Chapter 311: Chapter 316: The Sensation Caused by the Birch Magic Breath Technique (Part 2)
Both Excellent-Quality Casting Gloves and Magic Wands started at 2,000 Black Tower Points.
What was more crucial was that even if you had the money, there was no guarantee you could find a place to buy them, as they rarely appeared through public channels.
But having accepted the sparring partner mission, Sahan steeled himself and raised his Magic Wand.
"Si—sa!"
The Curse echoed for the third time.
A Wind Blade shot straight out, then split in two mid-flight, carving two different arcs as they slashed toward their target from the left and right.
This was his specialty, a move he had spent a year meticulously developing. He hoped it would salvage some of his dignity.
However, the light in Sahan’s eyes flickered for only a moment before being completely extinguished.
The eternally calm young man across from him merely lifted his Magic Wand slightly.
Three points of distortion instantly appeared in the air, coalescing into three swirling Air Shields.
Two of the Air Shields flew forward, precisely intercepting the two Wind Blades.
The Air Shields warped slightly before returning to their original shape, showing no signs of cracking.
Sahan’s confidence was instantly crushed.
His Witchcraft Model was crushed, and his equipment was completely outclassed—he suddenly didn’t dare to look the young man in the eye.
「Twenty minutes later.」
The sparring session came to an end.
Mo Ning glanced at the sparring Apprentice, his face etched with frustration, and said apologetically, "Mr. Sahan, you were a very diligent partner. I will give you an excellent rating."
An excellent rating required an additional reward, typically 20% of the base pay, which amounted to 1 Black Tower Point.
’From Mo Ning’s perspective, although the Witchcraft Sahan had cast was average and not particularly impressive—failing to test the limits of his Air Shield—it had at least allowed his [Eye of Truth] to collect a large amount of data.’
’A mere 6 Black Tower Points was well worth the price.’
Sahan finally managed to force a smile. "Mr. Mo Ning, you are a truly generous person."
Mo Ning nodded to him, activated his Magic Ring to leave the sparring room, and his figure quickly vanished.
For safety, the sparring rooms were sealed areas with no physical exits to prevent anyone from being caught in the crossfire of Witchcraft practice. They could only be entered and exited using a Magic Ring.
Sahan stood rooted to the spot, letting out a silent sigh.
During this sparring mission, except for the first Casting, he had gone all out on the remaining nineteen, yet was never able to shake the young man’s Air Shield.
To this Apprentice, the young man was like an insurmountable mountain, filling him with an unprecedented sense of powerlessness.
’So this is how powerful a true genius is?’
———————
Sahan took a minute to compose himself, wiping the dejection from his face before finally leaving the sparring room.
He had deliberately delayed for a moment, the real reason being his reluctance to face the young man again.
It was a subtle psychological state—as a veteran First Level Apprentice, he had been mercilessly crushed by a newcomer. He truly needed some personal space to let his bleeding wounds slowly heal.
Soon, the sparring room began to blur.
A wave of dizziness washed over him and then quickly receded. The Second Plaza reappeared before Sahan’s eyes.
Countless Floating Jellyfish, radiating a hazy glow, drifted slowly above the plaza, creating a dazzling and romantic atmosphere.
The sight gave one the strange illusion of being in an underwater world.
The faint light from the jellyfish cast down, illuminating hundreds of uniquely shaped archways surrounding the plaza.
Each archway led to a different area.
The cluster of archways was proof of the incredibly complex spatial system built within the Black Tower Academy.
Sahan had only taken a few steps toward the plaza’s exit when he heard soft footsteps behind him.
He instinctively looked back and saw a familiar figure—another Apprentice who often hung around the mission hall, Mende.
After learning a new form of Witchcraft, as long as they weren’t too strapped for cash, Apprentices would almost always hire a professional sparring partner.
And for their fee, the sparring partners genuinely put in the work, usually offering many useful suggestions that helped Apprentices learn many times faster than they would on their own.
With several thousand resident Apprentices in Apprentice Town, the sparring area saw dozens, if not hundreds, of visitors daily. Running into an acquaintance was not at all unusual.
Some of the stronger sparring partners with excellent reputations could take on as many as six or seven missions a day, with top earners making up to 30 Black Tower Points.
For a First Level Apprentice, this was an enviably high income.
Not only was the money fast, but the work was also easy.
Like the sparring partners, almost all Apprentices had their own ways of making a living, and these methods collectively formed the rich ecosystem of Apprentice Town.
Mende greeted him. "You here on a sparring mission, too?"
Sahan wasn’t in the mood for small talk, so he just nodded. "Yeah."
Mende whistled, his tone a little smug. "I booked this gig yesterday. Pay was 4 Black Tower Points. How about you?"
About sixty percent of sparring missions only paid 3 Black Tower Points; by comparison, 4 was a good haul.
Sahan’s first impulse was to say, ’I just had a big client and got 5 Black Tower Points,’ just to make the other guy jealous.
But he swallowed the words just as they reached his lips.
After a moment’s hesitation, Sahan reported a much lower number. "My luck wasn’t as good as yours. I only made 3 Black Tower Points on this one."
’Because it suddenly occurred to him that Mo Ning seemed like someone who preferred to keep a low profile. If he went around broadcasting the high pay, wouldn’t it upset him?’
’If the client had just been an ordinary Apprentice, Sahan wouldn’t have cared at all.’
