"You three will be having extra hours of service..." the officer said, his voice flat as he looked down at Malo, Bambi, and Faye.

All three of them looked like trash after the fighting. Dirt covered their clothes, their hair was a mess, and red marks were already swelling up on their skin.

"Why include me?" Malo snapped instantly, holding a hand up to his face. "They were the ones who started fighting... I am a victim here..."

The dude had only been trying to help Faye during the fight. He had jumped right in between the two girls, trying to pull them apart, only to catch two heavy blows right to the face. Now he was standing there on the curb with blood trickling down from his nose just for trying to help.

This was exact reason why Malo usually liked to stay away from violence. Whenever he saw danger popping up, he was either hiding behind a tree or completely MIA. But if the fight involved his best friend Faye, he had no choice but to throw himself into the middle of it.

Damn friendship.

The second officer stepped forward, scowling down at him. "Shut up. What is a boy doing in the middle of a girls’ fight? You couldn’t even stop it..."

"They were throwing heavy blows at each other!" Malo argued back, his voice cracking slightly as he wiped at his nose. "How do you expect me to stop a fight with iron fists...?"

The officer crossed his arms over his chest, his lip curling into a sneer. "

This is the reason why you havea very poor performance on your reports every summer camp. Are you not ashamed of yourself...? A wolf like you can’t pin down a Level 1 wolf. Such a weakling..."

During summer camping which is composury for students, all have rankings and Malo is just a level 5...

Faye’s chest heaved as she took a sharp step forward, her eyes narrowing at the man. "Hey, don’t insult my friend like that. He may not have strength for combat but he has intelligence and that is also a good thing.."

She glared at the uniform. Why was he even bringing up Malo’s performance right now? It had nothing to do with the current situation on the street.

The deputy turned his head, staring down at Faye with a cold, threatening look.

"Keep your tone down, lad. Just because you mingle with an Alpha doesn’t mean you have a voice here. Say one more word, and I promise you will be sleeping inside a cellar tonight, and your Alpha won’t be able to do a thing....."

Faye didn’t back up an inch. Instead, her eyes moved down to the shining metal pinned against his chest, reading his name tag and badge before looking right back into his eyes.

"Do you think I am scared of your empty words...?" Faye asked, her voice dripping with disgust.

"You are just a deputy, but outside the station you are nobody. No power to do anything... this fucking badge can’t do anything. You are just at the bottom of the food chain. I’m sure if I throw a dollar in your face, you will pick it up and turn the other way... cheapskate."

The officer’s face flushed dark red, his hand dropping straight down toward his belt.

"You are really testing my patience, girl... I will throw you in jail right now for those words..."

"I dare you then... Deputy.." Faye snapped back, stepping right into his space.

The air between them turned cold and tight. The tension grew thicker by the second, and standing right beside them, Malo knew exactly what was about to happen next.

It was either the deputy was going to get punched right in the jaw, or Faye was actually going to sleep in a cold jail cell tonight.

Before the officer could grab her arm, Malo quickly reached into his pocket. He pulled out a small wad of dollar notes, stepped between them, and shoved the money directly into the officer’s hand. He pressed the paper down and manually helped the deputy close his fingers around the cash.

"This will cover your break time and probably buy you lunch tomorrow..." Malo said smoothly, throwing the man a quick wink.

The officer looked down at the money in his hand. He took a short beat, gave a small cough, and pulled his uniform jacket straight again to clear his throat.

"You all better be here tomorrow for your community service..." he grunted.

Without saying another word, he turned on his heel and walked off back toward the patrol car. The officers left them.

Once the car pulled away, Malo turned around only to find Faye staring directly at him, her arms crossed tight over her chest.

Malo gave a small, sheepish shrug.

"This isn’t the first time I have given him money. At times, he comes knocking on our house door saying my father was found drunk on the streets, and I just pay him so he won’t throw him in jail.... Just like my role model, if you don’t have The Power, have the money to buy The Power."

A small, proud smile hit his lips as he said it. He was still holding onto that deep thought of wanting to end up just like Leo Kings one day.

Faye let out a soft breath, shaking her head. "So I was right..."

She couldn’t help but laugh a little under her breath. She had really just been randomly spouting insults off the top of her head to make the guy mad, but it turned out to be the exact truth.

A dry scoff from the sidewalk made them both turn around. Bambi was standing a few feet away..

Faye turned her full attention back over to her, her fists clenching back up at her sides.

"If you want to start another fight, I’m so ready for it... Either one of us will end up in a hospital tonight..."

Bambi let out a bitter laugh, shaking her head as she took a step toward them.

"You know I only wasted a gallon of gasoline, and I got fined 25k. That amount is something I will never earn in a lifetime... and you guys wasted a full tank, which is more than 20 gallons..."

Malo shifted his weight....

"Yeah, that is because we have more money than you will ever have..."

"And if you think it’s because I have pups with an Alpha, you are tripping," Faye added quickly, her voice sharp. "I earn my own money and I am my own Boss bitch..."

Bambi’s eyes flicked over to Faye, her lip twisting up into a harsh glare.

"You make your own money, and you are flashing it around. This is the exact thing you did to Butcher. You flashed your money to him, and he got himself in trouble with some loan shark. Now he is on the run, and we have to clean up his messes."

"That is not our fucking fault..." Faye snapped right back, pointing a finger straight at her face. "It’s your fault for following someone like him..."

"Following someone like him...?" Bambi repeated, her voice cracking as she suddenly swung her arm around, pointing her finger directly at Malo.

"I wouldn’t be in this situation if it wasn’t for Malone Griffin..."

Malo froze, his eyes widening as he raised his hands up defensively.

"Don’t blame me... I have told you countless times that I had no idea you were still chained up in the basement because I looked for you and the kids..."

"You did not!" Bambi yelled, her voice trembling with built-up anger as tears pricked at the corners of her eyes.

"Because if you did, then maybe my life would have been better than it is right now.... All I did was try to help you escape. I believed you when no one believed what you said about Butcher. I supported you and got myself chained and starved... and you ran away with her, forgetting me to burn in that fire...."

The air went quiet. Malo stood there, his mouth open as the words hit him hard. He wasn’t lying to her. He really had tried to find her back then, but he genuinely had zero idea she was still chained down in that basement when everything fell apart.

He took a slow step forward, opening his mouth to say something, anything to fix it. He wanted to ask her what had actually happened to her and the rest of the kids after Butcher went completely MIA and left them behind.

Before he could get a single word out, a sharp, loud ringing broke through the quiet street.

Bambi pulled her phone out from her pocket. She glanced down at the bright screen, her face going completely blank.

Without saying another word or waiting for Malo’s explanation, she turned on her heel and walked away down the sidewalk, leaving the two of them standing alone in the quiet.
