From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals

Chapter 925 - 925: The Carrier Knows A Song, Not A Name

The man's burned fingers woke before the rest of him.

His right index tapped Kestra's floor twice. The first contact stung. The lower beat came through the second burn and pulled his throat tight around a sound he had already made somewhere else.

He caught the hand against his chest before it reached for a third tap.

One finger at a time, he opened the fist. The smallest obeyed. His ring finger shook but stayed clear of the stone. The middle burn pulled hardest, seeking a contact that was no longer there. He tucked that finger into the torn hem of his undershirt and kept it wrapped.

Jade sat beside him with a skeleton skull against her hip. Her coat was torn where the jaw had pulled through it. One living hand held a short finger bone, while the white hand rested open on her knee.

"You answered a sound from somewhere beyond this room. Did you choose it?"

The man moved his tongue along the back of his teeth. No blood. No wire. The old instinct checked anyway.

"I chose the first breath, and the second arrived before I stopped it."

Across the storehouse, five lock faces remained closed around a bare patch of floor. Sideways dirt clung to Kestra's measuring chain between two teeth.

Nessa had sealed the blue prison sliver inside her cutter handle. She kept her left thumb over the latch while her right arm hung against the rail.

"The third pitch stays inside until your mouth asks for it clearly."

He looked at the latch. During the wash rail rescue, that piece of metal had supplied the note the wall always kept for itself.

His hands remembered white contacts pressed against every fingertip. His mind offered only a room divided by plaster and six breathing patterns he had never seen.

The walls had been close enough for knees to touch them from either side. A drain crossed beneath every partition, carrying spit, wash water, and the ends of words the contacts punished before they became names. He remembered learning people by what their restraints did when the notes reached them.

"There were other prisoners behind the walls when they made me sing."

Dessel pushed himself higher on the lower shelf using his good arm. His left shoulder stayed against the board.

"Tell us what moved before this room asks your body instead."

The man pressed both palms against his thighs. Cloth felt better than stone. It gave the burns nothing firm enough to answer.

"The first note made somebody strike black chain two times."

Dessel's bound wrist scar pulled inward.

He turned his hand over. Four linked marks crossed the skin where Nessa had removed the restraint. The black Cross Link style lock near his shelf rotated one tooth without opening.

"I struck twice because the chain entered my thumb after every note."

The man's stomach cramped around water he no longer carried. Dessel had been on the other side of one wall. The shape of that fact landed harder than recognition would have. Faces could lie. A wounded thumb keeping the same count had less room for manners.

Tovan held the gray breathing cup beneath his chin. Ty's loose left hand remained under the base, four working fingers spread around it.

"What happened when your voice dropped into the lower pitch?"

The answer waited inside the man's ribs. He let air out without giving it tone.

"Someone counted five breaths and lost every sixth one."

Tovan's fingers stopped moving around the cup.

"I counted because six closed the tube around my throat."

The white collar beside him pulled tight by one notch. Ty's hand kept the cup level while Tovan worked through the next breath.

Jade moved her white thumb toward the tube and waited for Tovan to look at it.

"Use the borrowed hand only if your next breath shortens."

Tovan drew air, held it, and released the same amount.

"My breath remains mine, so keep that hand beside you."

The man watched both survivors settle after speaking. No one thanked him for bringing the room back. Good. Gratitude would have put a clean cloth over what the notes had done.

Kestra placed a shallow pan beneath the black lock.

"Anything that falls from my wall gets priced, wrapped, and witnessed before somebody important decides it was always theirs."

Ty's skull shifted against Jade's hip.

"Bill the prison once we find its pockets."

Kestra slid the pan one inch closer.

The man nearly laughed. His throat converted the start of it into the first pitch.

The black lock pulled at Dessel's scar. Tovan's tube remained still. The other four faces held their teeth shut.

Nessa lifted her thumb from the cutter latch without opening it.

"You can end here with two survivors confirmed and no debt owed."

He wanted to stop. His fingertips had begun to pulse against his trousers, ten small circles asking for the wall that made their pain useful.

He pulled the middle finger free of his shirt and held both hands toward Jade, palms up.

"If either palm reaches the stone, pin my wrists above the burns. I may beg you to continue afterward, and that will be the wall using my mouth."

Jade shifted the short phalanx into her coat pocket so both of her hands remained available.

"The first reach ends everything, and you will not have to argue against your own hands."

Then memory supplied another breath.

A woman behind the fourth partition had coughed whenever he missed the lower note. A child farther away counted in a language the handler kept correcting. Dessel's chain answered twice. Tovan reached five.

Behind all of them, one prisoner made no sound at all.

The handlers had cared most about that silence. When the man tried to say his own name across the partitions, every contact heated until the word broke apart behind his teeth. Relief came only after he returned to the song.

Name gone. Notes kept.

He rubbed his right thumb across the burn on his middle finger.

"Give me the third pitch once, then close the cutter before I ask again."

Nessa looked toward Jade rather than treating his request as the only permission required in the room.

Jade checked Tovan, Dessel, Ty's distributed bones, and the five closed faces.

"Everyone carrying a pull may stop this before the first tooth moves."

Dessel hooked his heel beneath Ty's pelvis. Tovan kept both hands on his cup. Jade pressed Ty's skull against her side. Kestra caught the three loose ribs with her numbered chain.

Nessa opened the cutter handle.

The blue sliver touched the hollow metal once.

The third pitch entered through the man's fingertips instead of his ears. His hands spread across his thighs. Each contact burn darkened around the edge, but no finger reached for the floor.

All five locks turned toward the empty center.

The black face beside Dessel opened one inward tooth.

The other faces stayed closed.

No name came through. No voice claimed the silent prisoner. The one open tooth released a strip of copper into Kestra's pan.

Seven cuts crossed one end. Black packing grease filled the cuts, mixed with pale stone dust and one thread from washed gray cloth.

The man saw the wooden mask again.

It had watched from the tuning room door while the handlers moved each surviving response onto separate rails. The mask carried seven cuts. Its owner pointed toward Dessel's partition after the black chain survived the third pitch.

"Send the black chain through Seventh's road before another tuning begins."

The remembered order left his mouth in the handler's flat voice.

Ty's right forearm pulled toward the black face. Todd's wooden stair showed between the tooth and Kestra's wall, no wider than a fingernail.

Nessa reached for the copper tally with her left hand.

The tooth started to open farther.

"Close it now because I have given the room enough."

Nessa snapped the cutter shut.

Jade drove her white thumb against the black tooth while Dessel kicked Ty's pelvis away from the center. Kestra pulled the ribs back by their chain.

The tooth closed on the washed thread and cut it free.

Todd's stair vanished. The copper tally remained in Kestra's pan.

Nessa turned the pan until the seven cuts faced the man without asking him to touch it.

"Does Seventh belong to a person, an office, or a road?"

He searched the part of memory that still held walls.

"I know the handlers feared that title, but they never gave me its owner."

Jade kept her white hand against the closed tooth.

"Then we preserve what you know and leave the missing name missing."

The man lowered both hands from his thighs. His fingers kept their own shape.

He swallowed and found no note waiting behind his teeth. His throat stayed his.
