Chapter 1413: 1412 will never
When Gao Yuwen said the last sentence, she suddenly stepped forward, leaned close to An Lin’s ear, and spoke in an extremely low voice.
After finishing her sentence, she turned around and walked away, her seven-inch heels clicking against the floor.
An Lin cursed softly, calling her inexplicable, but when she turned around, she saw Qin Mu standing a few steps behind her at the doorway.
Backlit like that, his expression was unclear. The darkness in his eyes, black as obsidian, seemed unfathomably deep. In a moment of realization, An Lin understood why Gao Yuwen had said those inexplicable words—she must have seen Qin Mu.
An Lin parted her lips, intending to explain, but Qin Mu gave her no opportunity. He spoke first, telling her to go home. He didn’t say a single word about Gao Yuwen, and twice when An Lin tried to explain, he deliberately changed the subject.
Eventually, An Lin didn’t bother to explain further.
After that night, Qin Mu didn’t show any emotional reaction. It was as if he hadn’t seen Gao Yuwen or heard their conversation.
However, An Lin knew better than anyone that Qin Mu had taken Gao Yuwen’s words to heart and had harbored doubts because of them.
After that night, he hadn’t touched her.
Just as An Lin’s fingers were about to press the button to hang up, the study door opened, and Qin Mu stepped out.
She looked up at him as her phone call ended automatically.
Qin Mu narrowed his eyes slightly, a fleeting emotion passing through them. To him, An Lin had hung up the phone because she saw him coming out.
“Why didn’t you answer the call?” Qin Mu asked indifferently as he exited the study.
An Lin shook her head and replied candidly, “It was Gao Yuwen calling. I didn’t want to answer her, so I didn’t.”
When he heard Gao Yuwen’s name, Qin Mu’s gaze shifted momentarily, an unusual emotion flashing across his face for a split second before reverting to calmness.
“Her father is asking for our father’s help. Even if she has grievances against you, she wouldn’t dare trouble you.”
“Ah Mu, that night, I really didn’t understand what Gao Yuwen meant by those words,” An Lin said stiffly, pressing her lips together as she tried to explain.
Qin Mu had never liked showing his emotions, especially since their marriage was his initiative. He had said before that he would take responsibility for her and try to learn to love her.
Thus, even if he had doubts, he didn’t show them, still treating her with gentleness and care as usual.
But An Lin felt that something was different.
These past few days, two little voices had been fighting in her mind—one wanted to explain herself to Qin Mu, while the other was proud and stubborn, feeling that since Qin Mu had married her, he should trust her.
If he didn’t trust her, then any explanation would be unnecessary.
She stared fixedly at Qin Mu, his handsome features cast in a pale glow under the light. When he heard her explanation, a flicker of emotion passed through his eyes. He lowered his gaze briefly before stepping toward her.
“It’s late. Go take a bath and sleep,” he said.
“Alright.”
An Lin’s lips curled slightly, but she said no more.
When Qin Mu passed in front of her, his gaze lingered on her for a moment before he walked out of the master bedroom.

G City
Gu Kai dialed Bai Yiyi’s number, but her phone was off.
He thought for a moment and sent her a message. A few minutes later, he called again, and this time the line connected.
“Hello!”
The phone rang for several seconds before Bai Yiyi picked up. Her voice sounded cool, as if tinged with the chill of the night.
Gu Kai instinctively furrowed his brow. “Why was your phone off just now?”
“It ran out of battery. I’m charging it now,” Bai Yiyi replied. Her tone was light, almost devoid of emotion.
“Did you see the post Fang Zhiwei shared on her Moments earlier?”
Gu Kai pushed open the door and went inside. He walked to the sofa and sank into it, his body weary as he tilted his head slightly, holding the phone pressed between his shoulder and ear.
“Yes, I saw it. The dumplings you made looked pretty good,” Bai Yiyi said blandly, as if unconcerned. Gu Kai, however, suddenly chuckled. “Bai Yiyi, are you jealous?”
“Sorry, I don’t like jealousy,” Bai Yiyi replied with a mock smile, her words devoid of even the slightest bitterness.
It was as if Gu Kai’s interactions with others didn’t affect her at all. One moment, Gu Kai had been smiling; the next, a suffocating heaviness settled in his chest.
Bai Yiyi had said just yesterday that as long as he didn’t get married, she would stay in G City and continue to be there for him.
And yet tonight, she seemed intent on distancing herself from him, her mood shifting as quickly as turning a page in a book.
“Fang Zhiwei wanted to jump off a building tonight. That’s why we went to her place—to spend New Year’s Eve with her. Since you saw the post, you should know it wasn’t just me. Ah Jin was there too.”
“You don’t need to explain, really.”
“Bai Yiyi, don’t forget what you said before,” Gu Kai snapped suddenly, his anger rising. In truth, his temper changed faster than the weather.
His mood was easily swayed by Bai Yiyi’s words.
Bai Yiyi understood the implication behind his comment. On the other end of the line, she sighed. Her voice, when it returned, carried a faint trace of sorrow. “I haven’t forgotten. As long as you don’t get married, I’ll stay in G City.”
Gu Kai’s grip on the phone tightened.
“Then why won’t you let me explain? Why did you turn off your phone? Was it because I went to Fang Zhiwei’s house tonight? I came back a long time ago.”
He didn’t know why he felt the need to explain himself.
He still hadn’t reconciled with Bai Yuqin’s actions and couldn’t bring himself to rekindle his relationship with Bai Yiyi. Yet he didn’t want her to misunderstand him because of anything.
These contradictory feelings frustrated Gu Kai immensely.
“I really wasn’t upset, Ah Kai. I only said that as long as you don’t get married, I won’t leave. I didn’t say you couldn’t date or get married. On the contrary, I wouldn’t stop you from dating or marrying any girl. Fang Zhiwei likes you so much—if you’re always with her, maybe things like tonight wouldn’t happen anymore.”
Bai Yiyi’s mood was inexplicably heavy tonight.
The worse she felt, the more prone she was to overthinking. And the more she thought, the more she felt that if she weren’t here, Gu Kai and Fang Zhiwei might truly be together.
Fang Zhiwei hadn’t always been like this. At least in the past, Bai Yiyi considered her a gracious and elegant lady.
It wasn’t until after Bai Yiyi and Gu Kai broke up that Fang Zhiwei seemed to have changed.
“Bai Yiyi, listen to me. I will never marry another woman, ever.”
Gu Kai finished his sentence and angrily hung up the phone.
He was furious.
His handsome face clouded with gloom. His heart was unbearably restless, and he knew Bai Yiyi still couldn’t let go of Fang Zhiwei’s father’s death.
But he hadn’t expected her to repeatedly push him toward Fang Zhiwei, as if she saw him as nothing more than an object.
He tossed his phone onto the sofa, pressed his lips together, and got up to grab his pajamas from the walk-in closet. As he headed for the bathroom to shower, he muttered angrily to himself that even if Bai Yiyi called to explain, he wouldn’t forgive her easily.
But reality proved otherwise.
When he finished his shower and picked up his phone, there were no missed calls. Not even a single message.
Staring at the screen, a fresh wave of anger surged through Gu Kai: heartless, soulless woman, her conscience must’ve been eaten by a dog.
