Genetic Engineer in a Tamer's World

Chapter 140: The Gambit of Wills

The damp autumn mist clung to the stone arches of the fourth-floor corridor as Kale Ardentis walked back toward his laboratory.

The delivery of the Ignis-Salamander Hounds to Rando was complete, but the transaction’s residue still felt fresh. He kept his hood pulled low, his green hair tucked beneath his Master robes.

The sharp clank of boots suddenly shattered the quiet hum of the tower. Around the corner stepped High Inquisitor Luke, flanked by two paladins.

The air grew instantly cold, the oppressive pressure of the holy element filling the narrow, dimly lit hallway with a physical, biting chill.

Luke stopped a few paces away, his colourless eyes locking onto Kale with a quiet, predatory focus.

The golden sunburst medallion on his chest hummed with a faint, searching resonance. "A late night for a new Master, Ardentis," Luke noted, his raspy voice carrying a sharp edge.

"The audit of the Association’s registries is nearly complete, yet I find myself constantly drawn back to this tower. There is a strange, lingering dissonance in the air, a shadow that the light has yet to clear."

Kale offered a calm, respectful bow, his posture steady. Deep within his neck, the gold runic mesh of the subcutaneous seal hummed with a stable, self-sustaining cadence.

The earth mana of the Terra Shell and the fire mana of the Ignis Core worked in perfect harmony, filtering any trace of the World Dragon’s curse.

When the searching holy light of Luke’s senses brushed against his throat, it detected nothing but normal, earth-attributed cellular structure. "The craft demands long hours, Inquisitor," Kale replied flatly, his fingers resting lightly on the pommel of his daggers.

Luke stared at him for a long, silent moment, his pale face tight with frustration. He could feel the absolute stability of Kale’s mana pathways, a clean, unblemished signature that left no room for legal or spiritual intervention.

The permanent seal was absolute, shielding his secrets beneath a flawless biological mask. With a cold, dismissive snort, the Inquisitor turned on his heel. "Keep your head down, tamer," Luke warned. "A permanent seal protects your status, but it does not make you invisible."

Kale waited until the clank of boots died out completely before returning to his laboratory. The heavy steel door clicked shut, sealing out the cold mist of the corridor.

Inside, the warm hearth-light of the Ignis Core filled the spacious room with comforting warmth. Lazek was sitting in a wooden chair near the central workbench, puffing slowly on his curved smoking pipe, his pale face set in a thoughtful, clinical expression, his dark grey eyes reflecting the slow, quiet flicker of the embers.

"Luke is becoming desperate," Lazek said, blowing a ring of bitter tobacco smoke toward the ceiling. "The Prince’s override has locked him out of the official registries, but he is looking for any excuse to bypass the Association’s charter.

If you remain isolated in this tower, he will eventually find a loophole. Fortunately, a far more lucrative opportunity has just presented itself." He reached into his spatial storage and tossed a thick, silver-chased scroll onto the stone table.

Kale walked over, picking up the heavy parchment. "What is this?" he asked, unrolling the scroll to reveal elegant, flowing script. "The Grand Imperial Zenith Competition," Lazek explained. "It is a once-in-a-decade tournament held in the capital, open strictly to the younger generation under twenty across all five awakened pathways. Tamers, Elementals, Martials, Artificers, and Psions will all gather to compete. The high council and the imperial family are utilising this event to measure the potential of the capital’s rising stars."

Kale’s green eyes scanned the lines of the scroll, his analytical mind quickly cataloguing the parameters. "I am an Artificer and a Tamer," he noted flatly. "To enter such a public stage would only invite further scrutiny from the Church. What makes this worth the risk?"

Lazek smiled, a sharp, manic glint returning to his black eyes. "The grand prize, kid. The imperial treasury is offering a dormant, ancient-rank elemental core. It is a pristine catalyst of absolute purity. If you can secure that core, you will have the perfect foundation to jumpstart Neo’s next evolutionary stage."

The mention of an ancient-rank core sent a sharp jolt of excitement through Kale’s mind. His current Elemental Resonance Project required high-density, stable catalysts to act as external batteries for the Nemesis Hydra.

Feeding Neo raw, unrefined materials risked a genetic rejection cascade, but a pristine ancient core would bypass the metabolic bottlenecks. "I will enter under the Artificer pathway," Kale decided. "It will keep the Church from investigating my taming status while allowing me to utilise my Trinity Crafting skills."

"A wise choice," Lazek nodded, standing up to adjust his dark grey cloak. "But do not expect an easy victory. The capital’s noble houses have spent years training their heirs for this event, and they will use every resource at their disposal to secure the prize. Prepare yourself, kid."

The Grandmaster left the room, his silent steps fading into the night. Kale stood alone by the workbench, his fingers tracing the silver-chased scroll. The doomsday clock was gone, but the race for absolute power was only growing more demanding.

A soft, rhythmic vibration in the stone floor interrupted his thoughts. The protective runic arrays on the laboratory door did not flare with warning, but they hummed with a warm, familiar mana that made Kale’s eyes narrow.

The locking mechanism turned with a soft click, and the heavy iron door swung open. Princess Aria Sol Ignis stepped into the laboratory.

She wore flowing crimson silks. Her long, blazing red hair caught the light, and her yellow eyes watched him with a sharp, playful curiosity.

"A Master Artificer’s laboratory should carry the scent of rare herbs, yet I find only the bitter smell of my master’s tobacco," Aria murmured, her voice carrying a soft, melodic warmth as she stepped into the room.

She lowered her golden fan, her gaze tracing the lines of his broad shoulders and light green hair. As she drew closer, she let her passive Sol Ignis charm radiate fully, a warm, hypnotic pressure designed to melt a tamer’s mental fortitude and force them into absolute submission.

Deep within Kale’s mind space, his Mental Bastion trait rose like an impenetrable wall, filtering out the hypnotic stimulation of her charm. But this time, Kale had no intention of playing along by feigning affectation.

He was tired of hiding behind a mask of humble, trembling submission. He was a Master Artificer now, a Greater Master Tamer who had successfully circumvented the curse. The power dynamic between them needed to shift. Instead of lowering his eyes, Kale stood his ground, meeting her yellow gaze directly.

Aria stopped a pace away, her presence smelling of wild ginger and burning pine wood. A faint flicker of surprise crossed her yellow eyes as she realised her high-level charm was bouncing off his mental shield like waves against a stone cliff.

He was not trembling; his breathing remained slow and rhythmic, and his eyes held a clarity that defied her expectations. Before she could adjust her posture, Kale took a slow, deliberate step forward, crossing into her personal space, feeling the radiant heat of her mana.

"The Princess is remarkably bold to enter a man’s laboratory unannounced at such an hour," Kale said, his voice lowering into a calm, rich baritone that carried a subtle, dangerous confidence.

He did not back down; instead, he leaned down slightly, his face mere inches from hers. The sudden shift in his demeanour was dizzying. The quiet, respectful researcher had vanished, replaced by an unshakeable, predatory confidence. "If your guards report my every move, you should already know that I am far too busy for social visits."

Aria’s breath hitched, a genuine, furious blush creeping up her neck and painting her pale cheeks a soft rose. It was the first time in her life a man had dared to step into her space so boldly, completely unaffected by her royal charm and using his own presence to throw her off balance.

She tried to raise her golden fan to cover her face, but Kale’s hand moved with a disciplined, blinding speed, his fingers gently catching the edge of the fan to keep it lowered.

"A fan is a beautiful shield, Your Highness, but it is useless when the enemy is already behind your lines," Kale murmured, his green eyes shimmering with a cold, teasing amusement. "If you want my allegiance, you must do more than whisper empty promises from behind a gold screen. Show me the depth of your own pool, and perhaps I will consider joining your faction."

He slowly released his grip on her fan, stepping back to give her space, but his eyes maintained the heavy pressure of his attention.

Aria took a slow, deep breath, her heart pounding against her ribs in a way she had never experienced. The playful, mischievous persona she usually wore was completely shattered, leaving her genuinely flustered but deeply intrigued.

She looked at the green-haired young man, realising that the ’golden goose’ her brother Renard was boasting about was far more dangerous than anyone in the capital realised.

"You are a very dangerous man, Kale Ardentis," she whispered. "But I like a challenge. The Zenith Competition begins in six days. Win the ancient core, and perhaps I will show you the true depth of my pool." She turned and walked away, leaving the room quiet once more. Kale smiled darkly, picking up his carving knife.
