Chapter 1366: 1365 is just sad

Chapter 1366: 1365 is just sad

Wen Ran and Gu Kai arrived at the cemetery. Before they even got out of the car, her phone started ringing.

She pulled out her phone, saw the caller ID, and a faint smile appeared on her lips. She pressed the answer button, “Hello, Brother.”

Gu Kai opened the car door and stepped out, turning to look toward the cemetery. The scene from that night, when he had brought Bai Yiyi to the cemetery, surfaced before his eyes again.

His chest felt like it was clogged with something, oppressive and unbearable.

In the car, Wen Ran heard Wen Jin’s voice through the phone, “Ranran, just now Zhixing called me and said that Bai Yuqin went to turn herself in. She confessed to being involved in what happened to you back then.”

Wen Ran was startled, and surprise flashed across her face. “Bai Yuqin turned herself in?”

“Yes, Zhixing just told me. I called you right after that. Why would Bai Yuqin suddenly go turn herself in? Has Ah Kai come back yet?”

Gu Kai and Mo Xiuchen had returned late last night. Wen Jin didn’t know they were back yet. Since Gu Kai’s phone had been off, Wen Jin called Ranran instead.

“They came back late last night. This morning, Bai Yuqin met with him. I understand now, Brother.”

“I’ve got things to do here, so I’ll hang up first. With Yiyi not here, I’m about to lose my mind from all this work.” Wen Jin complained briefly before hanging up.

Wen Ran put away her phone. Through the car window, she glanced at Gu Kai, who stood at the front of the car. She pressed her lips together and then opened the car door to get out.

“That was quick,” Gu Kai said, turning and giving Wen Ran a gentle smile.

Wen Ran nodded. “Let’s go.”

The siblings walked up to their mother’s grave. Wen Ran gazed at the gentle smile on the photo etched into the tombstone. For a mother she had no memories of, her feelings toward her were clearly less profound than Gu Kai’s.

Gu Kai placed a bouquet of flowers in front of the tombstone. When he straightened, he heard Wen Ran softly say, “Mom, just now I got a call from my brother. The woman who helped Fu Jingyi escape police capture back then—and watched him harm his daughter—has turned herself in.”

Gu Kai’s expression instantly changed. He turned to Wen Ran in shock.

Wen Ran met his incredulous gaze and smiled gently. “Brother, Bai Yuqin has turned herself in. She’s willing to pay for her mistakes. Maybe it’s because she doesn’t want you to continue holding onto resentment toward Yiyi.”

The emotions in Gu Kai’s eyes churned. His thin lips pressed tightly together, and he couldn’t utter a single word.

Wen Ran turned her head back, her gaze soft as it lingered on their mother’s tombstone. “Mom, my brother is very conflicted right now, so I brought him to see you.”

She crouched down, her voice tender and gentle, resonating through the quiet cemetery. “Dad used to tell me that when Brother was a child, he listened to you the most, Mom. You’d definitely want him to be happy, right?”

Gu Kai’s expression shifted multiple times. His tall frame seemed frozen as he stood there, watching Wen Ran talk to their mother.

Images of his mother’s words from years ago replayed in his mind, “Ah Kai, I don’t want you to work so hard, and I don’t expect you to be extraordinary. I just want you to grow up safe, happy, and live a good life.”

Because of his sister’s disappearance, Gu Kai had been particularly mature from a young age. He wanted to use his accomplishments to trade for their mother’s sense of comfort and smile.

As a child, he would juggle academics and studying medicine. Once, he locked himself in the lab for an entire day for a dissection experiment.

His mother, distressed, told him she didn’t want him to be the best—just that he would be safe and happy.

“Mom, let me give you some good news. Brother has someone he likes now. Not only that, but they also have a daughter named Tongtong…”

Gu Kai opened his mouth, wanting to tell his sister that he had brought Bai Yiyi here to see their mother. But his throat felt choked, as if something was lodged there.

“Mom, I hope Brother can be with the woman he loves. I also hope Tongtong can grow up in a happy home with a joyful childhood. Not like me, where I don’t even know what my parents looked like.”

“I hate Fu Jingyi and Bai Yuqin too. Not just because they hurt me, but also because they hurt my family. They made Dad, Mom, and Brother sad for so many years. They kept me from ever meeting Mom and left Brother unable to find happiness all these years.”

Gu Kai felt as though his chest was being tightly gripped. A pain beyond words spread from his heart through his entire body, pricking even the tiniest capillaries.

He pressed his lips tightly together, enduring the suffocating ache. Slowly, he crouched down and wrapped one long arm around Wen Ran’s shoulders. His voice rasped faintly as it escaped his lips, “Ranran, stop.”

Wen Ran looked up at him. Only then did Gu Kai notice the tears glistening in her eyes.

A sharp pang tugged at his heart.

“Silly sister, don’t cry.”

“I’m not crying, just feeling sad. Brother, you’ve punished yourself for so many years. Why can’t you let go of your hatred and live once for yourself? If not for yourself, could you please do it for Tongtong? I just asked Mom, and she doesn’t want you to live in hatred forever either.”

“Mom can’t speak.”

Gu Kai smiled bitterly.

“Mom can speak; it’s just that you didn’t hear her. I did. Mom said she hopes you’ll be happy.”

“Alright, I’ll call Bai Yiyi.”

Perhaps it was Wen Ran’s words that moved him, or perhaps Gu Kai’s heart had already softened after hearing Bai Yuqin’s confession.

Even so, he couldn’t yet treat her like he had before.

The turmoil in his heart lingered.

Wen Ran’s face broke into a smile. “Brother, you said this in front of Mom, so no takebacks.”

“No takebacks.”

Gu Kai patted her shoulder and turned to the figure on the tombstone. “Mom, you won’t blame me, will you?”

“Mom won’t blame you, of course.”

Wen Ran interrupted to reply, “When Yiyi comes back, we’ll bring her and Tongtong to see Mom. Mom will definitely like her—not for anything else, but because she’s the one you love.”

“Ranran, I already brought Bai Yiyi here.”

After standing up, Gu Kai said stiffly.

Wen Ran didn’t react immediately. She stared at Gu Kai’s slightly awkward expression with wide, surprised eyes for two seconds before smiling again. “Brother, there’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Since you brought Yiyi to see Mom, you should stop torturing yourself over old grudges.”

“Am I embarrassed?” Gu Kai frowned.

Wen Ran chuckled. “Alright, not embarrassed. But Brother, I remember you never brought Sister Wei to see Mom, did you?”

“Why bring her up again?” Gu Kai played dumb. After bowing to their mother’s tombstone, he pressed a hand on Wen Ran’s head to make her bow as well. Then he said, steering the topic away, “That’s enough. You got what you wanted. Let’s head back; otherwise, you can forget about eating the meal I cook for lunch.”

“Don’t change the subject. Answer me first.”

Wen Ran protested unhappily as he dragged her away.
