Chapter 1363: Mama cried
Chapter 1363: Mama cried
Gu Kai and Mo Xiuchen changed their flight last minute.
Originally, they planned to return to G City tomorrow, but after Gu Kai received a call from Tongtong, he couldn’t stay any longer. He was eager to fly back to G City immediately so that when Tongtong opened her eyes, she could see him.
By the time they arrived home, it was already one in the morning.
Mo Xiuchen didn’t want to disturb Wen Ran’s rest, fearing that if she knew they had rushed back overnight, she would stay up waiting for them. So, he didn’t tell her.
In the early hours of the morning, Wen Ran was drowsily sleeping when she felt a slight tickle on her lips. Waking from her dream, her gaze instantly collided with the deep and dark eyes of Mo Xiuchen.
“Xiuchen, why are you back?”
Her sleepiness vanished halfway in an instant, and Wen Ran stared at Mo Xiuchen’s handsome face in shock.
Mo Xiuchen settled into the space beside her, stretched out his long arm, and pulled Wen Ran into his arms. His low, magnetic voice resonated in the peaceful room, “Ah Kai received a call from Tongtong and couldn’t sit still, so we hurried back overnight. And now, here we are.”
“Where’s my brother?”
Wen Ran had already guessed what might have happened—a situation she had seen before. She knew how much her brother adored Tongtong.
Over the past few days, he had been refusing to see anyone because of something Li En said. Clearly, he missed Tongtong terribly.
“Ah Kai carried Tongtong to the guest room to sleep,” Mo Xiuchen said softly, then lowered his head to kiss her lips. “Ranran, did you miss me?”
“You’ve only been gone for one day…”
Before Wen Ran could finish her words, Mo Xiuchen’s kiss silenced her. She tried to push him away, but his hand slipped under her nightgown, the heat of his touch making her body tremble. A moment later, his lips left hers and nibbled at her earlobe. “Ranran, I missed you. Missed you very, very much…”
…
In the early morning, Gu Kai was woken up by Tongtong’s joyful and innocent “Daddy!” Opening his eyes, he saw Tongtong’s small figure sitting beside him, grabbing him with both hands, her large, bright eyes sparkling with excitement.
“Daddy! Daddy!”
Seeing him awake, Tongtong called him twice more, her little mouth curving into a big smile, her eyes squinting with happiness. Her adorable appearance softened Gu Kai’s heart into a pool of water.
He reached out to caress Tongtong’s cheek and said gently, “Good morning, Tongtong.”
“Good morning, Daddy!”
Tongtong’s joy was so simple—so simple that just seeing her father made her feel as though she could fly in delight. But looking at Tongtong’s pure, joyous smile, Gu Kai’s feelings were indescribably complex.
He sat up, pulled Tongtong into his arms, and kissed her forehead. “Tongtong, is what Daddy told you last night true? That when you open your eyes this morning, you would see me?”
“It’s true! Daddy’s the best!”
Tongtong lifted her small face from his chest, her eyes shining brightly as she looked at him. “Mommy went on a business trip.”
The smile on Gu Kai’s lips froze momentarily as he asked softly, “Tongtong, do you like it when Daddy stays with you all the time?”
“I like it!”
Tongtong’s cheerful smile remained bright as ever. Her joy was so unabashedly expressed before Gu Kai that, to show how much she indeed liked it, she planted a loud kiss on his handsome face.
Gu Kai was amused by Tongtong’s antics. “Then today, Tongtong will come home with Daddy. From now on, you’ll live with Grandpa and Daddy, alright?”
Tongtong blinked her big eyes. “Mommy cried.”
“Huh?” Gu Kai froze, puzzled by Tongtong’s words.
Tongtong’s smile faded as she said softly, “Mommy cried.”
Whether it was the thoughtfulness and sensitivity in Tongtong’s words about her mother crying or simply the mention of Bai Yiyi’s tears, Gu Kai felt a sudden ache in his chest upon hearing this.
“Tongtong, when did Mommy cry?” Gu Kai asked further.
Tongtong pouted, “Last night, Mommy cried. Grandma argued.”
As she continued, Tongtong grew anxious, struggling to express herself in complete sentences. But she desperately wanted her father to know that Mommy had cried.
Gu Kai understood.
He softly comforted her. “Don’t worry, Tongtong. Daddy understands. You mean Grandma came back, Mommy and Grandma argued, and then Mommy cried, right?”
“Mommy.”
Tongtong grabbed Gu Kai’s hand, wanting him to go and comfort Mommy.
Twisting her body, she spotted the phone on the small table by Gu Kai’s bedside. She immediately called out, “Phone! Call Mommy.”
“Tongtong, Mommy’s on a business trip. We can’t disturb her. Let Daddy first help Tongtong get dressed, alright?”
“Okay.”
Tongtong felt slightly disappointed, but the next moment Gu Kai lifted her high up above his head, and she burst out laughing again.

Bai Yuqin missed her granddaughter dearly, so she came to Wen Ran’s Home after breakfast.
She didn’t know that Gu Kai and Mo Xiuchen had rushed back overnight. Nanny Zhang led her into the living room, and she was met with the sight of Gu Kai and Mo Xiuchen sitting on the sofa, causing a flash of surprise in her eyes and a faint look of embarrassment on her face.
Tongtong hadn’t seen her father for several days, and this entire morning she clung to Gu Kai, wanting to be held by him. She refused to play downstairs with her cousins.
When Bai Yuqin walked in, Tongtong was happily playing ‘Fight Bugs,’ clutching Gu Kai’s fingers. Gu Kai lowered his gaze, his eyes filled with gentle affection for Tongtong.
Mo Xiuchen and Wen Ran sat on another sofa while the three little ones played and ran around the living room.
“Ah Kai, when did you come back?”
Bai Yuqin’s face showed a flicker of awkwardness, but soon after, she regained her composure, a faintly unnatural smile appearing on her lips.
The look Gu Kai gave her was indifferent.
Compared to his previous attitude toward her, his cold and distant gaze felt like a knife wound, causing Bai Yuqin’s face to turn pale.
Wen Ran hesitated momentarily and then greeted Bai Yuqin, “Aunt Bai, come sit.”
Tongtong called her ‘Grandma,’ then dropped one of Gu Kai’s fingers and grasped her father’s right hand, examining the scar on his palm.
Bai Yuqin acknowledged the greeting with a nod and approached the sofa. Mo Xiuchen got up and switched to sitting by Gu Kai, while Wen Ran gestured to the seat in front of her. Bai Yuqin ended up sitting on the same sofa as Wen Ran.
Gu Kai had remained silent throughout, and despite Wen Ran’s warm invitation, Bai Yuqin felt constrained, inadvertently making the living room atmosphere tense with her presence.
Looking at the indifference etched into Gu Kai’s features, Bai Yuqin spoke softly, “Ah Kai, can we talk?”
Gu Kai barely moved, lifting his eyes slightly to glance at her, then lowering them again to focus on Tongtong. He asked coldly, “What does Aunt Bai wish to talk about?”
Ultimately, he still addressed her politely as Aunt Bai—out of respect for Tongtong and her role as an elder.
But for Gu Kai, this was the furthest extent of courtesy he could muster.
Wen Ran simply cast a glance at Gu Kai without speaking. As she lowered her gaze, her long lashes hid a fleeting expression of sadness and heartache.
Taking in her subtle reaction, Mo Xiuchen’s deep eyes flickered briefly. He nudged Gu Kai lightly with his elbow. Gu Kai lifted his head, following his gaze to look at Wen Ran.
A moment later, he shifted his gaze away to rest on Bai Yuqin. His voice was detached as he said, “Ranran is here as well. Whatever happened before, Aunt Bai, just say it all at once now.”
