Chapter 330: Chapter 13: Symbiote? (Part 2)
"But why him? Didn’t he warn us to be careful of the Eye Demon’s parasitic abilities?"
"So, what he said in the group chat back then was a lie to stop us from running experiments?"
Lin Yu mulled it over, unsure if he should praise Opal Hass. The lie Opal Hass had casually fabricated—that Eye Demons could parasitize and control living creatures—had been proven true. And yet, Opal Hass still thought he had everyone fooled and was secretly gloating.
’What a real genius!!!’
...
"What are you all doing here?" A beam of light shone from the other end of the mine tunnel as five heavily armed police officers finally reached the depths of the passageway.
"Officer, help! They attacked us!!" Li Xintong reacted the fastest. With tears welling in her eyes, she threw herself at the officers, grabbing the lead officer’s arm and shaking it frantically.
"Who?" A policewoman pulled Li Xintong aside and raised her gun, pointing it at the standing Lin Yu, Li Hua, and Vincent.
"Not them... *sob*... It was them." Li Xintong pointed at the bound members of the Extraordinary Team on the ground.
"Them...?" the policewoman hesitated.
"*Sob sob*... I was exploring in here and got lost. I was lucky enough to run into these Lizard-men, who were also exploring. They were kindly going to lead me out, but then these people showed up! As soon as they appeared, they started shooting at us! Kind Aunt Mei and the others... they were all shot and killed."
"If my brother and them hadn’t shown up and beaten them, I would have been killed for sure~~ WAAAH—"
As she reached the end of her story, Li Xintong’s acting turned into real tears. She recalled the ordeal of the past few days. Although she and her brother had grown up in poverty, she had never suffered like this, not to mention being hung up on a net.
"There, there, don’t cry. I’m here now. No one can hurt you anymore," the policewoman quickly comforted her.
"You three, tell us what happened here." While the policewoman comforted Li Xintong, the other officers stepped forward to assess the scene. With fatalities involved, this was clearly more than just a simple brawl.
Li Hua and Lin Yu each gave accounts similar to Li Xintong’s, and Vincent also went along with her story, providing a vague but plausible version of events.
Next came identity verification. Lin Yu and Li Hua, of course, had no issues, but Vincent was subjected to questioning.
"Why have you renewed your tourist visa so many times?"
"I have business here."
"What kind of business?"
"Import-export."
"If you’re doing business, what are you doing out here?"
"Just curious..."
...
Vincent was taken aside for further questioning. After all, he was highly suspicious, and with a ground littered with dead Lizard-men, it was shaping up to be a diplomatic incident. The police had to be cautious.
If they could find evidence of Vincent committing a crime, things would be different. The official story would be that he clashed with a local gang while engaging in illegal activities, resulting in a firefight with casualties, and the local gang had now been apprehended.
The review of Li Hua and Lin Yu concluded quickly. After all, Li Xintong and Li Hua lived nearby, so while exploring the mines wasn’t common, it was understandable.
As for Lin Yu, coming to help his friend after receiving a message also made sense. Besides, both of their travel records were verifiable and raised no suspicion.
Upon learning that Lin Yu and Li Hua were competing lords who had advanced to the third stage, the police officers’ attitudes became much more respectful.
"Excuse me, could you two untie him? We need to question him." A young police officer tried to undo the vine restraints on Conley, failed, and had to ask Lin Yu and Li Hua for help.
Lin Yu thought for a moment and said, "I think it’s best not to untie him!"
"Why not? If we don’t untie him, how can we take his statement? How are we supposed to determine the truth?" The young officer who spoke was clearly displeased. ’Even though Lin Yu and Li Hua are competing lords, I represent the Cuiwei Star Government. A lord can’t just casually interfere with my legitimate duties like this!’
"Some things are... not convenient to discuss right now. If you can get the chief of the Black Salt City Police Department, we can tell him."
The young officer’s eyes went wide. He never thought he’d be discriminated against because of his rank over a simple brawl. ’It’s just a few dead Lizard-men. What could possibly be so secret that I’m not allowed to know?’
Seeing the young officer’s defiant expression, Lin Yu raised the wristband on his arm. "As for this matter, I’ve already notified the Cuiwei Corps. They’ll be sending someone over shortly, so..."
The young police officer said no more. He lowered his head and walked over to the Lizard-men’s bodies, joining his colleagues in examining their wounds and securing evidence.
"What’s with you? You actually dared to talk back to a lord? Aren’t you usually more careful?" another officer beside him asked in a low voice.
"Didn’t you see?" he said quietly. "Those soldiers that are tied up are all from the Hass Clan."
"The Hass Clan? The rulers of Black Salt City?"
"Holy crap, they actually dared to capture soldiers from the Hass Clan?"
The two officers beside him gasped.
"Right? If we could rescue those soldiers from the Hass Clan, then in the future..."
"For them to do something like this, they must have some powerful backing. I’d advise you to stay out of it. Be careful you don’t stick your neck out for a reward and end up with nothing but trouble," an older officer warned.
"I know, I know, ’better safe than sorry,’ right? Old Ma, if it weren’t for that attitude, you’d have been promoted long ago. You wouldn’t still be out on patrol with us," the young officer said dismissively.
"Sigh..." The old officer let out a long sigh and said nothing more.
