Chapter 1355: Delivered to Your Doorstep

After finishing her call with Bai Yiyi, Wen Ran dialed Gu Kai’s number.

As expected, just as Bai Yiyi said, his phone was turned off.

Wen Ran furrowed her delicate brows slightly, her curiosity deepening. She pursed her lips and decided to call her father instead.

After a few rings, her father Gu Yan’s gentle voice came through, “Ranran, why are you calling me at this time? Is something wrong?”

“Dad, did my brother go on a business trip?”

Wen Ran got straight to the point.

“Ah Kai? I don’t know what’s gotten into him. He called me earlier and said he wanted to take a few days off. Then he told me that if anyone asked, just say he went on a business trip.”

“Oh.” Wen Ran blinked a few times and pondered that maybe her brother had a fight with Bai Yiyi.

“Ranran, do you know what’s going on with your brother? I feel like he’s been acting strange these past few days, but he won’t tell me anything when I ask.”

Seeing that Gu Yan was just as clueless, Wen Ran forced a smile and tried to sound lighthearted, “He’s probably just tired and wants to take a few days off since his hand hasn’t fully healed yet. Dad, I’ll call him later and check in. He’ll be fine.”

“Okay. He said he’s tired and wants to rest. Whatever. He’s not a kid anymore, so I won’t bother digging deeper. Ranran, I have to get back to work. You and Mo Xiuchen come home for dinner tonight. I’ll be back in the afternoon.”

Gu Yan ran a hospital and, like Mo Xiuchen, was always busy. He didn’t get to see Ranran often, especially now that she was busy taking care of three little ones. She rarely visited the hospital.

They mostly kept in touch by phone.

Wen Ran smiled as she replied, “Dad, Mo Xiuchen isn’t home either. If he comes back this afternoon, we’ll head over for dinner tonight.”

After hanging up the call, Wen Ran instructed Qing Feng to start driving. She didn’t call Bai Yiyi back immediately but instead struck up a conversation with Jing Xiaocha beside her.

“Can I call you Xiaocha?”

“Of course you can.” Jing Xiaocha nodded. She felt that Wen Ran was different from the wealthy wives and rich young ladies she had met before.

Wen Ran was warm, calm, and had a down-to-earth “big sister next door” kind of vibe.

Interpersonal connection truly depended on fate, and Wen Ran felt a natural affection for the bright-eyed, fresh-faced young woman before her.

“I heard you’re planning to study abroad.” Wen Ran had a gentle smile on her face, her tone filled with concern.

Jing Xiaocha blinked a few times and lowered her gaze before quietly replying, “I want to study abroad, but honestly, it’s more about wanting to leave G City, to escape Zhang Jinlei and his wife. I don’t want to have anything more to do with them.”

She had gotten into university but ended up unable to attend due to various reasons.

Thinking about this, Jing Xiaocha pressed her lips tightly together, her sharp chin reflecting her stubbornness.

Wen Ran’s eyes flashed with a trace of surprise as she looked at Jing Xiaocha. “So, are you still planning to go abroad now?”

“Zhang Jinlei and his wife may face time in jail, but even though I hate Zhang Minghui, I can’t abandon him entirely.”

Jing Xiaocha, despite everything, was kind-hearted. Even though Zhang Guanghui and his parents had lashed out at her repeatedly, she couldn’t bring herself to ignore a five-year-old child.

Wen Ran asked concernedly, “What major did you choose during your college entrance exam?”

Wen Ran returned home close to noon.

Bai Yiyi and Tongtong were still at her house, and the kids were playing happily together while Bai Yiyi sat off to the side, lost in thought.

Wen Ran walked over and tapped her shoulder, startling Bai Yiyi, who flinched. When she looked up and saw Wen Ran, she let out a breath and patted her chest in annoyance, “Ranran, you scared me to death.”

“Yiyi, are you thinking about my brother?”

Wen Ran teased her with a smile. Seeing Bai Yiyi glare at her, she sat down beside her. From the playroom, Momo, Ziyi, and Xin Xin spotted her and, thrilled, shouted “Mom!” as they rushed toward her.

“Ugh, can’t you pretend you didn’t see me?”

Wen Ran’s expression bloomed with gentle happiness as she joked with mock displeasure.

The three little ones threw themselves into her arms, two of them clinging to her arms while Momo, the first to reach her, claimed her embrace.

It took her a full ten minutes to settle the kids down.

“Yiyi, on the way home, I tried calling my brother, but his phone is genuinely off. I also called my dad, and he told me that he was the one who sent my brother on a business trip due to some emergency situation.”

Wen Ran frowned, her expression showing no sign of deceit. “My dad is also busy with something. He only said a few words before hanging up on me.”

“If he’s really on a business trip, then I’m relieved.” Bai Yiyi lowered her gaze, staring at her toes.

She had been feeling uneasy, not knowing why Gu Kai had suddenly left on a business trip, turned off his phone, and hadn’t taken even a moment to inform her.

“Don’t overthink it. If he’s not on a business trip, what else could he be doing? Running off with another woman?”

Wen Ran chuckled at her own joke.

Bai Yiyi gave her a playful glare, pursed her lips, and then earnestly said, “Ranran, there’s something I didn’t tell you.”

“What’s that?”

Wen Ran tilted her head, curiosity written all over her face.

“Yesterday afternoon, I went to see Li En. Lu Zhiyan… Li En knows some important secrets, but he refuses to reveal them.”

“Yiyi, are you afraid my brother might get jealous because of this?”

“No, the person Li En actually wanted to meet was your brother, Gu Kai. I didn’t know at first; it was President Wen who told me. Both he and I felt that Li En meeting your brother probably wouldn’t lead to anything good, so I went instead.”

“What does this have to do with my brother’s business trip?” Wen Ran’s eyes glinted with light as her face broke into a cheerful smile.

“Your brother knows I went to see Li En, but he hasn’t asked me a single thing about it. This morning, I received a message from him about the business trip, just one minute before Tongtong had a call with him. He just said two sentences to her and then hung up.”

Wen Ran pieced together the situation, understanding what Bai Yiyi was implying.

It seemed Bai Yiyi suspected her brother Gu Kai was upset about her meeting with Li En.

“Yiyi, you’re overthinking. My brother may dislike Li En, but he wouldn’t be upset just because you met him. He really did go on a business trip and will be back in a few days.”

“Let’s hope so.” Bai Yiyi’s eyes showed a trace of melancholy as she lightly pressed her lips together.

In the afternoon, Mo Xiuchen returned, and he brought Wen Jin along.

Wen Ran had just sent Bai Yiyi and Tongtong off. When she saw Wen Jin, her eyes lit up, and she eagerly pulled him over to the couch.

She proceeded to fuss over him, pouring water and washing fruit.

“Ranran, Ah Jin’s been here before. You don’t need to treat him like a guest.” Mo Xiuchen’s tone carried a touch of jealousy as he watched Wen Ran pamper Wen Jin with so much enthusiasm.

Wen Ran shot him an annoyed look and handed Wen Jin a slice of apple before sitting down beside Mo Xiuchen. “Brother, I was just about to call you. I didn’t expect you to come over.”

“So, it turns out you’re being so attentive because you’ve got something in mind. If I’d known, I wouldn’t have come.” Wen Jin teased with a grin before biting into the apple. Then he asked, “Ranran, you were going to call me about something—what is it?”
