Chapter 780 - 780: The Sorrow Of The Dead
“Grow stronger?” Captain Black sword felt his breathing growing deeper and heavier. The thought of facing the lord of the night as it was was already perplexing…
Facing a creature that is even stronger than its current level seems even more ridiculous.
He could only look at Wuhan; if the creature continues to grow stronger, only Wuhan will have enough power to deal with it.
Sylvheriel glanced at the formation and heaved a sigh of relief once she noticed it was still intact.
Yet the coldness in its eyes made her take a step back involuntarily.
Steeling herself with resolve and clenching her hands into a fist, she finally opened her mouth and spilled everything she knew about the creature.
“Lord of the Night stays in the shadows of the Elven Empire; it was something that the first-ever elven priestess sacrificed her dying body for during the First Night War against the fated enemies of the Elves and summoned. This creature was now bound to the Royal Family through blood…” As if hearing Sylheriel’s words, the towering figure raised its front legs like a horse and slammed them into the ground to express its dissatisfaction.
The hatred in its eyes blazed so much that everyone could sense it through the corporeal barrier itself.
The tangible fumes of the gray energy rose from the barrier and disappeared into the darkening sky. The stars were slowly becoming visible, making the lingering warmth of the day recede.
The Lord of the Night was clearly not a mindless creature of the forest that appeared out of nowhere, and the words of the Elven Princess shed light on the origins of the unknown creature that thought and showed emotions like a human.
Maybe it was even more intelligent than a human….
“The Lord of The Night had been with the royal family ever since, protecting them, but on the night…” Sylvheriel choked on her words, her eyes moistening with tears, threatening to fall down her eyes. She sniffled a deep breath and continued, “On the day we were attacked by the people whom you call the members of the Red Dawn cult, it was nowhere to be seen.”
She looked at the creature with confusion and even a little hatred while saying. “We could not understand it, but maybe it betrayed us, or maybe it now holds a grudge against us. But I have no idea why it is attacking us…”
Clang! Thud!!
Wuhan’s frown deepened; he glanced at the restless creature and then looked back at the woman with displeasure. The reason for his bad mood was not the past of the elves or why the creature was attacking them now, but it was because of Sylverhiel’s action, “Why are you wasting our time?”
“You wasted our time telling us something that tells us nothing about its capabilities. Tell me, what did you mean when you said that this creature could grow stronger?!”
With his cold demeanor, unlike the friendly one he shows to Noah, Wuhan spoke with the heavy authority of a king, making the elven woman tremble. His words were like the thunderous roar of a lion, shaking her to the core.
“That…” Sylvheriel staggered back with a pale look on her face, her throat dried in fear. She kept stammering, but Wuhan kept looking at her deeply. She glanced at the captain only to see him calmly looking at her as if waiting for her to speak.
She took several breaths to calm herself, clenching the hem of her robes tightly, fearing if she let it go she might stop breathing.
“The Lord of the Night has the blessing of the night. It is a creature who grows stronger in the night.” Her words stilled the air in the area. Wuhan’s eyes shot towards the dimming sky as the grave realization struck him like a Rank 9 Peak grade hammer.
From the way she spoke, the creature was in its weakened state, and once the night fully descended, the creature would grow stronger… How strong? He had no idea.
But if someone did, it had to be…
Wuhan glanced back at the green-haired priestess and motioned her to continue speaking.
And she did.
“The Creature is strongest at night, so much so that it can even reach the heights of a Royal warrior—I don’t know what your power system that level corresponds to exactly, but with each passing hour until midnight, the creature continues to grow stronger, and once the moon is at its peak, the creature becomes so strong that even Royal Father cannot contend with it.”
The more she spoke, the darker the look on the faces of the people present got.
Wuhan felt like he had lost all of his luck the moment he decided to set out on this journey.
But much to their dread, the princess was not yet done speaking.
“It was thousands of years ago that the Lord of the Night ever appeared before anyone. Only a few could have claimed to have seen it. Even for me this is the first time I saw it.”
Wuhan grimaced, noticing the woman spiraling into useless details once more, but the next words from her made him realize how wrong he was.
“It was gone for so long that the adults made stories about it from their past experience. My aunt told me about her encounter with it and told me, ‘The Lord is the creature of the lonely nights who swallows the sorrow of the dead and carves the moonlight to wield the power that surpasses what you or I could ever comprehend.'”
Once she was done speaking, Wuhan started pondering on the words she had spoken.
‘What did swallowing the sorrows of the dead mean? How could this creature wield the moonlight?’ The more he thought about it, the less he comprehended; everything felt to be right before his eyes yet so far away.
But before he could think more about anything, his thoughts were pierced by the screeching voice of the lord of the Night. He snapped his head towards it only to notice it howling towards the now darkened sky.
It raised the two front legs once more, arching its back once more, and slammed them in the ground once more.
Ever since the seven of his guards had laid the formation, only ten minutes had passed, meaning there were twenty more minutes before the formation gave way and released the beast.
Yet… with the darkness fully veiling the sky and the moon brightly shining in the sky, he knew the creature was not the same as it was moments ago.
Wuhan looked the Lord of the Night in the eyes and saw that its eyes, which were woven with threads of night, were no longer pure black. The darkness had been tainted by motes of night that looked like one lone star shining in each eye socket.
Another pair of leafy cicada wings fluttered out as the front hoof of the mighty being landed on the ground, shaking the forest and sending waves of the clouded mist in all directions.
Creak!
Boom!
