Chapter 1362: 1361 likes him
The message wasn’t from that person.
Instead, it was a promotional notification from an online store she had shopped at earlier, announcing new arrivals.
Bai Yiyi’s tightly strung nerves suddenly snapped as she read the contents of the message.
Her heartbeats grew slow and feeble; it seemed that without a message from that person, her entire being had lost its vitality.
She silently scolded herself, “Bai Yiyi, stop thinking about it! Gu Kai won’t contact you again, much less let you come back. What you owe him, this bond, is merely your repayment of that debt.”

In the afternoon, Tongtong woke up. Bai Yuqin played with her for a while. With Momo, Ziyi, and Xin Xin joining in, Tongtong was very happy and didn’t ask for her mom.
By evening, Bai Yuqin went back home.
That’s when Tongtong started missing her mom. While Ziyi, Xin Xin, and Momo continued playing enthusiastically, Tongtong ran over to Wen Ran, gazing at her expectantly. “Auntie, the phone.”
“Tongtong, what do you need the phone for?” Wen Ran pretended not to understand, bending down with a smile as she looked at Tongtong.
Tongtong blinked her big eyes, pointing at her own chest, and said, “I miss Mommy, call her.”
Even though children don’t fully grasp time, they have their own sense of routine. Every day, at this time, her mom would be home.
But today, her mom hadn’t come back yet.
Looking at Tongtong’s finger pressed against her little chest, Wen Ran felt a sudden ache in her heart. She gently stroked Tongtong’s cheek and softly grasped the little hand pointing at her chest. “Tongtong, Mommy’s on a business trip. Daddy will be back tomorrow. How about you sleep with Auntie tonight?”
“I want Mommy.”
Tongtong’s small face revealed a hint of sadness, her pitiful expression tugging at Wen Ran’s heartstrings.
“Tongtong, how about this? Auntie will let you talk to Daddy, okay? Mommy’s working right now, and if you call her, you might interrupt her work.”
“Okay.” Tongtong was still very obedient.
As soon as she heard she could talk to her dad, her little face lit up with a sunny smile.
Wen Ran dialed Mo Xiuchen’s phone. After two rings, Mo Xiuchen’s voice came through, “Hello, Ranran.”
“Xiuchen, is my brother next to you? Let him take the phone and talk to Tongtong for a bit.” Wen Ran rubbed Tongtong’s head with one hand while holding the phone in the other.
“Ah Kai is here.” Mo Xiuchen handed the phone to Gu Kai, and a moment later, Gu Kai’s voice was heard.
When Wen Ran heard his voice, she immediately turned on the speakerphone, smiling as she said, “Tongtong, call Daddy.”
“Daddy.” Tongtong’s voice rang out with a mix of childishness and delight.
On the other end of the line, Gu Kai’s eyes flickered with mixed emotions upon hearing Tongtong’s voice. His grip on the phone suddenly tightened as he replied in a deep but gentle tone, “Tongtong, Daddy will be back tomorrow. Can you sleep with Auntie tonight?”
“I miss Daddy.”
Tongtong blinked her eyes, her face glowing with a radiant smile.
She hadn’t seen her dad in several days, and just hearing his voice made her incredibly excited.
Children, after all, are easy to please.
Tongtong’s “I miss Daddy” resonated deep in Gu Kai’s heart, as if an invisible hand had fiercely clenched it.
An inexpressible wave of emotions spread rapidly throughout his being. He pressed his lips together and, using his gentlest voice, said, “Daddy misses Tongtong too. If you sleep tonight, as soon as you open your eyes in the morning, Daddy will be right there.”
“Really?” Tongtong’s little mouth widened into a big smile, her longing for Daddy clearly written across her face.
“Of course it’s true. Daddy wouldn’t lie to you. If you go to bed early tonight, you’ll find Daddy in front of you when you wake up.”
“Goodnight, Daddy.” Tongtong’s eyes sparkled as she suddenly blurted out the farewell, then urged Wen Ran to hang up the phone.
Wen Ran said a few words to Gu Kai before following Tongtong’s wish and ending the call.
Tongtong grabbed one of Wen Ran’s fingers with her little hand, tugging her upstairs as she said, “Auntie, time to sleep.”
Wen Ran felt a pang in her chest, bent down to pick up Tongtong, and gave a few instructions to the two nannies nearby to keep an eye on the other three kids. Then, carrying Tongtong in her arms, she headed upstairs to tuck her in.
Tongtong didn’t even want to hear a bedtime story.
After Wen Ran bathed her, she fell asleep within minutes.
Watching her adorable sleeping face, Wen Ran hesitated for a moment before taking two photos of Tongtong and sending them to Bai Yiyi.
She included a short message: “Yiyi, Tongtong is already asleep. Before she went to bed, she said she missed Mommy.”
As Wen Ran exited the children’s room, Bai Yiyi’s call came through.
“Yiyi.”
Wen Ran answered the phone with a soft voice.
“Ranran, thank you for your hard work.” Bai Yiyi’s voice was calm, but Wen Ran knew she was just pretending.
As a mother herself, Wen Ran understood the pain of being separated from her child.
Although Yiyi had chosen this willingly, making such a decision must feel as excruciating as the days when Momo had been away from her.
“Yiyi, Aunt Bai came over this afternoon. She told me everything.”
Bai Yuqin had once helped Fu Jingyi, and when Wen Ran learned about it earlier that afternoon, it had left her feeling a bit uneasy.
But hearing Tongtong say she missed her mom and dad earlier made Wen Ran realize that nothing was more important than Tongtong’s happiness and joy.
Suddenly, she felt compelled to persuade Bai Yiyi to return. As soon as the thought occurred, the words spilled out, “Yiyi, come back. My brother is returning to G City tomorrow. You both should talk in person, even if it’s just for Tongtong’s sake.”
“Ranran, I fully trust leaving Tongtong with your brother. As for what happened back then, I can only say I’m sorry.”
“Yiyi, that wasn’t your fault. You don’t need to take all the blame onto yourself. My brother left only because he couldn’t accept things in the moment. He’ll come around; he won’t blame you.”
“I won’t go back, Ranran. Do you know why? I like your brother.”
Bai Yiyi’s voice pierced through the chilly early winter night, infused with a tinge of sorrow and melancholy.
Wen Ran felt inexplicably sad as well, her brows furrowing slightly. “Yiyi, if you like my brother, then that’s all the more reason not to leave.”
“No, it’s because I like him that I can’t face him. Regardless of whether the events of that year had anything to do with me, I can no longer face him as if nothing happened.”
After Gu Kai disappeared silently for ten days, showing with his actions that he hated her and couldn’t accept the truth, how could Bai Yiyi possibly have the audacity to think she could continue things with him?
If their roles were reversed, she knew she could never accept the child of someone responsible for her mother’s death…
What’s more, Gu Kai must still believe she deceived him.
That she hid the fact her mother was also involved in those events. “Ranran, Tongtong is close to you and enjoys playing with Ziyi, Momo, and Xin Xin. From now on, I’ll have to trouble you to take care of her. After all, Gu Kai is a man, and there are many details he might not notice.”
