Chapter 446: Chapter 34: Super Gravity Slime Joins the Fray (Part 2)

Yuan Xiaobo paid no mind to the Pigmen who had charged to the base of the fortress, now in a blind spot for gunfire. He let them dig. Even if they managed to dig their way into the fortress, so what?

’This is a military fortress, filled with soldiers,’ he thought. ’Apparently, getting pummeled outside isn’t enough for them; now they want to rush inside to get swarmed by everyone?’

The sounds of gunfire and cannons from atop the fortress were incessant as the Human Race’s soldiers fired with all their might.

The Pigmen’s repeated charges had little effect against the Human Race’s dense barrage of gunfire.

Just then, a piercing cry echoed from the sky.

Accompanied by the sound of flapping wings, a flock of Eagle-men flew in from the distance, each carrying green bottles in their talons.

"Fire! Don’t let those Birdmen get any closer!!!"

The commander shouted nervously the moment he saw the Eagle-men appear.

These Eagle-men had only recently appeared on the battlefields between the Human Race and the Beastmen. Because the Human Race currently lacked significant air power, the Eagle-men’s advantage was glaring.

They could fly with impunity above the humans, clutching poison and curse bottles made by Beastman Priests in their talons.

These Eagle-men would fly over the Human Race’s defensive lines and drop the poison bottles, inflicting massive damage on the soldiers within.

Because the main military force was now equipped with firearms, it wasn’t considered cost-effective for specialized soldiers like Holy Knights and Priests to carry them. As a result, the front lines were mostly made up of regular soldiers armed with guns.

The Human Race’s regular soldiers had no way of dealing with the Beastmen’s poison and curse attacks.

As a result, wherever the Eagle-men appeared, the Human Race’s forces were usually routed.

The lords in the rear were already aware of the problem and were training elite troops, preparing to integrate them into the regular gun-wielding armies to handle unexpected situations.

However, distant water can’t quench a present thirst. There were very few elite troops on the current battlefield, which was why the commander was so tense at the sight of the Eagle-men.

But the regular firearms weren’t very effective against the Eagle-men in the sky. In fact, the focus on them allowed more of the Beastman ground troops to break through and reach the base of the fortress.

Yuan Xiaobo also saw the Eagle-men flying in from the distance and issued an order to his subordinates, who had been watching the show from the sidelines for a while.

"Everyone, switch your Spiritual Energy Guns to sniper mode! Aim for those Eagle-men! Fire at will!!"

In terms of functionality, the Spiritual Armaments were superior to the gunpowder guns of the ordinary lords. The ability to freely switch between sniper and automatic modes alone set them leagues apart.

This wasn’t just a simple switch between single-shot and automatic fire; it was the result of adjusting the Spirit Runes on the Spiritual Energy Gun.

Sniper mode allowed the shooter to aim more accurately and shoot farther with increased power. However, it also increased energy consumption; a single shot used as much energy as ten shots in automatic mode.

Under the sniper fire from the Spiritual Energy Guns, the distant Eagle-men began to fall from the sky.

Realizing the attack was far stronger than what they had faced at other fortresses, they scattered and flew higher, disappearing into the clouds.

Seeing that the gunfire from the Spiritual Armed Forces was effective, the regular troops breathed a sigh of relief and re-aimed at the charging Beastmen on the ground.

Meanwhile, the Spiritual Armed Forces kept watch on the skies, guarding against the Eagle-men’s return.

The battle continued. The Beastmen, unaffected by the failure of the Eagle-men, persisted in their charge against the fortress.

...

RUMBLE...

Suddenly, a massive explosion erupted from the base of the fortress.

Yuan Xiaobo, standing atop the fortress wall, felt the ground shake violently as the wall trembled fiercely from the blast.

He peered over the edge and saw several huge holes blown into the sturdy fortress wall.

Fortunately, the wall was well-built. Despite the holes blasted in its lower section, the upper structure didn’t collapse and remained stable.

The Pigmen at the base of the fortress cheered at the sight of the holes and charged into the fortress through them.

Seeing this, the Beastmen in the rear also cheered and launched an even more concentrated charge.

Yuan Xiaobo grabbed a frantic Messenger who was running up to report. "What happened down there?" he asked.

"Those Pigmen brought explosives! They blasted the fortress wall!"

Yuan Xiaobo sniffed the air. He didn’t smell the typical scent of gunpowder coming from below the wall, but a different, somewhat acrid odor. ’So they aren’t using standard explosives,’ he thought. ’It must be some other compound, something that acts like gunpowder.’

But regardless of what they were carrying, the Pigmen who had rushed into the fortress could not be ignored.

Yuan Xiaobo turned to a Super Gravity Slime beside him and said, "Xuanjia, have your Super Gravity Slimes go take care of it. Time for a warm-up!"

"No problem!"

After replying, Xuanjia’s body remained motionless. Instead, the Super Gravity Slimes resting inside the fortress stirred and flew toward the blasted-open holes.

Soon, the Super Gravity Slimes arrived before the several openings. At that moment, a large number of Pigmen were locked in brutal combat with the Human Race’s army.

The gun-wielding units, composed of regular soldiers, were at a clear disadvantage against the Pigmen, who held a significant physical advantage.

Now locked in close-quarters combat, the advantage of their firearms was nullified. The Human Race’s army could only fight the Pigmen with bayonets fixed to their guns.

It often took four to six men to hold their own against a single Pigman. Moreover, a single hit from a Pigman was enough to take a human soldier out of the fight.

Getting stabbed a few times, on the other hand, would only send a Pigman into a frenzy, making its attacks even more ferocious.
