Chapter 1365: 1364 Let mom help you make the decision

Gu Kai’s tall figure suddenly stiffened.

His alluring lips tightened into a straight line, and a flicker of struggle appeared in his eyes. But in just a moment, his expression reverted to cold indifference, icy and forbidding.

“Don’t go disturbing my mother. You and Fu Jingyi are both unworthy of seeing her.” Gu Kai threw out this statement and walked away from the sofa. His imposing figure swiftly disappeared into the stairwell.

Bai Yuqin stood alone in front of the sofa, twisting her body as she gazed toward the stairwell on the second floor.

Her heart was filled with desolation.

Yiyi hated her, Gu Kai hated her, and Fu Jingyi never loved her even until his death. Bai Yuqin realized that her entire life had been the epitome of sorrow.

She raised her hand to wipe her eyes. Step by step, she slowly walked away from the sofa and headed toward the door.

After Gu Kai went upstairs, Mo Xiuchen received a call from the company and left to handle matters there. On the third floor, the four children were in the middle of their class, while Wen Ran and Gu Kai sat at a small round table on the balcony.

From the moment he came upstairs until now—fifteen minutes had passed—Gu Kai hadn’t said a single word.

After Mo Xiuchen left, Gu Kai took over and continued peeling nuts for Wen Ran.

“Brother.”

Wen Ran gently called out.

Gu Kai looked up and gave her a warm smile, suppressing his emotions and speaking casually, “Ranran, I’ll cook lunch for you and the little ones today.”

Wen Ran’s chest tightened, and she slid her chair closer to him. Tilting her face slightly upward, her eyes softened as she gazed at Gu Kai, “Brother, what did Bai Yuqin say to you? And what did Li En tell you? Could you share it with me?”

Just like the messages she sent and the calls she made to Gu Kai, Wen Ran had always conveyed the same thing: For her, no matter how deep old grudges ran, her brother’s happiness was the most important thing.

She felt sorrow for the pain he had endured all these years, sorrow for his struggle to love someone only to find she was the daughter of his enemy.

Sorrow for his eventual decision to set aside hatred and confess his feelings to Bai Yiyi. And even greater sorrow for his lingering solitude and forced smile now.

Gu Kai’s fingers paused slightly in the act of peeling pistachios. His dark, ink-like eyes flickered before he raised them to meet Wen Ran’s gaze, which was filled with deep concern.

Among his complex emotions, a faint warm current seeped in, gradually spreading throughout his heart.

“Ranran, Bai Yuqin and Li En said basically the same thing. She admitted to what happened back then; she was involved.”

Gu Kai’s voice rumbled deeply, resonating in Wen Ran’s ears. Her brows furrowed slightly as she pursed her lips, quietly listening to her brother continue.

“She also said that she hated our mother, so back then, she stood by and watched Fu Jingyi hurt you without stopping him.”

“I don’t remember her at all.”

Wen Ran frowned, trying to recall the events of the past.

“You were too young then. Even if you did meet her, you wouldn’t remember. Memories have limits; you only retain the most vivid ones.”

Gu Kai explained gently. He was right—Wen Ran didn’t recall everything, and most of what she remembered were the moments when Fu Jingyi caused her pain, her fear of him.

“So what about Yiyi?”

Mo Xiuchen had told her that Bai Yiyi had seen her back then as well.

“On Bai Yiyi’s sixth birthday, Bai Yuqin took her to find Fu Jingyi. She happened to witness Fu Jingyi hurting you.”

Gu Kai’s tone turned cold. “According to Bai Yuqin, Fu Jingyi erased her memory of that day.”

“Brother.”

Wen Ran took hold of Gu Kai’s hand, lowering her gaze to the scar in his palm. Softly, she said, “Even though Bai Yuqin and Fu Jingyi hurt me, and even though they caused Mom’s death, none of this has anything to do with Tongtong or Yiyi, right?”

“Ranran, don’t try to convince me. I’m not going to be with Bai Yiyi again.”

He couldn’t get past his own inner barriers.

“I’m not asking you to accept Yiyi again.”

Wen Ran shook her head. “Tongtong was crying last night, asking for her mom. I told her her mom was on a business trip and would be back in a few days. What I mean is, don’t let Tongtong spend her whole life without seeing her mom.”

Gu Kai’s body stiffened slightly.

He remembered Tongtong mentioning that her mom had argued with her grandma and ended up crying.

He also recalled Bai Yuqin’s plea for him not to hate Bai Yiyi, emphasizing that Bai Yiyi loved him.

“Brother, if Mom were here, she wouldn’t want you to live in hatred for your entire life. Unless you can let go of Tongtong completely, you’ll always think of Yiyi, of Fu Jingyi, and of Bai Yuqin.”

Wen Ran hated Li En deeply. Her brother had worked so hard to leave the past behind, yet that despicable man had dredged everything up again.

She’d rather her brother never know about Bai Yuqin’s involvement back then. Then he could be happy with Yiyi.

Gu Kai turned his face away, refusing to let Ranran see the flash of pain in his eyes.

Wen Ran’s grip on his hand tightened slightly. “Brother, let’s go visit Mom now.”

“Why?”

Gu Kai asked stiffly.

Wen Ran forced a cheerful laugh and tugged him up insistently. “There are plenty of reasons. First, I miss Mom. Second, you definitely miss Mom even more. And third, well, you’re struggling with this decision—so let’s let Mom decide for you.”

“The kids’ class is almost over.”

Gu Kai’s body remained rigid, unwilling to move.

Wen Ran chuckled. “Don’t worry; the auntie’s here. They’ll behave well. Come on, the sooner we go, the sooner we come back. You did promise to cook lunch.”

Gu Kai was reluctantly dragged downstairs and out of the villa by Wen Ran. Wen Ran called Qing Feng to bring the car around, holding onto Gu Kai as they stood at the villa entrance waiting.

Once inside the car, Wen Ran told Qing Feng the destination before turning to Gu Kai with a teasing look. “Brother, I heard from Mo Xiuchen that you went to the seaside villa Dad built for Mom for a little vacation? If I had known, you should’ve taken me!”

Gu Kai glanced at her pouty face and reached out to ruffle her hair. “Take you along? So you could chatter away like you’re doing now?”

“Ah! Stop messing up my hair!” Wen Ran protested, grabbing his large hand and pulling it away. “Chattering is better than you sitting around alone, brooding in silence, feeling sad and upset.”

At the end, Wen Ran cheekily stuck out her tongue at him.

Gu Kai knew Wen Ran was trying to lift his mood. Indeed, her efforts warmed his heart considerably. At the very least, he had fulfilled his promise to Mom—to find his sister.

But thinking of this brought forth another layer of melancholy. Gu Kai’s long arm wrapped around Wen Ran’s shoulders, and he said softly, “Ranran, I just feel like I’ve let Mom down, and I’ve let you down for all the suffering you endured.”

Wen Ran felt a sharp pang in her heart.

Her face, though, brightened with a radiant smile. “Brother, you’re so silly. Even though Mom isn’t here anymore, she’d definitely want you to be happy. Look at me—I’m perfectly fine now, aren’t I? Justice always prevails, doesn’t it? Fu Jingyi and Li En have already faced their consequences. Bai Yuqin made mistakes back then and has surely regretted them over the years.”

She paused briefly before adding, “Last night, when Bai Yuqin spoke to me about this, she even cried, saying that Yiyi hates her now.”
