Chapter 686: HAIL THE SOVEREIGN!

  • Next Chapter

For three heartbeats, not a single breath was drawn in the entire square. The silence was absolute, thick, and suffocating.

Not a single warrior drew breath. Thousands of eyes stayed glued to the elevated platform, where the dirt at the edge of the timber dais was still humming from that single pulse of sovereign intent.

The Layer 2 veterans stayed pinned on one knee, knuckles pressed into the gravel, fighting the heavy instinct screaming through their spirit beasts to drop their foreheads all the way into the dirt.

Beside Sol, Kira let out a tiny, shuddering gasp. Her fingers trembling with an overwhelming, breathless awe.

Her mother... the woman who had carried the entire survival of the Veynar on her back while rivals plotted her downfall... was standing there like an unshakeable mountain that had outgrown the clouds.

Zeyra slowly exhaled, her knuckles white where she gripped her twin daggers, the only thing that could give her a sense of reality. Her calculating eyes took in every detail: the way the morning light seemed to bend around Veylara’s shoulders, the sheer, crushing mass of that fifth shell, and the absolute, dead quiet of the council.

"Fifth Layer..." Zeyra whispered, the words barely audible past her own dry lips. "She actually did it. The whole northern territory has become ours."

Down at the foot of the platform, Elder Bran was still trembling, his knees settled deep into the grit where he had collapsed. His withered hands clawed uselessly at the hem of his bear-fur robe.

"Fifth..." Bran croaked, his voice cracking like dry kindling as he looked up. "The ancient ceiling... the boundary... shattered? By the first root, we are no longer prey. The borders... the southern lords... none of them can cross the pass now. None of them."

He looked up at Veylara, his stubborn pride completely shattered, bowing his head so low his grey beard brushed the dust of the dais steps. The other council elders followed suit, falling into line with absolute, terrified deference.

Against a Layer 4 chieftain, an elder council could still squabble, cite ancient laws, and threaten to withhold supply lines.

Against a Layer 5 sovereign who could casually turn their entire hall into toothpicks with an offhand flex of her core, tribal politics ceased to exist.

Veylara looked down at bran.

There was no petty mockery in her gaze, no gloating over an old man who had spent moons second-guessing her every decision. Her sapphire eyes held only the cold, unreachable clarity of a predator that had stepped beyond the food chain entirely.

On the dais, Veylara raised her right hand.

The gesture was small, effortless, yet the deafening roar of thousands choked off instantly. The silence returned, taut and obedient.

Veylara’s sapphire eyes swept over the sea of bowed heads, drinking in the submission of her people with cold, regal poise. But as her gaze cut downward toward the base of the stairs, it locked onto Sol.

For a fraction of a second, the sovereign mask slipped. Her eyes softened, carrying a heavy, secret weight... an acknowledgment that the crown resting on her brow had been forged by the blood dripping from his knuckles and the unyielding stamina that had broken her under the willows.

"Rise," Veylara commanded, her voice rolling across the timber rooftops.

The clan rose as one, boots scraping against the hard-packed ground.

"Pick up your cane, Elder Bran," Veylara commanded, her voice ringing across the silent plaza like an iron bell. "The Veynar have knelt to hunger, to isolation, and to the threats of southern warlords for three hundred winters. We do not kneel in the dirt on the morning of our triumph."

The old man flinched as if struck by a flat blade. Color slowly rushed back into his pale, wrinkled cheeks. Swallowing hard, Bran reached out with a shaking hand, gripped the fallen oak staff, and pushed himself upright.

His old spine groaned, his joints popped, but he forced himself to stand straight, leaning heavily on the wood as he dipped his head in a deep, absolute bow.

"Warchief," Bran rasped, his voice steadying with grim, ferocious pride. "The council... bows to the sovereign."

That was the spark.

From the front ranks of the Lion Vanguard, Commander Thauren slammed his fist against his chestplate with a deafening CLANG!

"HAIL THE SOVEREIGN!" Thauren’s gravelly roar tore through the paralysis gripping the plaza.

"HAIL VEYLARA! HAIL THE VEYNAR!"

The roar caught like wildfire in dry brush.

Thousands of throats opened in unison, like a wall of deafening, blood-curdling thunder that rolled out from the square, over the timber palisades, and echoed off the ancient trees of the Great Orrath.

Spears beat against shields. Hunters threw their fists to the sky. Women and thralls wept openly, shouting the ancestral war cry until the dust lifted off the rooftops.

The ground beneath the square physically shook, vibrating to the rhythm of thousands of voices howling in raw, unrestrained bloodlust and hysterical triumph.

The terror that had gripped the camp since that world shaking phenomena last night... the fears of curses, dying lands, and vengeful spirits... was wiped away in an explosion of mad, primal euphoria. It hadn’t been an ancestral curse. It hadn’t been doom.

It was the birth of an apex predator that placed their clan above every living soul in the Northern or even whole of Orrath region. After all they hadn’t dared to place a foot outside of northern region, all in the fear of powerful enemies beyond that.

Remembering all the hardships they had to ignore, many of them couldn’t tear up. They... weren’t just survivors anymore. They weren’t a ragged clan barely fending off the Zharun or starving through the frost.

They were the people of the Fifth Layer. They held the only sovereign in the northern region.

Through the roaring sea of shouting warriors, Veylara remained still. She let the pride of her clan wash over the dais, her chin held high, the white-and-crimson tiger phantom hovering faintly behind her shoulders, soaking in the worship and will of her people.
