Chapter 924 - 924: Dracula Refuses Erebos's Map

  • Next Chapter

Dracula's court asked for the map before it had finished dripping his daughter's blood.

It lay inside the receiving basin with Vick's thumb holding one corner in a memory that had already happened. Twelve roads shifted across the skin. Each entered a vampire border, crossed no gate anyone could name, and ended at the same prison square beyond the edge.

Archivist Maud set three blank copy sheets beside the basin.

"Two border stations vanished this season, and I need those roads copied."

Her left sleeve carried the stitched names of both stations. Maud had asked for more guards six times before the first loss. Dracula had approved them after the second, which made her demand inconvenient and fair.

He put one finger on the nearest blank sheet.

"Copy nothing until the map survives one honest border test."

The court factors behind Maud shifted in their tiered seats. They had come to decide whether Sanguina's blood use embarrassed the house. Erebos had handed them a larger argument and knew they would enjoy it.

Dracula touched the black seal at the basin's base.

His daughter's payment sat inside it. He could feel every private gate she had surrendered, twelve familiar absences bound around one stubborn choice. Sanguina had spent her freedom of movement to release a mortal who once took a club across the arm for her. She had repaid the debt late and spent enough to keep the court gossiping for a century. That much had her handwriting all over it.

"Close Red Orchard and seat the inner teeth against my authority."

Sorel moved from the court rail. He was Dracula's third son, older than Sanguina by enough years to remember four versions of her favorite insult. A ring of house keys rested against his wrist, each tooth cut from a border he had personally closed.

"Red Orchard currently carries six medical caravans and one royal kitchen."

"Hold them between markers and keep every patient under heat."

Sorel turned one key inside his palm. The red road on the map stopped at the edge of the basin.

Across the room, a gate frame built into the stone folded shut. Its iron teeth seated in pairs. The blood channel beneath it emptied into a glass cup, proving nothing living remained inside the crossing.

Maud leaned over her copy sheets.

"The road stopped, which makes the map accurate enough to preserve."

The road left the basin.

It ran through Dracula's finger, crossed the royal seal in Sanguina's payment, and appeared inside the closed frame. The iron teeth stayed seated. No alarm sounded because nothing had entered from outside.

Sorel dropped his key and caught it against his wrist chain.

"That route entered through our recognition of her blood."

Dracula lifted his finger. A red line remained beneath the nail and pulled toward the sealed gate.

"It entered through a living claim our border already accepted."

One of the court factors reached for the basin with a silver probe. Dracula turned his hand, and the probe bent around the man's fingers without touching skin.

"You may experiment after deciding which hand you can spare."

The factor withdrew. Maud stayed where she was.

"The offer still gives us every road they have built."

"It gives us the roads they want recognized as roads."

Dracula pressed Sanguina's seal once. The basin replayed the last contact written into her blood.

Vick's sword touched the first line.

The court clock lost a quarter second. Its long hand moved, stopped, and arrived late while every road on the map changed position. Red Orchard's line crossed from Dracula's nail to Maud's bottom copy sheet before ordinary time returned.

Ink spread across the page in the shape of the prison square.

Maud tore the sheet away from the others and held it by two corners.

"Then his blade is letting the prison move between our counts."

"His blade is teaching it how long our laws remain blind."

The seven cut broker had called Vick the warm part required to carry a blade. That insult had hidden the useful truth. Erebos needed a living hand whose power could delay the record without stopping the person attached to it.

Give Vick back, and the prison would learn the exact pause inside every border.

The senior factor rose from his chair.

"Trade the mortal, preserve the map, then recover him with force."

Maud looked at the station names sewn into her sleeve. She disliked the proposal. She wanted the map enough to consider it.

Dracula understood. Two stations held families who had trusted his gates. A ruler who rejected ugly tools too quickly usually expected someone poorer to absorb the damage.

He pulled the copied prison square toward himself.

"If we trade him, this court confirms that a person can remain carrier equipment after a blood claim freed him. Every border then learns Erebos's classification from us."

The factor kept his chin raised.

"We would recover one mortal after securing twelve strategic roads."

"You would recover whatever Erebos leaves after measuring our pursuit."

Dracula placed the copied square into the receiving basin. It tried to attach itself to Sanguina's seal. He pinned it with the silver object that had once blocked the Yami King's liquid inside the Demon King's throne room.

"Classify the map as a hostile instrument and the offer as refused."

Maud gathered the two untouched sheets. She left the marked one beneath Dracula's silver piece.

"My stations still need an answer before another border disappears."

"You will have Sorel's reserve crews before Red Orchard reopens."

That cost belonged to him. It stripped guards from three court roads and placed them under an archivist who had criticized him in writing. Maud gave a stiff nod and returned to her place.

Dracula opened Sanguina's claim hearing.

The easy choice waited in front of him. One royal correction could restore her gates, erase the exchange embarrassment, and turn Vick's freedom into a gift from the throne.

He left the correction untouched.

"My daughter's suspension remains until she answers the court herself."

Sorel studied him across the basin.

"She will assume you are punishing the rescue instead."

"She may arrive and argue that mistake in person."

Dracula drew a separate guest seal beside Vick's name. The blade, fourteen workers, unpaid hours, and original escort contract moved with it.

"Vick enters house protection as a guest with standing, never property."

Four silver claim threads withdrew from the basin. One belonged to the factor who had proposed the trade. The other three had been filed before Vick reached Ninth Tithe House, each requesting feeding rights over the route delay written into his blood.

Dracula laid those requests beside Maud's marked sheet.

"Guest standing gives him refusal over feeding, testing, travel, and service."

The senior factor touched the empty ring where his thread had been.

"Does the guest leave after Sanguina's hearing concludes against her?"

"He leaves whenever he chooses a road that will accept him freely."

The answer cost Dracula three useful houses before the ink dried. Their factors removed their voting rings and set them on the rail. Good. A border court willing to sell its vote for feeding access deserved the honesty of an empty seat.

The senior factor sat down before Dracula invited him to object.

Sorel's keys rang as he folded his arms.

"You intend to make me supervise Sanguina's next crossing."

"Your delight makes the appointment especially satisfying for everyone."

Sorel looked toward the ceiling and counted something private.

Dracula knew the habit. His son had started doing it after Sanguina burned his formal coat during a lesson and insisted the smoke improved the color.

"I will carry one lawful gate, and she will insult my pace."

"Vick chooses each destination, you record every crossing, and Sanguina compels neither of you. Keep all fourteen names attached."

"She will hate every word of those reasonable instructions."

"That should help her remember them under pressure."

Sorel lifted the house key and checked its teeth against his thumb.

"My reserve crews are already moving toward Maud's two missing stations."

"Then you understand why this assignment cannot become family cleanup."

"I understand Sanguina will run toward the first prisoner she recognizes. My job is keeping the road from swallowing everyone behind her."

Sorel took the travel case from beneath the court rail. Dracula placed one house key inside, followed by Maud's marked copy sheet and a three tined pitch key used to test blood gates for hidden passengers.

He sent his refusal through the line under his nail.

The carrier remains a guest. Your map remains evidence. My borders refuse your bargain.

Erebos's road pulled at the answer, found no accepted trade, and tore free of Dracula's hand. The cut under his nail closed.

No message went to Ty. Any contact with the contested skeleton would give the prison another living claim to travel through, and Dracula had no intention of teaching Erebos with someone else's body.

Sorel closed the travel case.

Inside it, the third tine moved without touching metal and produced two notes. A living throat somewhere beyond the court's shut gates answered with the same unfinished song.
