Chapter 778 - 778: The Lord of The Night

The night was drawing in; the bright sun had touched the horizon and was slowly sinking in the sea of monsters.

Deep in the twisted woods of the Elven Empire, a group of humans and an Elven runaway felt their hearts leaping to their chests. They were so tense that they had not even realized when their bodies had entered their fighting state.

Everyone only had a single question in their mind, though it was not the same for all of them.

The Emperor of the Feng Empire now stared at the… being that had attacked the elven priestess before, which now stood before them with a proud stride.

The first thing he noticed about the humanoid being as soon as it appeared in their sight was its lower body that resembled one of the horses but without the tail, yet its body remained covered in a sea of shimmering dark blue hair. Its skin was pale and dark; it matched the color of the dusky sky above.

The long ears on its human-like face matched the elven lineage, but its eyes—they looked terrifying. Dark as the abyss, as if someone had knitted them from the threads made out of the night sky.

Looking in those empty eyes, Wuhan felt a chill running down his spine. He barely noticed the bow made out of some broken branch that looked nothing like normal wood in its hands. There was no string attached to the bow, but the glowing arrow on the ground was a testament that it had the capability of firing an arrow anyway.

Yet another weird thing about this creature was its wings, as thin as cicada wings with a leaf-like shape and pattern. These wings shimmered with an ethereal light that made them appear illusionary, just like the being whose body seemed to be vague and unreal.

A faint light shimmered on the ground below, catching Wuhan’s eye. He turned his eyes a little, allowing himself to notice what he previously thought was the bone stick of the arrow, now turning into a swarm of glistening particles and disappearing into thin air.

“The Lord of the Night…” Sylvheriel cried out in panic the moment she registered the creature standing opposite them.

From the moment the arrow was fired at her to this very point, only less than three seconds had passed.

She had not even seen the blur of light flashing, and had it not been for the Captain Black Sword, she would have died from the attack. Beads of sweat formed on her head as she started panicking.

“What?” The lazy captain barely had any time to register her voice as the creature named the Lord of the Night raised its bow once more, pointing at the only woman in the group.

An arrow materialized out of thin air, forming from the base to the tip within a fraction of a second. It did not even need a string to keep the arrow straight and fired it almost instantly after it appeared.

“Be careful!” Wuhan, who sensed the power behind the attack far beyond the one the Lord of the Night had launched before, shouted in panic.

Woosh!

Captain reacted, heard the whistling of the air as the arrow closed the distance between them dangerously, but failed to keep up with its movements with his eyes.

But instead of panicking, he allowed his qi to leave his body and spread out while he took a defensive stance.

Almost as soon as he released the qi sense, the arrow was in front of him. Following the disturbance in the air, he channeled the qi through his blade and raised his blade straight up over his head.

“Selfless Art Style…” As the words slipped from his tongue, his sword shimmered with a dark, ominous glow, and his eyelids lowered ever so slightly from their already droopy position. Every part of his body seemed to have relaxed under his command as he followed up with his own charge. “Third Stance—Yin Yang Reversal.”

With an illusionary yin-yang symbol appearing beneath his body, his blade chopped down at a particular angle, deflecting the arrow an inch away from his face with a ‘clang.’

The arrow fell on the ground once more and disappeared.

Deflecting the attack had not been as easy as the captain made it appear to be; his hands were trembling from the aftermath, and he could feel a soreness in his arms.

‘What a hassle…’ Taking heavy breaths, the captain stared at the Lord of the Night, who refused to come closer to them and showed no changes in expression, seeing its attack fail twice.

“What is this creature?” Wuhan appeared beside the elf being targeted by the unknown creature and asked. “I have never seen anything like this, and why does it seem to have some kind of beef towards you?”

Sylvheriel jolted awake from her thoughts, hearing his voice suddenly popping beside her, and snapped her head in his direction before shaking it with a pale face. “I have no idea why it’s attacking me. It should not even be attacking me, but then why is it acting this way?”

While she spoke in a panicked tone, her words jumbling from the speed she said it all in, Captain Blacksword gathered his bearings and charged straight ahead with a sharp speed, faster than the first arrow that the lord of the night had released.

‘Does it have some sort of weakness at close range?’ He thought while raising the blade to the side, its tip pointing at the overgrown trees on the side. ‘Gotta test it.’

“Second Stance—Mindless Frenzy.” The words stretched with a chillingly calm tone; they reverberated in the air. The black blade in his hands seemed to have disappeared while the arms holding it flashed from all directions at once, with their aim being the unknown creature of the night.

Even when the streaks of black blades were merely an inch away from the Lord of the Night, Sylvheriel showed no sense of ease on her face. “The Lord of the Night is a being with a mysterious past. No one knows its origins, not even the elves… but it only had one task.”

Her eyes gleamed with a sense of despair and resignation as the hollow voice trembled out of her lips. “It is sworn to protect the royal family of the elves from any danger that might endanger them, and yet it’s attacking me… the royal princess.”
