First Night with the Army: The Stoic Big Shot Is Done Pretending
Chapter 194: Brick Phone
Wen Ci and Wen Yaozu were enthusiastically invited into the store by a salesperson. The shop sold not only brick phones but also pagers.
"Our department store is having a special promotion right now. Buy a brick phone and get a free pager. Would you be interested in learning more?"
Ever since brick phones came out, the price of pagers had started to drop. Many department stores were even running promotions, like offering a free pager with the purchase of a brick phone.
Wen Ci’s eyes lit up. Her gaze swept across the pagers in the display case as she asked in pleasant surprise, "You give away a free pager if you buy a brick phone?"
"That’s right."
Wen Ci asked, "Which model do you give away?"
’Pagers can cost anywhere from a few hundred to over a thousand yuan. If the free model isn’t too old, this deal might be worth taking.’
’That way, when I get back to the Northwest, I can still use the pager to contact Yaozu anytime.’
"This one."
The salesperson went back behind the counter, took out one of the pagers, and said with a smile, "This model came out two years ago."
Wen Ci took it and fiddled with it in her hands.
It was her first time handling a pager. It came with a pull ring and a belt clip, and the screen showed the battery level. "What’s the original price for this model?"
"Fifteen hundred yuan."
Hearing this, Wen Ci’s eyes widened.
’What a steal!’
’A forty-thousand-yuan brick phone came with a free fifteen-hundred-yuan pager. No matter how you looked at it, that was a bargain.’ "Are there any other promotions?"
"Ma’am, this is a one-time-only deal."
Their department store was one of the top-ranked in Beijing, and they were running this kind of promotion specifically to attract high-value customers to buy brick phones.
Forty thousand yuan might not sound like much, but it was enough to buy a plot of land and build a house in the suburbs of Beijing. And that forty thousand was just the initial expense.
You also had to pay a monthly network fee.
Wen Ci’s gaze swept over the brick phone prices. She hesitated, biting her lower lip, and asked, "Will it work in a place like... like the Northwest?"
"Well, I’m not too sure about that myself. You could ask the telecom company. Their office is three hundred meters to the left after you exit the store."
"Thanks."
Wen Ci decided to ask the telecom company first before considering whether to buy it. If it didn’t work in the Northwest, the brick phone would be nothing more than a useless brick.
-
Each floor of the department store sold different things. When they arrived at the clothing department, they were greeted by the sight of all sorts of styles of clothes, a pleasing sight to behold.
"Folks, looking to buy some clothes?"
Wen Ci nodded. "Where is the men’s section?"
"Buying for the little boy?"
Wen Yaozu lifted his chin. "I’m not a little boy! I’m about to start middle school."
Wen Ci raised her hand and playfully smacked Wen Yaozu on the head.
Half an hour later, she had picked out quite a few outfits for Wen Yaozu.
After paying, Wen Ci asked, "I’m looking for Manager Li Ming. Is he in?"
"He is. Are you...?"
Wen Ci’s eyes curved into a smile. "I have an appointment with him."
She was here to see the department store manager to negotiate the profit-sharing terms for the clothes. Once that was settled, she could consider buying the remaining stock from Xu Jinghe.
Before long, Manager Li walked out with a smile. "You must be Boss Wen?"
"I am."
-
After finishing her business meeting, Wen Ci was about to head to the telecom company, but when she got to the door, she found they had already closed for the day. She couldn’t help but gasp.
’Is heaven trying to stop me from buying a brick phone?’
"Sis, are you still buying the brick phone?"
Wen Ci thought for a moment. "Let’s go home first. We’ll figure it out tomorrow."
Not long after they got home, the landline started ringing. Wen Yaozu ran over at top speed, grabbing the receiver. "Let me get it!"
"Brother-in-law, when are you coming back?"
