First Immortal of the Sword

Chapter 2791 - Competition and Assassination

Chapter 2791 – Competition and Assassination

The ground was littered with fragments of Falling Star Stones.

When Liu Tianchen saw this, he couldn’t help but exclaim, “You sure were fortunate, Brother Li!”

Su Yi glanced at him. “Do you want to steal them?”

Liu Tianchen laughed. “I remember you agreeing to a true duel here in the Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone. It seems to me that this is as good a time as any!”

He pointed to the eight Falling Star Stones. “If I win, those are mine. How about it?”

Mo Lanhe frowned, his gaze locked onto the gray-haired, youthful-featured elder, Wei Yun.

Wei Yun wasn’t from the Southern Darkness Sword Court. Rather, he was a retainer of Liu Tianchen’s family, and he’d risen to prominence a long time ago.

He was an old monster of a Heavenly Monarch well before Mo Lanhe stepped into the Heavenly Fate Realm. Going by age, he was fit to address Founder Qi Jingzhen as his Daoist Brother. But due to the limits of his potential and foundations, his strength wasn’t overly extraordinary. By the standards of the Literati Continent, he was at best second-rate.

Even so, Mo Lanhe knew he had to be on guard!

The reason was simple. Mo Lanhe was the Mountain Lord of Snowy Pine Peak and a Heavenly Monarch of the Dao of the Sword, but he wasn’t a peak expert by the standards of the Literati Continent either. Were they to fight, the best outcome Mo Lanhe could hope for was mutual defeat with heavy injuries.

Fu Lingyun was a bit nervous, too. After all, Liu Tianchen had taken fourth place in the Nine Luminaries Dao Assembly, making him a peak expert among the Unfettered Realm cultivators of the Literati Continent.

Moreover, Li Muchen had lost to him during the Nine Luminaries Dao Assembly.

“And if you lose?” Su Yi said casually.

Liu Tianchen took out a bag of holding. “This contains two unopened Falling Star Stones. Defeat me, and they’re yours.”

Su Yi smiled faintly. “You want to bet your two stones against my eight?”

Liu Tianchen blinked. “If you win, I’ll gather the remaining six and pay you back after we leave the Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone. How about it?”

Wei Yun couldn’t help but interject before Su Yi got the chance to respond. “Young Master, this is a clash over good fortune. What need is there to go to such lengths? It seems to this old man that there’s no need to be polite. Just fight with all your might, fairness be damned!”

His voice was seething with murderous intent. One look at the Falling Star Stone fragments littering the ground, and it was obvious that Li Muchen and company had already acquired no small number of treasures!

In the face of such an enormous stroke of good fortune, why bother sparring? Better to just attack!

Mo Lanhe said coldly, “Hey, old man. Do you think I’m just here for decoration?”

Wei Yun flashed him an insincere grin. “What, does the Blueleaf Sword Sect plan on casting aside all pretenses of cordiality with us?”

Mo Lanhe said calmly, “I came here prepared to die. Do you think I’d fear such paltry threats?”

Wei Yun laughed. “My young master has already made contact with several of his dear friends. They’ll soon be here—and they’re bringing their Dao Protectors with them. When the time comes, how will you fight them? Try, and you’ll be no more than an egg flinging itself against a rock!”

His voice was dripping with disdain.

The Blueleaf Sword Sect was a middling Heavenly Monarch faction by the continent’s standards. How could it possibly contend with the continent’s top faction, the Southern Darkness Sword Court?

Especially since Mo Lanhe was just an elder; he certainly wasn’t the strongest Sword Monarch his sect had to offer. His position wasn’t even all that high.

Thus, Wei Yun completely disregarded him. More than that, he found it hard to believe that Mo Lanhe would dare to fight to the death on Li Muchen’s behalf!

Mo Lanhe’s brow furrowed, and his expression darkened.

But against his expectations, it was Liu Tianchen who objected. “Wei Yun, you are not to be impudent! This might be a struggle for good fortune, but that doesn’t mean we can act unscrupulously. Moreover, Fellow Daoist Li and I are going to spar in a true clash of the Grand Dao! Either I win openly and honestly, or I lose with dignity.”

Wei Yun was stunned, then apologetic. “Forgive me, Young Master. If you’re happy with that, this old man won’t dare to overstep.”

Liu Tianchen looked at Su Yi. “Brother Li, rest assured. Fight me, and you needn’t worry about anything unexpected happening!”

Su Yi inclined his head. “Very well.”

Boom!

Liu Tianchen’s robes billowed around him as his powers of the Grand Dao manifested a swaying golden hibiscus rooted in the darkness of the void. Sword qi rose from its center, dazzling and imposing.

His entire presence underwent an incomparably shocking transformation.

“If you please!” said Liu Tianchen, his eyes flashing like swords.

Earlier, at the Nine Luminaries Dao Assembly, he’d defeated Li Muchen, but the victory had left a sour taste in his mouth. He could tell that his opponent had held back!

Now, he wanted to win in a true battle. Only then would his heart be at ease, for this was how he sought the Dao!

Su Yi took a step forward and raised his hand. “If you please.”

But just as the spar was about to begin, something unexpected happened.

A layer of unsettling, blood-red light descended over the surrounding one thousand miles of mountains and rivers, bringing with it unbelievably terrifying pressure.

Space shattered in front of Mo Lanhe, and a glittering, golden halberd swept toward him.

Its wielder was a long-haired man in gray, his whole body billowing with monstrous murderous intent. He appeared out of nowhere, silent as a ghost, then launched his absolute killer move the moment the battle began.

Mo Lanhe’s pupils constricted, and a bone-chilling sense of impending crisis made his hair stand on end.

There was nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. All he could do was meet this blow head-on!

Were that the extent of it, Mo Lanhe wouldn’t have been so upset. Worst-case scenario, he died in battle, that’s all.

What really enraged him was that another figure was shooting toward Su Yi.

This was a man in red robes and a jade crown. He carried a blood-red saber, and he struck as quickly as lightning, attacking Su Yi from behind. A wave of saber light dyed the entire stretch of heaven and earth red.

This is clearly a pre-planned assassination attempt!

Mo Lanhe had only just thought this when his enemy’s powerful strike landed.

Even though he instinctively fought back with all his might, the glittering golden halberd almost tore him in half. Blood gushed from the seven apertures of his face, and he fell into the dirt several tens of thousands of feet away.

Boom!

The gray-robed man with the golden halberd stuck to him like a shadow and attacked once more, striking with endlessly terrifying momentum.

Mo Lanhe had yet to steady himself on his feet when this enemy attacked.

It seems this is where it ends! Mo Lanhe looks stricken. He wouldn’t have thought a Heavenly Monarch like him would prove so ineffectual.

But then, a startled cry rang out. “Help me!”

The gray-robed halberd wielder paused, then whipped his head around. Off in the distance, he saw that his companion, the man in red, was suspended in the air like a chicken. Li Muchen was holding him by the throat.

“This…” The gray-robed man almost dared not believe his eyes. The young master caught him by surprise. How could he have lost just like that?

Mo Lanhe, meanwhile, seized the opportunity to move further away. When he saw what had happened, he couldn’t help but feel stunned.

The attack had come out of nowhere at unbelievable speed. Before Liu Tianchen could act, Wei Yun stood in front of him. By the time Fu Lingyun realized what was happening, Su Yi had already suppressed the man in red!

It wasn’t just the halberd wielder and Mo Lanhe; Liu Tianchen, Wei Yun, and Fu Lingyun were stunned, too! None of them saw how Su Yi moved!

“Quick, release my young master!” The man in gray bellowed, then drew closer to Su Yi, his aura sweeping forth like a windstorm and his murderous intent rising into the heavens.

Wei Yun narrowed his eyes. What a terrifying presence!

Liu Tianchen could tell at a glance that the man in gray was from the Five Great Continents. He was the red-robed man’s Dao Protector.

The red-robed man was called Xue Sheng. He was a disciple of Sevendeaths Court, a Heavenly Sovereign faction of the Five Great Continents, as well as the monster in thirty-first place in the Unfettered Rankings.

Liu Tianchen had never even considered the possibility that Xue Sheng would try to ambush and assassinate Li Muchen.

Even more unbelievably, Xue Sheng was the one defeated, and in the blink of an eye at that!

Does that mean that if Li Muchen and I had clashed, I’d have lost instantaneously, too? The realization made Liu Tianchen feel as if he’d been struck by lightning. He was completely stunned.

Meanwhile, the man in gray was walking toward Su Yi.

Su Yi faced him calmly. It was Xue Sheng who cried out frantically, “Uncle Rong, don’t! He… He seized my Nine Luminaries Medallion!”

The man in gray stopped in his tracks, his face ashen.

Wei Yun’s eyebrows rose. Li Muchen is seriously that strong?

Mo Lanhe sighed in relief. With a hostage in hand, we have nothing to worry about!

Practically simultaneously, Liu Tianchen transmitted Xue Sheng’s identity to Su Yi and urged him not to do anything reckless.

Su Yi said nothing in response.

“Release my young master, and this ends here!” the man in gray said icily. “Or else, you might well leave here alive, but I guarantee that your sect cannot endure the brunt of Sevendeaths Court’s fury!”

Fu Lingyun and Mo Lanhe’s hearts sank. That’s a Heavenly Sovereign faction! If they seek revenge, neither the Blueleaf Sword Sect nor Light Beam Sword Pavilion will be any match for them.

Xue Sheng’s face was red from oxygen deprivation. He sputtered, “A clash over good fortune, that’s all. You have no reason to do this. Hurry up and let me go!”

The man in gray glowered, his expression terrifying. “Let him go, or I’ll kill you all!”

Wei Yun looked stricken. This is how Sevendeaths Court does things. They’re tyrannical and not at all amenable to reason!

Liu Tianchen’s heart clenched. There wasn’t a single sect in the Literati Continent that dared to provoke a faction like Sevendeaths Court.

That was why the man in gray dared to be so domineering despite the fact that Xue Sheng had been taken hostage.

But then, Su Yi laughed. “Now I believe that you came here to seize our good fortune.”

Had they seen through his identity, there was no way they’d have been stupid enough to threaten him.

But it was obvious that no one else understood the true meaning of Su Yi’s words. They assumed this meant he’d decided to compromise.

“Not bad. You’re clever!” said the man in gray, visibly relaxing. “Hurry up and let him go. I promise to let you and your companions leave this place alive.”

The depths of Xue Sheng’s gaze burned with hatred. Who cares how strong you are? You’re still afraid of Sevendeaths Court’s reprisal, aren’t you?

Xue Sheng had already made up his mind. So long as I regain my freedom, I’ll repay this humiliation one thousand times over!

“Who said I was going to let him go?” Su Yi asked calmly.

As he spoke, he tightened his grip.

Bang!

Xue Sheng’s body and soul exploded into ash, and his belongings tumbled to the ground.

They were all that remained of him.
