have to attack? Do they even see us as people?'
