Chapter 1374: 1373 You can fall in love and get married.

Bai Yiyi slept until noon.

It was Tongtong who woke her up.

Opening her eyes, Bai Yiyi saw Tongtong holding strands of hair, trying hard to insert them into her nose but failing due to her clumsy technique.

Bai Yiyi was amused by her adorable antics. However, when she raised her head, she saw Gu Kai sitting on the sofa not far away. Her smile froze abruptly.

Gu Kai stood up, his long legs stepping to the bedside. “Awake?”

“Why are you here?”

Bai Yiyi’s gaze shifted slightly as she asked coldly.

Gu Kai’s lips curved in a faint smile as his eyes drifted to the strands of hair in Tongtong’s hand. “The surgery is over, and I’m back. I thought about it and decided—having you find another place isn’t the best idea.”

“Why?”

Bai Yiyi frowned. If he hadn’t coaxed her mother into renting out the house, would she have needed to rent one herself?

Thinking of this, Bai Yiyi lowered her gaze again. Her long lashes masked the fleeting sadness in her eyes.

Gu Kai squinted slightly, his gaze falling on her fingers clutching the quilt subconsciously. He bent down and picked up Tongtong. “Tongtong is used to living in the suburban villa, which is close to Ranran’s house. She can attend classes with Momo, Xin Xin, and Ziyi there and play together. Moving elsewhere would disrupt her routine and learning environment.”

Bai Yiyi was rendered speechless by Gu Kai’s reasoning.

If he were domineering and irrational, she could simply ignore him.

But what he said made sense.

Tongtong attending classes with Ziyi and the others wasn’t just a temporary arrangement. Bai Yiyi could make sacrifices for herself, but she would never let Tongtong suffer.

“Mom.”

Tongtong returned from Gu Kai’s embrace to the bed, her small hand grabbing Bai Yiyi’s hand as she softly called out.

Bai Yiyi smiled and asked, “Tongtong, what’s up?”

“Mommy, let’s go home.”

Bai Yiyi felt a pang of discomfort hearing Tongtong’s words, unsure if Gu Kai taught her this or if Tongtong said it on her own.

That place—she didn’t want to return.

She didn’t want to have any more tangles with Gu Kai. However, between her and Gu Kai, there was Tongtong—a bond that ensured they couldn’t sever ties for a lifetime.

“Go home to live. That’s Tongtong’s home, not mine. I’ve said before, you don’t need to feel like I’m keeping you or something.”

“Then I’ll pay you rent.”

Bai Yiyi got out of bed, grabbed her bag, and took out a card.

“I’ve already called Zhixing. I won’t revisit the matters from years ago. Your mom will be back this afternoon.”

Gu Kai referred to her as ‘your mom,’ not using the term ‘Aunt Bai.’

Hearing this, Bai Yiyi’s face changed significantly, her fingers clutching the card tightening involuntarily. Gu Kai noticed her expression and said, “She mentioned you don’t remember that day’s events, so there’s no need for you to feel guilty anymore.”

“Gu Kai, let me be clear. If my mom is fine, she’ll still live with me—no matter what she did before. She gave birth to me and raised me, and that’s an unchangeable fact. I’m back, so I won’t ignore her.”

“I understand. You can stay the same as before and live together. Just pay me rent.”

Gu Kai interrupted Bai Yiyi.

Seemingly worried she might not believe him, he pursed his lips and added, “From now on, I won’t interfere in your personal life—whether you date or get married.”

Bai Yiyi felt she should be happy about this.

Yet, her chest felt as though it were stabbed by a sharp weapon, the pain spreading acutely.

She bit her lower lip tightly and handed him the card. “The password is Tongtong’s birthday. The usual protocol. The money here is enough for five years’ rent.”

“I’ll take it.”

Gu Kai took the card and placed it in his cardholder. “After lunch, have Ranran accompany you to the police station.”

“No need—I’ll go myself.” Ever since she learned about the events of the past and her mother’s involvement, Bai Yuqin had become an awkward topic.

Whenever she was brought up, the atmosphere between Bai Yiyi and Gu Kai would become tense.

“Are you going back to work at Ah Jin’s place?” Seeing Tongtong slide down the side of the bed, Gu Kai reached out to support her, his gaze steady as it met Bai Yiyi’s.

A hint of hesitation flashed in Bai Yiyi’s eyes. When she left previously, it had been impulsive, initially thinking she wouldn’t return.

“No. I’ll look for another job.”

Bai Yiyi didn’t want any more entanglements with them. She preferred to keep her distance.

Even if Wen Ran and the others didn’t blame her, she knew she had to be self-aware. With the truth exposed, her mother couldn’t face Wen Ran and the others the way she used to.

She couldn’t choose her parents, but she could choose to maintain a distance to reduce awkwardness for everyone.

Gu Kai nodded and didn’t push her, “That’s fine. G City is large enough—finding a job won’t be hard.”

The sound of knocking came from the door. Tongtong, upon hearing it, immediately ran over and opened it. Wen Ran poked her head in and cheerfully called out, “Brother, Yiyi, it’s time to eat.”

“Okay.”

Gu Kai smiled at Wen Ran, then turned to Bai Yiyi. “I’ll take Tongtong downstairs first. You come down quickly.”

“Hmm.” Bai Yiyi responded softly. Gu Kai walked to the door carrying Tongtong, who crisply called “Mommy” one more time as they left the guest room.

Bai Yiyi stared at the closed door and pursed her lips gently.

She scolded herself inwardly, pressing her forehead firmly: Bai Yiyi, didn’t you promise yourself not to get involved with Gu Kai anymore? So why did you agree to move back?

Was it purely for Tongtong’s sake—or was there something she couldn’t let go?

She closed her eyes, forcing herself not to think about those messy things. With Tongtong in her life, no matter where she lived, Gu Kai would always be part of her world.

Unless she took Tongtong and left G City, preventing Gu Kai from seeing his daughter.

But she would never do that. After her parents had already hurt Gu Kai, how could she take Tongtong away and forever deprive him of seeing his child?

When Bai Yiyi went downstairs, Gu Kai, Wen Ran, and the four little kids were already seated at the dining table, waiting for her.

She greeted Ziyi, Xin Xin, and Momo with a smile. The three little ones responded sweetly, their voices competing to call out the loudest.

“Mommy, sit here.” Tongtong pointed to the spot beside her and motioned for Bai Yiyi to sit.

“Yiyi, did you sleep well?” Wen Ran asked with a warm smile.

Bai Yiyi returned the smile, “I slept well.”

“Let’s eat. Ranran cooked lunch today—all your favorite dishes. Eat lots.” Gu Kai’s expression softened, his voice gentle as he placed a piece of fish onto Bai Yiyi’s plate.

“I can serve myself.” Bai Yiyi’s body stiffened slightly as she pursed her lips and responded awkwardly.

“Mommy, eat more.”

Tongtong, seeing her dad serve food to her mom, immediately picked up a spoon and scooped some steamed egg to feed Bai Yiyi herself.
