Chapter 1424: 1423 His gentle kiss fell
When Bai Yiyi heard Bai Yuqin’s words, “It’s her retribution,” a trace of sadness uncontrollably surged in her heart.
At first, when she learned that her mother had been involved in hurting Ranran and bore resentment toward Gu Kai’s mother, she couldn’t accept it either.
But Bai Yuqin was her mother, an unchosen family member.
Unlike Gu Kai, she couldn’t continue harboring resentment forever—she had to accept this reality.
The moment she truly forgave her mother was this past Spring Festival when she returned home. After not seeing her for some time, Bai Yiyi noticed her mother had aged significantly.
Not only that, but when they talked, her mother had become overly cautious. Each time it happened, Bai Yiyi felt a pang of sourness in her chest.
“Mom, when you’re about to arrive at the station, give me a call, and I’ll come pick you up.”
“Alright.”
Bai Yuqin no longer refused.
After hanging up, Bai Yiyi stood in the hallway lost in thought. She wanted her mother to stay, at least until her cold had completely healed, before letting her return to the countryside.
Should she arrange for her mother to stay in a hotel, or let her stay back in their old house?
If it were a hotel, her mom probably wouldn’t be willing to stay long.
From the master bedroom, Gu Kai’s phone began to ring. Though muffled by the room’s soundproofing, she could vaguely hear the loud ringtone.
Taking two steps forward, Bai Yiyi pushed the door open and walked in.
The ringing awakened Gu Kai. He had barely opened his eyes when he saw her enter. Smiling warmly, he tried to sit up to grab his phone but slumped back onto the bed instead.
“Yiyi, help me grab the phone,”
Gu Kai instructed matter-of-factly, while Bai Yiyi couldn’t help but twitch the corner of her mouth, glancing at him in mock annoyance, “Can’t you pick it up yourself?”
“I was woken up. I don’t want to answer it.”
Gu Kai frowned, his tone filled with irritation at being disturbed.
Smiling faintly, Bai Yiyi walked over to pick up the phone, but her smile faded upon seeing the caller ID.
“Who’s calling?”
Gu Kai had been watching her the entire time, without glancing at the phone.
Seeing her expression shift, he frowned slightly in confusion and asked.
Bai Yiyi’s eyes flickered, her voice calm, “It’s Fang Zhiwei. Take it yourself.”
Gu Kai hesitated for a moment before reaching out to take the phone.
Bai Yiyi turned to leave, but Gu Kai grabbed her wrist.
“Yiyi, you don’t need to avoid Fang Zhiwei’s calls.” Gu Kai placed the phone back on the bed and held onto Bai Yiyi’s wrist firmly, preventing her from leaving.
He knew that, like him, Bai Yiyi had unresolved feelings.
Fang Zhiwei was Bai Yiyi’s unresolved issue.
Bai Yiyi turned back to meet his strong, dark gaze and sighed lightly, “Hurry up and answer the phone. I won’t leave.”
Hearing her words, Gu Kai finally smiled in satisfaction. After gently gazing at her for a few seconds, and just as the call was about to end automatically, he pressed the answer button.
“Hello!”
Gu Kai’s deep voice came through, and his hand tightened slightly, pulling Bai Yiyi to sit on the edge of the bed.
Bai Yiyi’s eyes flickered; the moment Gu Kai propped himself up to sit, her heart skipped a beat inexplicably.
She attempted to free her hand, but his grip only tightened further, making escape impossible.
“Ah Kai, I’m at the airport now. Can you come pick me up?”
Fang Zhiwei’s voice, tinged with faint melancholy, carried over the phone, her mood seemingly bleak.
Gu Kai frowned slightly, pretending not to understand, “Why are you at the airport?”
“I just returned from out of town. Ah Kai, I feel terribly down all of a sudden. I’m waiting for you at the café inside the airport.”
Earlier, Fang Zhiwei had tentatively asked whether Gu Kai could come to pick her up.
This time, her words directly stated that she was waiting at the café, almost as if commanding him to go.
“Zhiwei, I’m really busy right now and can’t leave. Take a taxi home, or call and ask the driver to pick you up.”
Gu Kai’s tone wasn’t exactly cold, but anyone could hear that he was reluctant.
However, Fang Zhiwei seemed oblivious to his unwillingness, as her voice, now tinged with sadness, rang out again, “Ah Kai, I want to visit my dad. Come with me, okay? Besides, there’s something I need to tell you in person.”
Gu Kai’s phone wasn’t particularly far from Bai Yiyi’s ear, so even though it wasn’t on speaker, she still faintly heard Fang Zhiwei mention her father.
Her body froze slightly.
Gu Kai seemed to notice her subtle reaction as his grip on her hand tightened. His elegant eyebrows knitted together, “Let’s do it another day. I’m really busy today. You go home first. When I have time, I’ll call you. I’m hanging up now.”
With that, he didn’t give Fang Zhiwei any chance to respond and directly ended the call.
“You’re not going?”
Bai Yiyi looked at Gu Kai in surprise, noting his rejection of the call. Knowing Fang Zhiwei had depression, she questioned whether such refusal was appropriate.
Gu Kai pursed his lips, placed the phone on the nightstand, and leaned forward. He wrapped his arms around Bai Yiyi’s slender waist, his warm chest pressing against her back.
The warmth of his touch made Bai Yiyi shiver and freeze in place.
“Yiyi, that night, Fang Zhiwei threatened to jump off a building. I only went to her house with Ah Jin and the others because I was afraid she’d actually go through with it.”
Gu Kai slightly lowered his gaze, resting his chin on Bai Yiyi’s shoulder. His voice, when he spoke, was low, his lips lightly brushing against her ear. The scorching male warmth spilled into her ear like an electric current, triggering a tingling sensation throughout her body.
In an instant, a blush spread across Bai Yiyi’s ear, reaching her cheeks.
Her body turned stiff, unable to move.
Her heartbeat pounded like a drum, echoing in her ears, as if her heart could leap out at any moment.
Gu Kai seemed to enjoy her reaction. Sensing her body’s tension, his eyes deepened, “I just don’t want Fang Zhiwei to actually hurt herself, but I won’t indulge her unreasonably either.”
Their conversation wasn’t remotely ambiguous, yet Bai Yiyi found herself overwhelmed by the intimacy of Gu Kai’s embrace, rendering her mind unable to function properly.
“Fang Zhiwei just likes you too much. Honestly, she’s quite pitiful too.”
Bai Yiyi turned her head slightly, initially intending to avoid the warmth from Gu Kai’s breath near her ear. In her flustered state, she forgot that turning her head made them face-to-face.
Instead of diminishing the intimacy, it elevated it.
Not only did it fail to alleviate the suggestiveness, but it intensified it.
Gu Kai’s handsome features were impossibly close, their breaths intertwining. Bai Yiyi could clearly see his Adam’s apple bobbing.
In his Mo Yu-like deep eyes, an instant of passionate heat flared.
The kind of passion that was unfamiliar, yet strangely familiar to her.
Especially with his proximity, she couldn’t help but recall the lingering kiss in the car last night. Her breath hitched.
“Emotions can’t be forced. Just because she likes me doesn’t mean I have to like her.”
Before Bai Yiyi could turn her face away, Gu Kai’s elegantly long fingers gently touched her neck, effectively preventing her retreat.
His gaze locked onto her soft lips, and instinctively, he closed his eyes, his kiss falling gently upon them…
