First Night with the Army: The Stoic Big Shot Is Done Pretending
Chapter 185: What if I Can’t Have Children?
’Maybe I should go see a traditional Chinese doctor?’ Wen Ci wondered. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust Western medicine, just that at this point, the country’s medical equipment wasn’t very advanced. A traditional doctor could just check her pulse, saving her the trouble of all the complicated tests that came with Western medicine.
Before she knew it, the words slipped out, "Do you think I should go see a traditional Chinese doctor?"
The moment the words left her mouth, she remembered Huo Jingyuan was still on a video call with his aunt. Her cheeks flushed instantly, and bowing her head, she fled the study.
Huo Jingyuan watched her fleeing figure and began speaking quickly, "Aunt Huo, I just called to let you know we’re safe. I’ll bring the computer to Beijing later, and we can talk more then."
"Go ahead."
Huo Jingyuan didn’t even have time to turn off the computer. He chased right after her, his voice gentle. "Darling, what are you running for?"
"It was so embarrassing."
Wen Ci had only run from the study into their bedroom. She sat on the edge of the bed, lightly tapping her own mouth. ’How could I have just blurted that out?’
’In the eighties, having children was extremely important. If there was really a problem with me...’
Suddenly, Wen Ci looked up at Huo Jingyuan, her eyes narrowing slightly as she asked seriously, "Huo Jingyuan, what if I can’t have children?"
At her words, Huo Jingyuan slowly approached the bed, pulled Wen Ci into his arms, and smoothed her hair. His voice was as deep and soothing as a cello:
"We don’t have to have children. This life is about the two of us."
"Are you being sincere, or are you just saying what I want to hear?"
Huo Jingyuan took her slender hand and pressed it against his chest, right over his heart. He gazed at her with love-filled eyes and said seriously, word by word:
"If any of that was a lie, may I be struck by lightning and meet a terrible..."
Before he could finish, she sealed his lips with her own. Their warm lips pressed together for a long moment.
Just as he was about to deepen the kiss,
Wen Ci pushed him away. "Don’t you ever say things like that again."
Although she was a staunch materialist, she still believed one should avoid tempting fate. Some things were better left unsaid.
"Okay," Huo Jingyuan nodded. He reached out to stroke Wen Ci’s belly and said gently, "Maybe the little one just hasn’t picked us yet."
「Meanwhile, downstairs」
Grandma Liu had called Su Wanqing into the living room. As a woman of experience, she could see the adoration in the girl’s eyes. She said kindly, "Wanqing, we have an old saying that you have to believe in fate. Ah Yuan is already married now, so when will your own marriage be on the agenda?"
Abroad, Aunt Huo and the Su Family weren’t just neighbors, but business partners as well. It was best to try and persuade the girl if she could.
"Grandma Liu..."
Seeing that Su Wanqing wasn’t getting the hint, she spoke bluntly. "Then let Grandma be direct. I hope you will keep your distance from Ah Yuan. We invited you to our home out of respect for your parents’ generation.
If you continue to pester Ah Yuan, I will have your family step in."
She laid it all out, not mincing a single word.
Her grandson finally had a happy family. Not only did she not want anyone to destroy it, but she also hoped Su Wanqing wouldn’t go down the wrong path.
As a regimental-level cadre, anyone who tried to break up Huo Jingyuan’s family would definitely be severely punished.
"I didn’t." Su Wanqing looked at Grandma Liu with a wronged expression, her eyes brimming with tears that looked like they could fall at any moment.
"I wasn’t pestering Brother Jingyuan."
"Do you really think this old woman is blind?"
After her harsh words, Grandma Liu’s tone softened considerably. "Wanqing, with your qualifications, what kind of man would be hard to find?"
Su Wanqing was a bona fide top medical student who had studied abroad, and her parents were well-known businesspeople. With her family background...
Finding a man would be the easiest thing in the world.
"I..." A tear slid from the corner of Su Wanqing’s eye. She bit her lower lip tightly.
