Chapter 2350 - The Book of Legends
Chapter 2350 – The Book of Legends
Su Yi sat cross-legged, then transmitted, “Earlier, I’m sure you knew I wouldn’t ask you for help, so why did you seem so frantic?”
His first incarnation’s heart devil remained silent. He didn’t respond.
Su Yi smiled. “Don’t be so petty. Is it really worth sulking just because I didn’t ask you for help?”
The heart devil finally broke his silence. “If you’re so smart, why haven’t you guessed already?”
Su Yi pondered briefly. “That fake Liuxiang Hen most likely had some sort of taboo treasure. It was that taboo treasure that let him sense me, enabling him to ambush me like that.”
Earlier, Su Yi had only just been wondering why the rusted sheath and Epoch Spark were reacting when “Liuxiang Hen” attacked.
This led Su Yi to conclude that the fake Liuxiang Hen had some sort of taboo treasure, and that he’d used it to locate him.
There was no denying it. His methods were wondrous indeed. He really had caught Su Yi off guard.
“And then?” the heart devil said calmly.
Su Yi suddenly realized that the heart devil was testing him. It wanted to see what he thought.
He laughed, not the least bit concerned, and continued, “The real reason you were so frantic earlier is that you saw through his taboo treasure’s tricks.”
“That’s not hard to guess,” said the heart devil.
“It really wasn’t hard to guess, but if I’m not mistaken, you thought that taboo treasure’s powers were enough to kill me. That’s why you seized the opportunity to make me beg for your help,” said Su Yi. “It’s also possible that you just wanted to seize the taboo treasure in question.”
“Hah. You think too small,” sneered the heart devil.
Su Yi said with a laugh, “But I can tell you’re unhappy that I didn’t ask for your help.”
The heart devil sighed. “No, I just didn’t anticipate that the person controlling the Book of Legends would be so weak.”
The Book of Legends? Su Yi’s eyes shone with a strange light. “So, his taboo treasure was called the Book of Legends. Does it let someone imitate another’s powers?”
“Your thinking is too shallow,” said the heart devil. “This treasure is nowhere near as simple as you think. In the River of Destiny, it’s ranked among Eternal Divine Treasures.”
Su Yi couldn’t help but be curious. “What do you mean by that?”
“Beg me, and I’ll tell you,” the heart devil said calmly. “As I’m sure you already know, I strive for a Grand Dao of balance. If you want to acquire something, you must pay the corresponding price.”
Su Yi shook his head. “We’re just chatting, yet here you are, seizing the opportunity to extort me. You’re far too petty, yet you claim to seek the secrets of balance? If you ask me, that’s what’s truly shallow here.”
The heart devil laughed coldly. “Provoking me will do you no good.”
“There’s no way I’ll beg you,” said Su Yi. With that, he was just about to reseal the sheath with the power of reincarnation when…
“Wait!” said the heart devil. “How about this? Let’s make an agreement. I’ll explain the mysteries of the Book of Legend to you, and in exchange, if you one day manage to acquire it, we’ll split it, fifty-fifty.”
Su Yi was stunned. “How can you split such a treasure without destroying it?”
“You’re only saying that because you don’t understand. Agree, and I’ll naturally answer your questions.”
Su Yi pondered briefly, then nodded. “Very well.”
The heart devil instantly seemed pleased, as if he’d gotten exactly what he wanted. “Now you’re being sensible!”
Su Yi frowned. Why do I get the sense that I haven’t ‘been sensible’ so much as ‘been fooled?’
In other words, the heart devil had said all that, not with the ultimate goal of getting Su Yi to beg for his help, but to get him to agree to split the Book of Legends!
But then, Su Yi wasn’t bothered by such petty schemes. If the heart devil was going to scheme, it was far better for him to scheme openly. Mysterious, unfathomable plots were far more dangerous.
Next, the heart devil kept up his end of the bargain and explained the Book of Legends in full detail.
……
Meanwhile, in a burbling stream in the heart of a valley, a delicate, handsome youth sat by the shore. He’d hiked up the legs of his pants, and he was soaking his feet in the cold, clear water. He looked thoroughly relaxed.
He held an ancient tome. It was only about as thick as a finger, and it was unclear what the pages were made out of. They were as black as ink, and they shone with the dark luster of an eternal night.
Suddenly, the ancient tome flipped open, landing on a certain page.
Unbelievably, the page reflected Su Yi’s earlier fierce battle with Liuxiang Hen in full detail.
As the young man soaked his feet, he watched the battle and commented, shaking his head. He was like a spectator watching a show.
“Tch, he’s just in the Fortune Realm, yet he can somehow struggle against a peak Nine-Tribulation Master God. That’s simply perverse! He’s far fiercer than those guys on the River of Destiny who fancy themselves the chosen sons of heavenly fate!
“That Dao of the Sword! Fierce!
“That’s the power of reincarnation? Fierce!
“What a terrifying Grand Dao Divine Ability. Fierce!!”
…As the young man watched, he suddenly tapped the page and said, “Su Yi, are you this inept without others to help you?”
Strangely, as Su Yi fought Liuxiang Hen, Liuxiang Hen uttered those very words!
In other words, the delicately handsome young man was borrowing Liuxiang Hen’s mouth to talk to Su Yi mid-battle.
What happened next proved that.
When the River Child arrived with his black umbrella and brutally mangled Liuxiang Hen, the handsome young man’s smile stiffened.
“Where’d that little hooligan come from!? Just listen to him! All that cursing is far too unpleasant. It’s… simply infuriating!” The handsome young man frowned, a dark look on his brow. “Ah, so he’s a spirit of the natural order. No wonder.”
In the end, as he watched Liuxiang Hen get destroyed over and over again, the delicately handsome young man’s expression darkened. He suddenly disregarded the rest, raised his hand, and tapped the page.
Kccch!
A rain of light scattered, and Liuxiang Hen fled.
Moments later, the image reflected on the page turned ethereal and indistinct before vanishing completely.
What replaced it was a lifelike portrait of none other than Liuxiang Hen.
It was just that the page it was drawn on was obviously indistinct and dimmer. It had somehow lost its luster.
The delicately handsome young man’s heart ached.
“Damn that little brat! It wasn’t easy to gather that book soul, but he almost destroyed it!” the young man said through gnashed teeth.
He slammed the ancient black book shut, then opened his mouth. The book transformed into a beam of light, then blurred into the delicately handsome young man’s body.
“But… I still benefited considerably from this battle. I’m now fairly certain I’ll succeed when it comes time to deal with Su Yi later!”
The young man lifted his legs out of the water and stood, then followed the stream further into the valley without even pausing to lower his pant legs.
“I’ll be back once I’ve found a stronger book soul, ideally one of Su Yi’s old friends. That way, I’ll really be able to catch him off guard!
“And I can’t let ‘Liuxiang Hen’ go to waste. I can use that identity to make contact with some of his friends. If I can trick them into working with me to defeat Su Yi, all the better.”
…As the young man pondered, a smile tugged at his lips, and his eyes lit up with eagerness.
“Haha, the God Domain sure is fun! Once I’ve taken Su Yi down and the Dark Days of Legend arrive, the whole place will tremble beneath my feet!”
……
White clouds hung in the air. The breeze was clear and fresh.
The vestiges of fierce combat remained in a dilapidated stretch of wilderness.
Su Yi finally understood the mysteries of the Book of Legends, and despite himself, his heart shook.
This really was a taboo treasure. Its greatest wondrous application lay in its ability to let legendary experts come back to life in the form of “book souls!”
However, becoming a book soul was no easy feat.
There were roughly three requirements.
First, you had to be dead already.
Second, you had to be an unparalleled, legendary figure. This requirement was enough to exclude the overwhelming majority of the experts who’d died over the years.
After all, who among those who’d become legends wasn’t a top expert spoken of far and wide?
Liuxiang Hen met this condition. After all, he’d died a year ago at the River Child’s hands, and in life, he was a Nine-Tribulation Master God, and he’d long since been famous throughout all four divine continents.
Third, the owner of the Book of Legend needed one of the deceased’s belongings to condense a book soul.
Once you’d successfully condensed a book soul, you could use the Book of Legends to “bring someone back”, complete with their former peak cultivation base, divine majesty, secret arts, and combat experience!
In other words, although they weren’t really living people, book souls were no different from the deceased legendary figures they were based on in any way.
Most terrifying of all, the Book of Legends wasn’t limited to just a single book soul!
According to the heart devil, the Book of Legends was from the River of Destiny, and it was thus imbued with an aura connected to destiny. That was what let it condense book souls and summon long-deceased legends!
The Book of Legends had originally had forty-nine pages, enough to condense forty-nine Book Souls.
That meant that the Book of Legends alone could have materialized forty-nine legendary, peak experts and sent them all into battle at once…
How terrifying was that?
This was why the Book of Legends was considered a taboo treasure. It truly violated a taboo and broke the bounds of common sense!
But according to the heart devil, over the course of the ages, the Book of Legends had changed hands many times over, and it had been damaged in the process.
The book now had just nine pages left at most.
The reason for this damage was rather unusual. It turned out that the pages could be removed and used separately…
When Su Yi heard that, he was at a loss for words. He finally realized why the heart devil had asked to divine the Book of Legends equally should they one day acquire it.
It was simple. You really could divide the book equally!
