Hearing the words "brother-in-law," Wen Ci’s gaze involuntarily shifted to Wen Yaozu, who then said, "Sis, Brother-in-law wants you to take the phone."

"Okay."

Wen Ci walked over to the landline and sat down.

It had been less than eight hours since she parted from Huo Jingyuan, but she already missed him terribly. In a calm, unhurried voice, she asked, "Is there something you need?"

"Honey, the Northwest Military Region called. I’m being temporarily transferred to Shanbei."

"What?" Wen Ci frowned, her expression immediately growing serious. "But your injuries... they aren’t fully healed yet, are they?"

"They want me to go over and serve as a regimental political commissar for a year."

"Political Commissar?!"

Wen Ci’s eyes widened. Although she wasn’t entirely clear on the hierarchy of military ranks, she knew the difference between a regimental commander and a regimental political commissar.

Wen Ci collected herself and asked, "Why so sudden? Do you have to go to Shanbei right away, or can you wait until you’ve fully recovered?"

"The transfer is next week. They want me to go over there to scout for promising talent. On paper, I’ll be the regimental political commissar, but it’s just a nominal position. I won’t have to do any training or strenuous work."

"Oh, that’s perfect, then."

She had been worried that Huo Jingyuan wouldn’t be able to adjust to a year of recuperation in the family quarters in Beijing, but returning to the military as a regimental political commissar was a different story.

Even if it was just a nominal position, it was still quite an achievement.

"So, should I move to the base with you?"

Huo Jingyuan answered honestly, "It’s not required by the higher-ups, but I’m eligible to have my spouse accompany me. I’d like you to come, if you’re willing."

"Of course I will."

’I’m his wife. If I don’t go, who will?’

Besides, Shanbei wasn’t that far from Beijing—only a day’s journey by train. She could still manage her business; she’d just have to rush back to Shanbei on the same day.

"What about your business?"

"I can still run it."

The military didn’t have a rule against an officer’s spouse running a business. In fact, if a business grew to a certain scale, it was even encouraged and supported.

Suddenly, out of the corner of her eye, Wen Ci saw Wen Yaozu sitting quietly on the sofa, a look of anticipation on his face. "Then what do we do about Wen Yaozu? Do we take him with us?"

There was still a month until his school break.

If they were to take Wen Yaozu, they would need to go back to their old home in the mountain village and get permission from her parents.

"The school year doesn’t start for a while, right?"

"The problem is we’d need his parents’ permission."

Huo Jingyuan fell silent.

He knew Wen Ci had suffered hardships in her childhood.

She definitely didn’t want to see her parents again.

And as a minor, Wen Yaozu would need his legal guardian’s permission to travel.

Wen Yaozu, who had been listening from the side, immediately piped up, "I’ll go back and talk to Mom and Dad. They’ll definitely agree to let me stay with you guys for the summer."

"Then what about Yaozu learning how to use a computer?"

As the temporarily assigned regimental political commissar, Huo Jingyuan would be allocated temporary housing, but it would be nowhere near as large as the house in the family compound in Beijing.

Besides, he’d be transferring again in a year, so setting up a computer in the Shanbei family quarters wasn’t practical.

"Let’s discuss this in detail when I get back."

Wen Ci nodded. "Okay."

She’d been exhausted all night, and though she’d slept for a bit in Hangzhou and on the plane, she couldn’t shake the mental fatigue. "Okay, I’ll wait for you to come home."

"Mm."

Wen Ci hung up the phone.

Wen Yaozu immediately pressed her, "Is Brother-in-law getting transferred somewhere? I can live with you guys during my summer vacation.

Mom and Dad will definitely agree.

If they don’t agree, I’ll go on a hunger strike!"

Ever since he was a child, going on a hunger strike had been his favorite ploy.

Whatever he wanted, if he wasn’t allowed to have it, he would simply refuse to eat.

Usually, by the next day, he would get what he wanted.
