Chapter 2250 - Latent Threats
Chapter 2250 – Latent Threats
“Who does that guy think he is? If he wanted to cooperate with us, why didn’t he step forward earlier?” Lin Jinghong said with disdain.
“All too many people are delighted to add flowers to brocade, but few will deliver coal in a blizzard,” Su Yi said calmly.
His words resonated with the crowd.
Before long, the old monsters still watching in secret left, one after another. There was no doubt about it. It was obvious to everyone that Su Yi had won this chess match!
“Daoist Brother Li Fuyou, it’s over. I ought to head back.” Divine Corpse Blood Robe walked over.
Su Yi inclined his head. “I won’t renege on our agreement.”
Divine Corpse Blood Robe had come to assist Su Yi on the condition that Su Yi helped him reincarnate. It was effectively a business transaction.
Divine Corpse Blood Robe burst into laughter. “I’ve never worried about you reneging on our agreement, because I know that you’re a man of your word. When you make a promise, you’re sure to carry it out!”
He was obviously delighted.
“That’s only natural. When Daoist Brother Li Fuyou was active in the God Domain, who didn’t know that he was a man of his word, and that his promise was worth more than any amount of gold?” The Heaven-Swallowing Toad Ancestor walked up and pointed at Divine Corpse Blood Robe. “You know, you really took advantage this time!”
Divine Corpse Blood Robe burst into laughter. “I know! If Daoist Brother Li Fuyou needs anything going forward, I’ll be sure to heed his call!”
Before long, the infamous, terrifying entity from the Blood Curse Ruins bade farewell and left.
“With Miss Lin here, I can leave feeling reassured.” The Heaven-Swallowing Toad Ancestor took a moment to flatter Lin Jinghong before pulling Su Yi aside and saying, “When it’s time to deal with that old bastard the Angler, make sure to let me know! The old-timer’s too slippery. It’ll be hard to kill him on my own, but with your help, it’ll be a completely different story.”
Su Yi smiled. “Of course.”
The Heaven-Swallowing Toad Ancestor and Angler were irreconcilable enemies. When Su Yi invited him to help, the toad agreed without a moment’s hesitation as soon as he heard that the Angler would be there.
This, too, was an exchange of sorts. After all, as the old saying went, “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”
Of course, this was only possible because Li Fuyou and the Heaven-Swallowing Toad Ancestor had known each other a long time ago. Were he anyone else, there’d have been no way to move an utterly fierce and terrifying old-timer like the Heaven-Swallowing Toad Ancestor.
Divine Priestess Celestial Rains was the next to bid farewell.
“My apologies. I endangered you yet again,” said Su Yi.
He’d been hesitant to invite her to join the battle. He knew how dire her situation was; only a single wisp of her soul remained. If anything unexpected happened during today’s chess match, she’d be completely doomed.
In the end, Su Yi still decided to invite her; he had to prepare thoroughly if he was to emerge victorious in today’s chess match.
Still, when he invited her, he shared his concerns openly, and told her directly that he wouldn’t fault her if she refused.
He’d never anticipated that she’d agree without even pausing to think.
“‘Endangered?’ How can you call it that?” Divine Priestess Celestial Rains glared at him. “Back then, I was on the verge of proving my Dao and breaking through when the Dipankara Buddha and his allies plotted against me and ambushed me. You intervened at a critical juncture and diverted their attention. It’s thanks to you that this remnant of my soul survived. You saved my life!”
She paused, then said gently, “I know what you’re worried about. Now that I’ve revealed myself, you think the Dipankara Buddha will do everything in his power to destroy me. Rest assured. I won’t clash with him head-on. I’ll flee and hide myself away.
“Later, when you go after the Dipankara Buddha, I’ll come out of hiding and help you kill him!”
The founder of Celestial Rains Palace had made numerous attempts to reach the River of Destiny, and her combat strength was terrifying beyond measure. At her peak, she was comparable to Di E, someone who’d taken half a step onto the River of Destiny.
Even though only a wisp of her soul remained, she hadn’t been at any disadvantage in her clash with the Dipankara Buddha!
Inviting her was different from inviting Divine Corpse Blood Robe or the Heaven-Swallowing Toad Ancestor, as Yi Daoxuan had been her benefactor.
But then… this still counted as calling on an old favor.
“Alright, I’ll skip the formalities and just say that if you ever need my help, I won’t refuse.” Su Yi clasped his fist.
Divine Priestess Celestial Rains smiled. “That isn’t important. Do you have any idea how happy I was when I heard that you’d returned through reincarnation?”
With that, she returned to the worn-out palace lantern and floated away.
Su Yi watched her leave, then sighed as he recalled numerous others.
Wan Zitian, the Purple Heavens Sword Master, had attacked Endless Transformations Divine Mountain.
“Spear Demon” Zang Wushu had attacked Blood River Sword Court.
Ancestor Blood Lake had led the charge on the Severed Heavens Demon Court.
And several other “old friends” had attacked other hostile orthodoxies during this chess match.
All of them had been prominent and influential a long, long time ago. They were like living legends. Yet all of these old-timers had heeded his call and come to his aid!
It was just as Su Yi had said before the battle began. He’d racked his brains and prepared thoroughly for today’s chess match!
He’d used up more than half of the favors Li Fuyou and Yi Daoxuan had accumulated over the course of their lives, all for the purpose of giving a tooth for a tooth, and repaying blood with blood!
His enemies had no scruples whatsoever. There were no depths to which they would not sink, so Su Yi naturally set aside his reservations, too.
Su Yi could no longer tolerate his enemies using such shameless tricks to force him out of hiding. Thus, he’d decided to make a show of strength during the battle at Skybright Mountain!
He wanted the whole God Domain to know that he wouldn’t tolerate anyone crossing his bottom line!
Now, the curtains had fallen on this chess match. Di E and his allies had suffered heavy casualties and left in abject defeat.
Su Yi dared say with certainty that when word of this battle spread, everyone would carefully weigh the consequences before trying to threaten those close to him again!
But Su Yi also knew that every old friend he’d asked to help him in this battle had revealed their continued existence. His enemies would see them as nails in their eyes or thorns in their sides and target them.
There was nothing for it. Everything had its advantages and disadvantages.
But then, Su YI wasn’t all that worried. Not one of his “old friends” was a pushover.
He’d also agreed to do everything in his power to aid these “old friends” if anything happened to them.
When I find the spare time, I’ve got to write them each a letter to express my gratitude, thought Su Yi.
He’d always conducted himself like this. When he had a grudge, he was sure to avenge it. When others did him a kindness, he was sure to repay that, too!
“Fellow Daoist Su.” The old man who refused to die walked over and clasped his fist. “My disciple and I were of little use today. We humbly request your understanding.”
Su Yi smiled. “Don’t say that, Fellow Daoist. The two of you made an enormous contribution. I’ll be sure to carve this benevolence into my heart!”
These were no mere pleasantries, either.
The old man was the first to hold Di E back, and his disciple, Si Ming, was the first to step forth and take a stand against his enemies. Both of them had gambled their lives on his victory!
Moreover, as the battle wound down, the old man who refused to die had killed two Nine-Tribulation Master Gods in a row. It was fair to say that his contributions were second only to Lin Jinghong!
More importantly, Su Yi hadn’t invited him or his apprentice! Such acts of kindness were unquestionably the most precious of all.
Of course, Su Yi understood that, just like Divine Corpse Blood Robe, both master and apprentice hoped he’d use his power of reincarnation to help them down the line.
The old man who refused to die smiled so broadly that he couldn’t close his mouth. “Ultimately, my disciple and I helped you with ulterior motives and not out of the goodness of our hearts.”
Su Yi smiled. “The way I see it, you sent me coal during a blizzard. That’s a rare and precious thing.”
After chatting a while longer, the old man who refused to die said suddenly, “The Dark Days of Legend will be upon us within thirty years at most. You’d best be careful, Fellow Daoist Su.
“Dao Lord Lu Shi did not appear on the battlefield today, but he did send one of his command medallions.
“Most of the unknown territories of the God Domain once served Dao Lord Lu Shi. That’s why all the old-timers I invited to assist us today had no choice but to leave.” The old man let out a deep sigh.
“I suspect that when the Dark Days of Legend arrive, Dao Lord Lu Shi and others who’ve long since stepped onto the River of Destiny… will descend into the God Domain once more!”
Su Yi narrowed his eyes. “I’m already aware.”
How could he not know about Dao Lord Lu Shi?
Despite the God Domain’s long history, only a tiny handful of people had ever stepped onto the River of Destiny.
Lu Shi was one of the few!
He’d proven his Dao in the earliest days of the God Domain’s history, transcending the God Domain and proceeding to the River of Destiny before Yi Daoxuan had even become a Master God.
It was no exaggeration to say that Lu Shi was a true ancient legend!
There was no need to even question it. Lu Shi and Di E were allies. In other words, Dao Lord Lu Shi was a terrifying latent threat that Su Yi would inevitably have to face one day!
The old man who refused to die bade farewell and left with Si Ming shortly after.
Before they left, the master of Clear Breeze Daoist Temple gave Su Yi a jade pendant and told him to shatter it if he ever needed help.
“I ought to get going too,” said Lin Jinghong. “A’Cai is waiting for me, and I don’t feel comfortable leaving her in the Sea of Exorcism.
The Sea of Exorcism! A forbidden zone located in the Central Divine Continent!
The entire Central Divine Continent was now a barren ruin. It was the greatest forbidden zone in the God Domain. Everyone knew about it!
When Su Yi asked Lin Jinghong to back him up, she and A’Cai were exploring the Sea of Exorcism in search of an ancient, taboo stroke of good fortune.
Anyone else who’d heard this would never have believed it. Ever since the Central Divine Continent was first laid to ruin, not one person had ever left it alive!
Yet now, Lin Jinghong had done just that!
