Chapter 311: Chapter 182: Watching the Wind Rise
Upon entering the room, they saw Su Chen sitting leisurely on the sofa, sipping tea.
"Boss."
Chen Fei led the two team leaders to Su Chen’s side and addressed him respectfully.
"Mm," Su Chen nodded slightly. His gaze fell upon the two men behind Chen Fei. He even recognized one of them—the very captain who had stopped him on his first visit to the park.
He gestured for the three of them to sit. Su Chen had no interest in talking to people while craning his neck.
"Which of you will be staying behind in Shanghai? I trust Chen Fei has already briefed you," Su Chen asked.
"Boss, that would be me. Xue Yi, captain of the Fifth Reserve Squad. We’ve been fully briefed on the situation."
The sturdy man who had just taken a seat shot back to his feet, his expression solemn as he spoke.
Su Chen was momentarily taken aback by Xue Yi’s abruptness, but seeing his confident expression, he simply smiled and nodded.
"Chen Fei, where are the others?"
"Sir, the others are nearby. They came straight here after landing. The plan was to pick up the items and head right back to Zheng Island, so we didn’t bother with booking hotels," Chen Fei explained hurriedly.
Su Chen nodded, then turned his gaze to Pei Rang. "There. He’s all yours. You can handle the arrangements."
Then, he turned back to Xue Yi. "Pei Rang will be in charge of your compensation and benefits. Don’t worry... you’ll be well taken care of."
Xue Yi’s eyes flickered. Back on Zheng Island, he’d gotten an idea of the benefits package at the park, and it was a world away from any other job he could find. And that was before being entrusted with such a critical role.
Besides, the ladder of opportunity had been extended to him. Whether or not he could climb it was up to him alone.
Pei Rang knew Su Chen had important matters to discuss with Chen Fei, so he didn’t linger. He called over Xue Yi, and the two of them left, carrying two large bags of documents.
After seeing Pei Rang out, Su Chen called Chen Fei into the study. To his surprise, Chen Fei was carrying a small, black combination briefcase.
He asked and found out that Chen Fei, aware of the vast amount of classified information at the park and research institute, had gone through Xiao Chen’s channels to purchase some military-grade briefcases and safes. All told, he had spent over a hundred thousand yuan.
Su Chen couldn’t help but give Chen Fei a second look. ’This kid is getting sharper and sharper,’ he inwardly marveled. ’He’s really starting to own his role.’
He asked about Professor Chen’s current status, and the answer stunned him. Professor Chen had practically sealed off the lab. None of the research members were allowed out, and even Chen Fei and Xiao Peng could only inquire about the situation from the doorway.
Professor Chen had also requested Chen Fei arrange for round-the-clock patrols, the kind of security that ensures not even a fly can get out.
Hearing this, Su Chen fell silent. His fingers began to tap a steady rhythm on the table.
’Looks like Professor Chen is already running preliminary experiments, or maybe those experiments are already wrapping up. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have sent Chen Fei all this way just to get the rest of the data from me.’
After a moment of thought, Su Chen finally spoke. "Whatever Professor Chen needs, you do everything in your power to provide it. And report any developments to me immediately."
"Even if it’s at three or four in the morning."
Aside from the researchers themselves, Chen Fei was probably the only person in the entire park who knew what Professor Chen was working on. He naturally understood the weight of Su Chen’s words.
He immediately stood up and promised his full cooperation with Professor Chen’s work.
Since he had already been updated on the situation at the park and the research base over the phone, Su Chen didn’t have much more to discuss with Chen Fei.
Chen Fei knew what Su Chen intended to do once their conversation was over. Showing his astuteness, he rose, left the study, and thoughtfully closed the door behind him.
’The professional world really forges a person. Look how much he’s changed in such a short time,’ Su Chen mused.
He then retrieved the remaining data on controllable nuclear fusion from his system warehouse. It wasn’t a huge amount—just a single stack that filled about a third of the black briefcase.
After a moment’s thought, Su Chen pulled out another large stack of files, this one more than half the size of the first. It was the data for the ultra-high-end industrial machine tools he had acquired long ago.
He hadn’t expected Professor Wu and Professor Chen’s research to progress so quickly. This data would be of immediate use to them now.
He packed the briefcase until it was completely full, with not a sliver of space to spare.
After closing the briefcase and scrambling the combination, Su Chen called Chen Fei back in.
The reason Su Chen scrambled the combination was that Chen Fei had told him previously that Professor Chen himself had designed the lock. Other than Su Chen, Chen Fei was the only one who knew the code.
It was a measure to ensure the data’s absolute security. In short, better safe than sorry.
"Sir, if there’s nothing else, I’ll be on my way," Chen Fei said, briefcase in hand, asking for leave.
Su Chen gestured to the briefcase in Chen Fei’s hand. "There’s another set of technical data in there. Once you get back to Zheng Island, have Professor Chen pass it on to those two mechanical engineers."
Chen Fei nodded in understanding. Seeing that Su Chen had no further instructions, he turned and left the study.
Su Chen stood by the second-floor railing, watching as Chen Fei and the other captain opened the door and departed. He murmured to himself, "Now, all that’s left is to wait."
